Nah, it isn't gonna flop. Unless you consider anything under 1M a flop, which is dumb. Vanillaware titles outside of Dragons Crown and 13 Sentinels have never been huge sellers. They're still a small studio that intends to create games for a niche audience.
On top of 13 sentinels putting them in the lime light again, I think word of mouth is the biggest thing that'll push sales for this. I think the Demo did way more to push people to buy it then trailers probably wouldn have.

They do good with demos. I remember only buying 13 cents because I played the demo and loved it. This time I already knew I was going to love it though so I'm just enjoying the early gameplay.

compare Unicorn Overlords demo to one like Octopath Traveler 2's where you had a 3 hour time limit you could barely get two characters prologues done if you were going around and talking to everyone as well.

Personally I used the preset Liberation Army design when it asked me to choose/make one but let the new recruits keep their default.
The only exception was the MC; for him I used the Liberation Army design but changed the crown on the helmet and the castle wall at the bottom to the one for the default flag for his country, since he's both the leader of the rebellion and the monarch of the nation.
I played the switch demo then decided to check it out and PS5 and holy shit. Its waaaaaaay better looking on the ps5. HDR and the res bump are worth it. One of the best looking games I've ever seen. If I buy I'll be going ps5 for sure. If you have an OLED switch it probably looks great on that though. I only have an og model and I never play handheld anyways.

Anyone know what happens if you don't execute the bandit leader at the church? Does he join you? I executed him and got a cleric for my trouble.
Seems like units you let go can be recruited later, but ones that are executed you get more rewards for doing so, and you get backup units of them later. For example Kitra can fill the slot of Mordon if you decide to kill him.
I'm more wondering if you still get the cleric if you don't execute him. If not then it seems like you're incentivized to be a nice sap to everyone you meet, which is a little sad.
You still get the cleric either way, the only thing is that if you don't kill him then you have to find more shards to recruit the angel, killing him gets you to 50% of the shards needed to recruit her.

I didn't have much trouble with swordfighters, but hoplites he was ineffective against yea. I only saw many of them during the swamp stage though, and the witch just annihilated them. Also made good use of the hunter with the flame bow and lex with the poison sword, who'd both beat hoplites in initiative and then the hoplite would typically die from the poison + burn.
swordfighters parry knights which give them a free ap and they take 0 damage, they're even more annoying than hoplites since they can actually kill you if they parry

Turns out the second one isn't necessary, but you need to enable the demo time cheat and then fully close and relaunch the game for it to actually work.
Man, it would've been nice if Ryujinx's own guide for cheats even mentioned the cheat menu instead of just saying everything in the text file is automatically active because I guess they haven't updated it in years.

griffin/griffin/warrior/shaman. need the warrior to kill hoplites and shaman to debuff initiative of enemy archers and buff griffins with powerful call
alain/griffin/griffin/warrior is also very doable with a lapis pendant or azurite shield since he provides enormous role compression as both a frontline tank that can heal himself and pseudo fighter to cover the griffins from arrows
deedlit and pirotess. i would be amazed if the dark elf has some dark knight love interest and the normal elf a heroic knight love interest. its amazing how much you see lodoss influences even today once you watch it. its everywhere, especially deedlit

That stops working as soon as you get to the second tower and the enemy fort provokes her to go suicide against it. And then the bridge spams reinforcements along with the last tower spamming AoE skills at you.
What did end up working for me was sending Ochlys to the top two towers and setting Josef in a unit with a generic flier to go solo the third tower by himself.

it's not even cheese, the game straight up tells you to do it. though in later stages, the game puts up archer towers with a valor skill that fricks over flyers on the approach just as a frick you to that strat
if it's your own griffin goonsquad, you can protect them from arrows in many ways including using alain or a shaman to debuff their initiative so your griffins will obliterate the archers before they can even move

Just from what I've gathered playing the demo with the japanese voice on. The english text takes a loooot of liberties while trying to sound all regal and "flavorful". If helps with characterization (I found the japanese script to be a bit dry) but its definitely not the same.

I assume that's from the prologue where you're just meant to watch the carnage, in the actual game you start with one active, one passive skill per character aside from Josef so everything will gradually click into place
Those are the skills your character currently possesses. I don't know what half of them do either, I'd have to read the skill. Actives are triggered once per turn in initiative order, once for each AP you possess. Passives are triggered when something happens, the passive always tells you what that trigger is, again once per PP

You have a world map where you walk around, do missions, talk to people get items and do all sorts of random shit
You have a number of "units", starting at 2-3 made up of 2-6 party members in a 2x3 grid. Early game only lets you have 2 party members per unit and you are able to make more units with more party members as you gain renown and honor points
characters have skills/attacks which usually have special effects. you can program "priority lists" for each character where they will attempt to fullfil their conditions or jump to the next valid one (for example, a character that has an attack where they attack again if they kill an enemy can be programmed to ONLY attack enemies with low health of a certain type, and if that isn't possible, they'll do the next possible thing).
Battles are in 13 Sentinels-like real time (I.e. Real Time with pause) and start battles when they approach enemies.
Combat mechanics are fire emblem-like
You get characters as you progress through the story and there are choices

Pretty funny that Unicorn Overlord might unironically be the "rebirth" of tactical RPG's as they claimed in their first trailer. Seeing a lot of people online who've never played strategy games or did and disliked them saying they clicked with the demo. Even people saying it's goty contender already.

