Yes, that's the point of the game. Having a good formation is the difference between having an unstoppable rape machine or having a team that can't finish off a basic b***h enemy formation in one attack.

It saps half the current holder's HP and transfers it to an ally that just got hit by an attack. So if the holder goes into battle with 100 HP and an ally gets hit, the holder will lose 50 HP and instantly give that to whoever got hit. If an ally gets hit a second time and the holder is still at 50 HP, it'll give 25. And it'll keep doing that presumably until there's no more to give (1 HP). It'll do this after any amount of damage to an ally no matter how small if you don't change its default HP threshold.
It's not that great for tanking even if you optimize its tactics and put the holder safely in the back line. But it has some uses if you need a character to lose HP for whatever reason without directly taking hits.

SUPER SPOILER I played through Expert. While the beginning is decently challenging, later on its way too easy. I usally suck at strategy games but I barely needed to adjust anything. I had one anti flying team and one team for everything else for most of the game and later had one unit who annihilated everything.
Here is me one-shotting the final boss. No items, no stat boost items, no upgraded weapons, no sigils, no support and not overleveled.
I unlocked the super difficulty. Is it more challenging? I liked adjusting for some situations but Expert barely asked for that. My favourite fight was trying to push to the beast continent with my level 18 team. I spend hours trying to figure it out. Is the ultra difficulty more like that in general?

I like her much better than Travis. Yes Travis can serve as a dodge tank but his offensive presence is so much less. Ochlys is great because she can still deal good damage to infantry units AND since she is a flying unit she can go all over the map. She's a great all around unit. Definitely wouldn't recommend benching her.

I'm struggling to find a use case for him as well. His +20 initiative and 20% attack skills can be useful for trinity rain/dragoon dive compositions, but you're better off using more specific buffs instead.

I've been using a lvl 18 to one to clear 1/5 arena encounters (actually clear them, not most HP damage) including Midnight Cutpurses so I now know if they can do that, people are just fricking up.

not an awful list but dont sleep on fighter. i use provoke as much as any other valor skill. provoking assist squads down from towers trivializes some maps. And situationally, fighters are indispensible for a squishy squad on a map with archers

Elves are hybrid attackers, so hoplites are going to be shit. Elf archers don't have true attacks so dodge tanks still work
nah he was getting killed by the fencer's column attack not archers. He started doing okay once he stopped trying to tank that.
Cavs are actually kind of an issue though. A couple times I saw pile thrust chunk him for 80%-90% of his hp. Though virginia just hit 25 and got her party wide start of battle def buff so that probably won't be so bad anymore.

you can see the recruit list from the world map without having to teleport to each one and check but I don't think you can filter and search for specific ones

Can someone explain stat growth for me? I think I confused myself with some early discourse on how they work. When hiring a generic and deciding growths, numbers on certain stats show they go up or down depending on the Growth type you choose. The stat /loss/ here implies change relative to the base stats on-hire, but if that's the case then there's no clear indicator of what the exact growth will be every level and you just have to intimate what the growth numbers will be. Am I correct, or am I missing something?
I understand the growth numbers are fixed regardless of generic or story character and regardless of when you promote, people have run that line into the ground so it's pretty clear.

im not using josef cause i want all female units but theres no harm in doing so since xp isnt limited like some other games. on top of that theres lots of catchup mechanics to boost lowbie xp. one of the many design choices that make this game so nice

The battle system is genuinely amazing. I'm constantly blown away by the care put into it. The game is just huge. It doesn't even make sense to try as hard as they did from a financial standpoint. But they did, somehow.
Playing the arena, I see the value in the forecast. It's fine not to have it in the arena, as it forces you to engage more deeply with the game mechanics during a few tightly crafted battles, and you don't have to actually rout to win.
But I really think would be terrible not being able to quickly see "this is a kill" for all the throwaway mook tier fights in the game.

Chloe's got duel roles in poking a column of enemies and healing at the end of the turn. So she can sub for a dedicated healer who might have no offense and she's particularly effective against cavalry. But she's dedicated back row behind a hoplite or a soldier.
She takes a while to take off but look at her class skills.
Javelin lets you poke the back row, which is great if you set it to target Low HP enemie, making it so she can kill healers or mages.
The kicker begins when you get Keen Call, which guarantees critical hits. It makes it so your main DPS hits REALLY hard.
put her in a team with, say, a Witch wirh Focus Conferral and Rosalinde with the lightning Lance and tire paralizing the front row with Crit Truestrikes

I tried using her Maiden Hammer skill to cuck some of the high level arena Swordmasters, the math worked out and everything, then I realized Parry hardstopped her. She's one of those that always seems good in theory seldom in practice. I've not given up yet though.
Wait until she hits 25 and provides free 50% Guard and Physical reduction to the entire fricking party as her starting skill. With the right setup she literally cannot die, she gets AP, HP crit/damage buffs, AND a fricking heavy hitting counter (Truestrike, 150 physical scaling, gets 40 extra PD from an item) all just from guarding attacks. Add in a Pavise Archer with Pursuit+Healing Hunter, Mariam to protect her from magic and a Griffin Knight to deal with cav and you have an unkilleable murder wreckingball.
That's the beauty of having two shields, just slap another on if the map demands it

if a character has a large health pool and is at 60%ish HP but their HP is still higher than other characters who barely took damage then they'll get the health first if it goes by percentage
its useful again units with really high HP but awful defense/magic defense like Gladiators
To add to the other responses, do not rely on lowest hp conditionals after the early game, especially in the arena. Some teams deliberately lower their tanks' hit points to bait out bad tactics. Go for lowest physical defense and lowest hp.

