Unironically one of the hardest platformers ever made

Just checking this out for the first time, I'm very well versed in platformers, used to speedrun Megaman and Crash etc. - but what the FRICK is with the difficulty? The other Rayman games aren't like this, it's like Kaizo levels of autistic memorisation required.

Thats what early ps1 platformers were all like. Had to keep you entertained for a long time. The cause of several broken TVs and controllers as well. Had a lot of heart though.

I was pretty used to this game's bullshit on my way to 100%ing it but just thinking about this one singular segment is enough to make me seethe. Actual pure fricking ASS.

It gets a little better when you quit without saving after losing too many lives/continues in a short span. The game will absolutely make you die a frickton in a single level but they're all significantly easier after finishing them once.

it's a great fricking game. top tier animation, tight controls, hard but fair. ITS THE DARK SOULS OF PLATFORMING

or is dark souls the rayman of action rpgs.

No. Rayman Redemption is trash and you should feel ashamed for shilling it. I don't care if "uhhhh they didn't beta test it!" is your excuse to feel better about playing a watered down version of the game with cut content with built-in cheats.

            Anonymous

They literally didn't test it though.

            >The game is considered extremely difficult – much more so than the later installments in the series. Many players do not complete it. This is because the game was never thoroughly play-tested owing to looming deadlines, leaving the developers with no conception of how difficult it would be for a new player. It was only when reviews started coming in that they realized they had inadvertently created an incredibly challenging game.

            Defend this.

playtesting never really happened a lot in those days. developers took players more seriously, like versions of themselves. which is why gaming was never attractive to low skill noobs.

It's only later with the invention of CoD mechanics (everyone can feel a winner!) and hiding ELO (anything post s1 in league) that casual gaming became big

that's impressive anon. it's a great game and finding all the cages is a hell of a job. especially pencil land is a true horrorshow.

I tried replaying it recently and got amazed at just how incredibly hard it is on psx. On jagaur it's easier because 1ups respawn but holy fricking shit how did I finish this within just 10 hours as a kid?

    >getting all the cages on the pc version is much harder than on ps1
I thought I was tripping when I replayed it on pc, some cages had bullshit activation triggers you can never guess how to get, on ps1 it was much easier to 100% the game.

There's one cage in Eat at Joe's which requires you to swing and glide to a ring far offscreen. In the PC version an extra ring triggers to help you get across, but on the PS1 it never appears, turning it into the hardest cage in the game as the jumping momentum is broken as frick.

I can't remember that, it's been over 25 years since I played the psx version, it's also pal version, maybe that one fixed it unless there was no difference in ntsc/pal version.