It's a remake, but Tactics Ogre Reborn got a lot of attention from a new generation and rightly so, it's fantastic. Problem is these tactics games will never be proper mainstream, it's just too niche.
What does that have to do with the fact that units literally cannot fight more than 4, 5, or 6 (dependent on movement type) fights in a row before they're almost useless until you let them rest or use a valor skill?
Am I the only one who didnt know that the battles are automatic in this game going in? I liked the demo a lot so will still be getting it plus Vanillaware is actually one of the few devs I want to support.

They seem like fairly decent all purpose damage units, debuffing enemy defense can be nice and they attack twice per turn by default
It's just that in the demo content most of the enemies are infantry anyway so Knights like Clive are able to just mop them up

She's a DPS so you can splash her in pretty much any team, I wouldn't bother putting her with Yahna though because her attacks already pierce armor unless you're using her with the meatspin hammer
everyone that doesn't have a mage. warriors have better initiative than mages so they're better on hyperoffensive units. with a feather or tailwind cape, they'll go first and smash hoplites so that the rest of your unit can deal damage without getting cucked by cover
Rolf and Auch seem to have good synergy in that Rolf can setup burn for Auch to fish for his end of battle round passive.
Just a matter of putting an actual tank in that team.
I liked the demo enough to go check out the inspiration Ogre Battle (64) and holy shit is it just SLOW

I'm having a lot of fun with them game but I have a couple questions hoping if you guys can answer.
1. Am I being timed in the main story? Just finished Travis's side quest among a few other side quests and a cutscene triggered where Renault was gloating about sending Scarlett to Galerius and I don't know if it's the game's way of saying to hurry up since the game seems to have a day/night system so I don't know if it's one of those games that works on a calendar system or not.
2. Is there a way to set the game to automatically pause once I start a quest?
3. Will the save data transfer over?
4. I heard anons talking about this earlier, but what happens once the time limit at the top runs out? I almost ran out while switching formation leaders within garrisons and then running back so thankfully the time limit is generous.

This save is with the limit uncapped, the only difference is being able to reach 2 liberation missions I otherwise wouldn't have time to do though for an extra 1-2 levels at most. Getting to level 15-ish is pretty easy if you know where you're going and skip everything skippable to save time
Unless otherwise stated, all liberation missions encountered between these areas are done as soon as they're encountered.

Probably an unpopular opinion but looking at the kingdoms and their thematics I kind of wish there was 1 more with a gothic/castlevania-ish thematic to it.

It has become massively frustrating with the support fire, infinitely spawning enemies and the time limit. Either unga bunga but get that squad crippled or try to use strategy but run a risk of timing out. Certainly love getting a game over to "time up". The time limit does not add strategic depth, it removes it.
I had assumed this was the case. There's still rapport though so uniques based on generic classes will still have a slight edge. It's nice to not feel like you're required to get them though

You're probably right, I haven't played the demo since release day. With that being the case, generics are just objectively superior since you don't have to use an item to respec them out of shitty affinities like most of the uniques have.

Probably a little mix and match. I see elves as being a magic swordsman type class. There will probably be a beastman similar to gladiator but with different passives and so forth
We've seen from prerelease info that werewolves will be specialty units that specialize in finishing off weakened enemies. Other than them we haven't seen other beasts in action.
3 cav unit is really funny since at 268 speed, they're so fast that they can dodge fliers and even infantry on the road, but probably should be tamped down to 2 cavs if the map has griffon knights and hoplites
If he ends up with decent enough magic attack you can probably make a build around that, it's just that Pursuit will quickly be completely useless to run unless you can get some kind of on hit effect on later weapons

I'm not sure I have it in me for a 3rd playthrough of the demo. I love the game and I want to play more, but also feel a bit tired of repeating the same bits and rebuying the same items I bought before, etc etc.

I was able to fix the bridge while speedrunning as much content as I could on story mode. It unlocks another level 40 encounter and an area you can't access in the demo.

in a sense he is taking exp from another hypothetical character that could be getting it instead but it's really nothing like what happens in fire emblem games, as there are a few things acting as bulwarks to prevent this from being an issue. >the rest of his squad is dragged kicking and screaming into leveling up >even if you actually wanted to, you couldn't easily feed his squad all of the experience on the stage because of the stamina issue >you can shuffle around the characters in his squad to give newbies a chance to level while still using him

The bridge does literally nothing for you, you can't pass it, it wants to start a level 40 final battle that you can't even start because the demo won't let you, and you can't walk past it.

