Unpopular?

I'll start : Fallout 4 has plenty of issues but the voiced protagonist isn't one of them. I *understand* why hardcore roleplayers hate it but having your main character being a dumb silent autist when everyone talks to you is just jarring.

not him (and i love fallout 4) but the story is extremely weak. it's never actually explained why the institute is kidnapping people, just a vague statement about "improving humanity" and "you just don't understand", which is not a good enough explanation for me to explain what is essentially the main problem to be solved in the game.

Not just the kidnapping, but the fact that the Institute is solely responsible for the Commonwealth's supermutant problem as early as 2180, and continued the program long after any utility or benefit could be gleamed from it. And you're never allowed to confront Shaun with any of this

Nor can you change the Institute from the inside or gradually reform it --- the plot hard ends as soon as the Brotherhood is destroyed.

I somewhat agree. A voiced protagonist isn't bad alone and can even make a game better, I prefer Dead Space 2 Isaac Clarke over him being a mute golem. But it's more bothersome with F4 because of the clear moving away from being an RPG. It could have been tolerable if they gave you multiple voice options to take but that would have been out of the scope for the game. By adding a voice to your character you are solidifying them into being one rather than a blank slate.

I think what anon means is that despite the same backstory, the details can be modular. What did the Vault Dweller spend his time doing? What did he look like? What characteristics did he have? That's part of the Role Playing Experience and what F4 objectively lacks in areas. Even Deus Ex has more flexability in that regard.

        >The Courier
Had no backstory other than being originally tasked to deliver the chip. Lonesome Road retcons this and forces the background you helped create The Divide by giving the NCR codes to accidentally set off nukes under the region and you being totally ignorant of it after leaving when the job's done. That really pissed off people and for good reasons as no one asked for it being put onto their character and also feels just tacked on. It's the same as what they recently did in having the FO4 protag male actually being the soldier in the FO1 news footage laughing as a Canadian citizen is executed in the streets by his fellow soldiers. How can you make a compassionate character now if they retconned you into being a person who chuckles like a cartel fricker laughing at someone being killed in front of you?

I don't really have a problem with the voiced protagonist in practice. I get why conceptually it's not a good idea but frankly in actual gameplay I find it negligible. Here's the base point: YOU DON'T ROLEPLAY. I mean literally you, specifically, the person reading this. You don't invent a character, their personality, their beliefs and likes and dislikes, and their fricking voice. You do not and have never done that and anyone who says 'lol i do' is shitposting. So the fact that the buff man wasteland survivor hero you're playing as sounds like a generic buff hero literally does not change anything about the character you're pretending you're playing.

I could understand it if the game was one that really facilitated roleplaying in a major way, with moral and personal decisions, character agency, and stuff to do other than shoot raiders and zombies. But Fallout isn't that game, and you don't roleplay when you're playing Fallout because literally any character you think you're playing as, is still just a generic person shooting raiders and zombies and nothing else. You're not playing some weird other character that is in this world to do things other than that, so why pretend a generic voice somehow ruins it for you?

personally I had no problems with the Voiced Protagonist in Fallout 4, HOWEVER I do believe they Really should have included like 2 or 3 extra options in every dialogue options and been more clear about what the character was saying when you picked something.
like, its infinitely annoying as all shit when you pick an option that only says something like 'why would I?' and the PC then goes on a whole long ass line of questioning to find out more information when I thought it was going to be an interesting way of them saying "no"

You could very much Tell Bethesda wanted to use Something similar to Mass Effects Dialogue Wheel, but couldn't because EA has that Patented

      Anonymous

Personally, I think Dragon Age 2's implementation of the Dialogue Wheel is better. The game's split up into different acts, and depending on the type of dialogue choice you use for the majority of conversation options, your character will either become diplomatic, sarcastic/humorous, or aggressive/confrontational by Act 2 onwards---and each of these personality types allow for more personalized and special dialogue options in certain quests that either allow certain fights to be bypassed, certain enemy characters to be spared, or simply more nuanced/specialized conversation trees unique to your convo.

I think your character eventually adopting one primary personality depending on your RP is a more nuanced way to use the dialogue wheel than what ME 1/2/3 did with it

I have never been able to get into it. I'm not a fan of crafting, building and managing settlements, having to defend them, and the way Preston was described put me off. VATS making things slow motion instead of fully stopping time felt stressing.

3 does have better exploration than NV, but that's because NV isnt that worried about being a bethesda game, it's trying to be a CRPG, which means denser areas with more plot focus and less picking a direction and dungeon crawling.

Though NV has wider swaths of empty space, the places are just more interesting. They usually have an interesting story to tell, rewarding your curiosity. Bethesda just frontloads their stupid stuff in a ton of places leaving you more to explore that just isn't interesting beyond what you can loot

NV has way better writing and is a way better RPG but the overworld is kind of meh if you're not into the whole wester aesthetic

It sucks because all your created characters have the same voice, even saints row lets you change the voice of the characters you create