I just see Alain healing himself two times with one strike.
It saps half the current holder's HP and transfers it to an ally that just got hit by an attack. So if the holder goes into battle with 100 HP and an ally gets hit, the holder will lose 50 HP and instantly give that to whoever got hit. If an ally gets hit a second time and the holder is still at 50 HP, it'll give 25. And it'll keep doing that presumably until there's no more to give (1 HP). It'll do this after any amount of damage to an ally no matter how small if you don't change its default HP threshold.
It's not that great for tanking even if you optimize its tactics and put the holder safely in the back line. But it has some uses if you need a character to lose HP for whatever reason without directly taking hits.
I'm interested in this game but the dating sim aspect of it is kind of unappealing to me. How bad is it compared to something like say Baldur's Gate?

I played through Expert. While the beginning is decently challenging, later on its way too easy. I usally suck at strategy games but I barely needed to adjust anything. I had one anti flying team and one team for everything else for most of the game and later had one unit who annihilated everything.
Here is me one-shotting the final boss. No items, no stat boost items, no upgraded weapons, no sigils, no support and not overleveled.
I unlocked the super difficulty. Is it more challenging? I liked adjusting for some situations but Expert barely asked for that. My favourite fight was trying to push to the beast continent with my level 18 team. I spend hours trying to figure it out. Is the ultra difficulty more like that in general?

Ochlys is great because she can still deal good damage to infantry units AND since she is a flying unit she can go all over the map. She's a great all around unit. Definitely wouldn't recommend benching her.
Travis isn't meant to be an attacker. Rouges are defensive utility units who dodgetank while stealing AP and PP.

I'm struggling to find a use case for him as well. His +20 initiative and 20% attack skills can be useful for trinity rain/dragoon dive compositions, but you're better off using more specific buffs instead.

I've been using a lvl 18 to one to clear 1/5 arena encounters (actually clear them, not most HP damage) including Midnight Cutpurses so I now know if they can do that, people are just fricking up.

nah he was getting killed by the fencer's column attack not archers. He started doing okay once he stopped trying to tank that.
Cavs are actually kind of an issue though. A couple times I saw pile thrust chunk him for 80%-90% of his hp. Though virginia just hit 25 and got her party wide start of battle def buff so that probably won't be so bad anymore.

you can see the recruit list from the world map without having to teleport to each one and check but I don't think you can filter and search for specific ones
You can hover around the main map and get details of each shop and barracks, I don't think you can get female soldiers

Can someone explain stat growth for me? I think I confused myself with some early discourse on how they work. When hiring a generic and deciding growths, numbers on certain stats show they go up or down depending on the Growth type you choose. The stat /loss/ here implies change relative to the base stats on-hire, but if that's the case then there's no clear indicator of what the exact growth will be every level and you just have to intimate what the growth numbers will be. Am I correct, or am I missing something?
I understand the growth numbers are fixed regardless of generic or story character and regardless of when you promote, people have run that line into the ground so it's pretty clear.

Playing the arena, I see the value in the forecast. It's fine not to have it in the arena, as it forces you to engage more deeply with the game mechanics during a few tightly crafted battles, and you don't have to actually rout to win.
But I really think would be terrible not being able to quickly see "this is a kill" for all the throwaway mook tier fights in the game.

Chloe's got duel roles in poking a column of enemies and healing at the end of the turn. So she can sub for a dedicated healer who might have no offense and she's particularly effective against cavalry. But she's dedicated back row behind a hoplite or a soldier.
She takes a while to take off but look at her class skills.
Javelin lets you poke the back row, which is great if you set it to target Low HP enemie, making it so she can kill healers or mages.
The kicker begins when you get Keen Call, which guarantees critical hits. It makes it so your main DPS hits REALLY hard.
put her in a team with, say, a Witch wirh Focus Conferral and Rosalinde with the lightning Lance and tire paralizing the front row with Crit Truestrikes

I tried using her Maiden Hammer skill to cuck some of the high level arena Swordmasters, the math worked out and everything, then I realized Parry hardstopped her. She's one of those that always seems good in theory seldom in practice. I've not given up yet though.

Wait until she hits 25 and provides free 50% Guard and Physical reduction to the entire fricking party as her starting skill. With the right setup she literally cannot die, she gets AP, HP crit/damage buffs, AND a fricking heavy hitting counter (Truestrike, 150 physical scaling, gets 40 extra PD from an item) all just from guarding attacks. Add in a Pavise Archer with Pursuit+Healing Hunter, Mariam to protect her from magic and a Griffin Knight to deal with cav and you have an unkilleable murder wreckingball.

if a character has a large health pool and is at 60%ish HP but their HP is still higher than other characters who barely took damage then they'll get the health first if it goes by percentage
its useful again units with really high HP but awful defense/magic defense like Gladiators

To add to the other responses, do not rely on lowest hp conditionals after the early game, especially in the arena. Some teams deliberately lower their tanks' hit points to bait out bad tactics. Go for lowest physical defense and lowest hp.