Nah, it isn't gonna flop. Unless you consider anything under 1M a flop, which is dumb. Vanillaware titles outside of Dragons Crown and 13 Sentinels have never been huge sellers. They're still a small studio that intends to create games for a niche audience.
On top of 13 sentinels putting them in the lime light again, I think word of mouth is the biggest thing that'll push sales for this. I think the Demo did way more to push people to buy it then trailers probably wouldn have.
I'm more curious on what the critics will think about it.

compare Unicorn Overlords demo to one like Octopath Traveler 2's where you had a 3 hour time limit you could barely get two characters prologues done if you were going around and talking to everyone as well.

Personally I used the preset Liberation Army design when it asked me to choose/make one but let the new recruits keep their default.
The only exception was the MC; for him I used the Liberation Army design but changed the crown on the helmet and the castle wall at the bottom to the one for the default flag for his country, since he's both the leader of the rebellion and the monarch of the nation.

I played the switch demo then decided to check it out and PS5 and holy shit. Its waaaaaaay better looking on the ps5. HDR and the res bump are worth it. One of the best looking games I've ever seen. If I buy I'll be going ps5 for sure. If you have an OLED switch it probably looks great on that though. I only have an og model and I never play handheld anyways.

Anyone know what happens if you don't execute the bandit leader at the church? Does he join you? I executed him and got a cleric for my trouble.
Seems like units you let go can be recruited later, but ones that are executed you get more rewards for doing so, and you get backup units of them later. For example Kitra can fill the slot of Mordon if you decide to kill him.
I'm more wondering if you still get the cleric if you don't execute him. If not then it seems like you're incentivized to be a nice sap to everyone you meet, which is a little sad.
You still get the cleric either way, the only thing is that if you don't kill him then you have to find more shards to recruit the angel, killing him gets you to 50% of the shards needed to recruit her.

he gets cucked by hoplites and swordfighters but otherwise knights are really strong vs most infantry
I didn't have much trouble with swordfighters, but hoplites he was ineffective against yea. I only saw many of them during the swamp stage though, and the witch just annihilated them. Also made good use of the hunter with the flame bow and lex with the poison sword, who'd both beat hoplites in initiative and then the hoplite would typically die from the poison + burn.

Turns out the second one isn't necessary, but you need to enable the demo time cheat and then fully close and relaunch the game for it to actually work.
Man, it would've been nice if Ryujinx's own guide for cheats even mentioned the cheat menu instead of just saying everything in the text file is automatically active because I guess they haven't updated it in years.

Didn't find it too taxing on Standard, but the archer spamming their attacks and using a map attack decimated some of my squad members.

That stops working as soon as you get to the second tower and the enemy fort provokes her to go suicide against it. And then the bridge spams reinforcements along with the last tower spamming AoE skills at you.
What did end up working for me was sending Ochlys to the top two towers and setting Josef in a unit with a generic flier to go solo the third tower by himself.
Total archer death.
My Hodrick, Lex, Chloe squad were soloing those chumps until they ran out of stamina
I had an easy time in the demo on expert. Key is to be patient and fly the angel over to the towers, once they're destroyed it's a cakewalk. Also useful to make the units who have anti-range assist leader abilities leader.
Want the absolute cheese strategy for that stage? You blitz Ochlys towards the towers and ONLY the towers, she can solo them all. Makes the stage a complete cakewake when you don't have multiple assists raping you. Abuse her flight. I did this on expert and just had Josef+Clive cleaning up the Archer reinforcements, Travis+Aubin+Alain made quick work of literally everything else once the towers were down, finished with with 60% of the timer left, and this was with use Josef to kill the Neutral Thieves who show up a little bit in to rob you.
it's not even cheese, the game straight up tells you to do it. though in later stages, the game puts up archer towers with a valor skill that fricks over flyers on the approach just as a frick you to that strat
Any tower I don't need to send a flier to is Josef fodder. On another note, is the only way to break barricades with that Valor skill?
You can also run units into them multiple times, Housecarl and Gladiator leaders destroy them quicker
That stage is easy though.

