I had the same thing happen to me. The issue was unironically going too fast and triggering her spawn right as the warrior who normally walks past that spot was moving. He pretty much immediately did half her health and she fled the map. All I had to do was wait longer to trigger her event so she didn't spawn right next to him and it was easy to save her.

A lot of it is too thematic. Cav squads, double Gryph, triple Warrior squads. Maybe some of it's accidental but still.
I'm not in Bastorias yet but generally at minimum a squad wants: ranged attack coverage, row coverage, flight, high-ish mobility, freeze/stun/action-stealing status, initiative, good kill power. There isn't a wrong way to do this, but a strong base template is:
Gryphon, Hoarfrost Axe + Frostbrand Tome, high PP magic user that can use the Frostband + buff other units, initiative boosters (plumes)
From the list above this covers: >ranged attack coverage >row coverage >flight >high-ish mobility >freeze/status >initiative
leaving you to resolve the lack of power, which can be customized on a per unit basis to the needs of the map

It's pretty simple, really. Give the more generic tactics at the bottom and the more specialize tactics at the top.
The game reads tactics from top to bottom. You have to do something like 1-Shoot - Flying, 2- Shoot - Backrow. That way your unit will check for flying units first, if it doesn't find any it will check for backrow enemies

they're weak to ranged attacks since they can't trigger parry off it and do low damage to hoplites (which will get solved later once the shaman learns defensive curse, or aubin for his unguardable buff) but is great on everything else. For equipment one has a scarf and eyepatch while the other has the lucky coin and a lapis pendent.
Most people have Mel and Aramis prior to Leah. Unless you're specifically into Catria-esque types, you're unlikely to use her. I wouldn't say she's forgettable though, because she's present in so many Drakenhold scenes. She's just boring.
The only S tier is Gryph. S tier should be for units that fit into every unit, Shamans and Knights do powerful things but aren't quite auto deploys. I'd bump up Swordfighter to B and Soldier down to D, and I'm still not sure about Dark Knights. About to try Gloucester now.

They don't belong in every team. They have one gimmick basically, and you have to build around it somewhat. If they did good damage as well as debuff it'd be clearer-cut, but what you're doing when you deploy a shaman, is you're taking out a damaging unit for a unit that makes everyone else damage or tank a bit better. A lot of time the trade is pretty even.
Witch would be S tier even if he only had her teleport valor skill
Same with Vikings and Shieldshooters having busted valor skills, but they are also really solid classes that are A-B tier

I think I've played nearly every squad based TRPG on the market since falling in love with Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen as a kid, I love the genre and there's like 6 of them ever.
The latest difficulty released makes that strategy a lot worse btw, I recommend giving it a shot if you have't. I steamrolled warlord or whatever and the new one gave me some issues on a few levels.

Magic swords pushes her to 50 magic attack and gives them armor piercing(on a class with a 2x modifier on most enemies) + buffs her heals + gives her a 120 magic potency skill that removes 1 enemy PP

I had the same thing happen to me. The issue was unironically going too fast and triggering her spawn right as the warrior who normally walks past that spot was moving. He pretty much immediately did half her health and she fled the map. All I had to do was wait longer to trigger her event so she didn't spawn right next to him and it was easy to save her.

balance your units out wtf, I dont even know whats good but the game is easy if you have a reason for a unit being in a squad, like who in alains unit is going to kill a hoplite type enemy, why is he in the backline, in fact if a character sprite has a shield they should be in the front, where are your healers, etc.
A lot of it is too thematic. Cav squads, double Gryph, triple Warrior squads. Maybe some of it's accidental but still.
I'm not in Bastorias yet but generally at minimum a squad wants: ranged attack coverage, row coverage, flight, high-ish mobility, freeze/stun/action-stealing status, initiative, good kill power. There isn't a wrong way to do this, but a strong base template is:
Gryphon, Hoarfrost Axe + Frostbrand Tome, high PP magic user that can use the Frostband + buff other units, initiative boosters (plumes)
From the list above this covers:
>ranged attack coverage
>row coverage
>flight
>high-ish mobility
>freeze/status
>initiative
leaving you to resolve the lack of power, which can be customized on a per unit basis to the needs of the map

The game reads tactics from top to bottom. You have to do something like 1-Shoot - Flying, 2- Shoot - Backrow. That way your unit will check for flying units first, if it doesn't find any it will check for backrow enemies

They don't belong in every team. They have one gimmick basically, and you have to build around it somewhat. If they did good damage as well as debuff it'd be clearer-cut, but what you're doing when you deploy a shaman, is you're taking out a damaging unit for a unit that makes everyone else damage or tank a bit better. A lot of time the trade is pretty even.

The best physical sword I have bumps her atk to 43.
Magic swords pushes her to 50 magic attack and gives them armor piercing(on a class with a 2x modifier on most enemies) + buffs her heals + gives her a 120 magic potency skill that removes 1 enemy PP
It's not even a contest, magic swords are better on Holy Knights until maybe the very endgame.

assist damage is a potency 30 attack from that unit leader, +5 potency for everyone else in the unit who has the same leader ability