I assume that's from the prologue where you're just meant to watch the carnage, in the actual game you start with one active, one passive skill per character aside from Josef so everything will gradually click into place

Those are the skills your character currently possesses. I don't know what half of them do either, I'd have to read the skill. Actives are triggered once per turn in initiative order, once for each AP you possess. Passives are triggered when something happens, the passive always tells you what that trigger is, again once per PP

What's the gameplay/content structure like in as few words as possible?
Shining Force-esque world exploration meets Ogre Battle-esque RTS/SRPG battles
You have a world map where you walk around, do missions, talk to people get items and do all sorts of random shit
You have a number of "units", starting at 2-3 made up of 2-6 party members in a 2x3 grid. Early game only lets you have 2 party members per unit and you are able to make more units with more party members as you gain renown and honor points
characters have skills/attacks which usually have special effects. you can program "priority lists" for each character where they will attempt to fullfil their conditions or jump to the next valid one (for example, a character that has an attack where they attack again if they kill an enemy can be programmed to ONLY attack enemies with low health of a certain type, and if that isn't possible, they'll do the next possible thing).
Battles are in 13 Sentinels-like real time (I.e. Real Time with pause) and start battles when they approach enemies.
Combat mechanics are fire emblem-like
You get characters as you progress through the story and there are choices
TLDR it's fire emblem with 13 Sentinels real time with pause and programmable parties

Pretty funny that Unicorn Overlord might unironically be the "rebirth" of tactical RPG's as they claimed in their first trailer. 1. Am I being timed in the main story? Just finished Travis's side quest among a few other side quests and a cutscene triggered where Renault was gloating about sending Scarlett to Galerius and I don't know if it's the game's way of saying to hurry up since the game seems to have a day/night system so I don't know if it's one of those games that works on a calendar system or not.

This save is with the limit uncapped, the only difference is being able to reach 2 liberation missions I otherwise wouldn't have time to do though for an extra 1-2 levels at most. Getting to level 15-ish is pretty easy if you know where you're going and skip everything skippable to save time

It has become massively frustrating with the support fire, infinitely spawning enemies and the time limit. Either unga bunga but get that squad crippled or try to use strategy but run a risk of timing out. Certainly love getting a game over to "time up". The time limit does not add strategic depth, it removes it.

You can play with entirely customizable mooks if you want. You can even shelf the protagonist.

Stipulation, you can't give them a fully customized name. Its picked from a decently lengthy list of names.

I had assumed this was the case. There's still rapport though so uniques based on generic classes will still have a slight edge. It's nice to not feel like you're required to get them though
But Generics have rapports too though? You can see them listed on the Character List, they just don't get the rapport conversations unique characters do.
You're probably right, I haven't played the demo since release day. With that being the case, generics are just objectively superior since you don't have to use an item to respec them out of shitty affinities like most of the uniques have.

It's all different classes.
Probably a little mix and match. I see elves as being a magic swordsman type class. There will probably be a beastman similar to gladiator but with different passives and so forth
We've seen from prerelease info that werewolves will be specialty units that specialize in finishing off weakened enemies. Other than them we haven't seen other beasts in action.

3 cav unit is really funny since at 268 speed, they're so fast that they can dodge fliers and even infantry on the road, but probably should be tamped down to 2 cavs if the map has griffon knights and hoplites
Add warriors/witches to 2 cav to frick hoplites right up
Warriors need something to boost their initiative because otherwise they move too slow to frick hoplites up

If he ends up with decent enough magic attack you can probably make a build around that, it's just that Pursuit will quickly be completely useless to run unless you can get some kind of on hit effect on later weapons

This game was magical to me. It has just the right amount of world building to leave you with wonder and the story is just the right length.
13 Sentinels kept just putting twists for the sake of it and had that classic ending of bad literature where nothing that occurred in the story ever mattered because it was all a dream.
The story was great, wish I could replay it again without knowing all the twists

I paired Travis with Alain and that squad took 0 damage 99% of the time. The only time they got hit was when there was a ranged assist.

I've been playing through the demo and reached the part where you got to fix the bridge. I need 30 corsite stones, is that even achievable in the demo or am I supposed to buy the full game like good goy?
You could probably do it if you don't do any deliveries. Nodes do respawn eventually but damn does it frickin' take awhile.

I was able to fix the bridge while speedrunning as much content as I could on story mode. It unlocks another level 40 encounter and an area you can't access in the demo.

Your entire squad gains exp so capped characters can just powerlevel your weaker members.
in a sense he is taking exp from another hypothetical character that could be getting it instead but it's really nothing like what happens in fire emblem games, as there are a few things acting as bulwarks to prevent this from being an issue.

The bridge does literally nothing for you, you can't pass it, it wants to start a level 40 final battle that you can't even start because the demo won't let you, and you can't walk past it.

I think there's extra rewards, and if memory serves you gain some valor, but at least for a base it's a new place to deploy troops
It mentions a liberation bonus but I don't know what that means. I haven't noticed any difference vs doing it and not doing it. I'd like it to be the case that you get valuable rewards for doing it, but otherwise I'm not gonna bother.
Also some towns when freed have npcs give you stuff. Dunno about garrisons though, probably just take them for the sake of using them
