Unpopular opinion. Halo's popularity was a fluke. It did not fall in popularity because of 343 and a few mediocre titles like core fans like to say, Call of Duty survived mediocre titles, Halo was popular because when it was released online fps was a novelty for consoles

No Halo 1 CE was a unique story of humans fighting a losing battles to a superior alien race but manages to win through sheer willpower
That was like 90% of the story and thats what made it great
LMAO
I bet they think Mass Effect is the pinnacle of sci-fi space opera.
Get molested by a culture mind kek.
>star trek star wars mass effect doom other space trash
Halo story is still unique
Humanity is much more fragile in halo
The ring being a weapon for the flood
Is there even a real villain in halo? The flood are the good guys
What killed halo is they kept adding trash retcon to it
>Humanity is much more fragile in halo
Compared to the Three Body Problem?
>The ring being a weapon
Sci-fi WMDs are nothing new.
>Retcons killed halo
No kidding, the forerunner lore is a stew of random half baked ideas shat out by Greg bear the loretubers unquestioningly eat up like dogs. Bungie's halo was more self consistent and tight knit before 343i's multimedia franchise experiment blew it all up.
>An Alien invasion plot about the power of the human will in the face of an alien threat
You just described every other sci-fi TV show released for the last five decades.
To be fair, this archetype also comprises most of the well-written (mostly) sci-fi shows like
>Babylon 5
>DS9
>BSG
He did nothing wrong
> You just described every other sci-fi TV show released for the last five decades.
NTA but
>Our Aliens have religious over tones and our game uses biblical references
>there’s also a zombie parasite that’s a living fungus that creates hive minds
>The ring you’re standing on is a super weapon made to kill all the flood’s food so they starve out (this didn’t kill infection forms because they can hibernate)
Also our game is fun if you’re not a homosexual.
Half Life 2 did it infinitely better and was also popular at the time.
Halo actually had games after Halo 2 came out. half life just had weird segmented episodes that they never came back to finish
>No Halo 1 CE was a unique story of humans fighting a losing battles to a superior alien race but manages to win through sheer willpower
Fricking lol
>fps story
oh shit Black person what are u doin
Nah halo was the best fps on consoles by far and reach kinda sucked because it tried to be call if duty. 343 makes shitty games. Halo 1-3 is a great trilogy. Even hardcore 40 year old pc nerds I knew in 2004 had an xbox for halo 2. People that say goldeneye or timesplitters were better are massively coping lmaoooooooo
is halo guy a doom guy ripoff?
In halo 4 they removed the multiplayer lobby system which has been a part of halo since halo 2. The system promotes social interaction which helps build a community. Call of duty copied this system and improved upon it. Halo also had the bungie.net forums. You are a moron.
>when it was released online fps was a novelty for consoles
when CE released that didn't even exist for consoles. CE was an amazing game that played very well with a cool story that kids loved. anyone who ever liked the movie aliens or starship troopers and liked FPS would love halo. halo 2 brought the idea of couch co-op and console online multiplayer to the mainstream. it's actually astonishing that so many companies can't seem to replicate what bungie did 20 years ago with 25x the budget today, and release a broken, buggy mess that hardly works.
It really was one of the first games to get twin stick FPS controls right. Alien Trilogy got a good head start on it, but Halo perfected it. Seriously, go back and find any console shooters that pre-date Halo, and none of them are quite as responsive. Sure, Timesplitters came out before it, but it feels more like Goldeneye than anything else. Halo simply served the cheese.
>it did not fall in popularity because more than half the games suck
delusional take
CE was a great, fun and creative shooter - 2 was great but starting to get melodramatic - Halo 3 was a soap opera but still sort of fun, but from this point on the franchise was already dead in the water with the direction they were taking it.
Halo was always bad. It was just full of children. Halo was millions of babies first FPS.
Far from true. I literally played halo 2 with guys in their early 20s to 40s. It almost ended a few marriages even and that's in my circle alone. If kids only played that then what the frick were le adults playing in your fantasy?
>try to give show a go, frick it
>mfw Chief doesn't blow the insurrectionist's brains out just because she's a spunky zipperhead teenager
>mfw a fricking human woman working with covenant high command.
>John taking his helmet off all the time
The only good thing I liked so far is
>Dr Halsey is straight up Mengele who created the Spartans by kidnapping kids and surgerically breaking them, and she created cortana by cloning herself and then melting the clone's fricking brain to create true AI before dumping the body in a vat of acid.
>mfw a fricking human woman working with covenant high command
why
I don't know, they venerate her as well because she can make forerunner gear go brr
I understand it fine, but in regards to the insurrectionist shit, the Spartans were created to put them down with no qualms or remorse.
It's only luck that when the covenant invaded, the Spartans were up and ready to fight.
I don't think you understood Halo at all.
>mfw a fricking human woman working with covenant high command
>entire human-covenant war started because the prophets found out that humans were forerunners and had a sperg out
Kek
This is moronic cope. Every Halo game had insane online player counts untill they switched up the gameplay with 4. Halo would still be alive and kicking if 343 didn't try to make it a COD clone.
monkeys like playing with shit. doesn't mean playing with shit is a good game.
>This is moronic cope. Every Halo game had insane online
this quality of shit has gone down to the point that even monkeys won't play with it
Its not about Halo itself its just better competition apeared. CoD is just better in everything.
>moving the goalposts
>doesn't understand what "moving goalposts" means
Less "unpopular" opinion and more of an "ignorant" opinion. Halo was successful because it was good. Halo 2 was successful because it had fun, responsive, online multiplayer in an era when that was a rarity for consoles. The only place it was ever hated was this shit hole because Ganker has always been full of dipshit contrarians, and that's true across the entire website.
I think Halo 4 would have become like Destiny if Bungie stayed on. For all we know the Vex or Cabal came from drafted ideas for the new halo 4 enemy.
Agreed
Halo kind of fricking sucks
Halo was good, probably the best console-FPS series (not too high of a bar, but a bar nonetheless), just halo fans have standards.
nah, halo was magical
ur dumb and probably a zoomer
>Halo was popular because when it was released online fps was a novelty for consoles
Yeah. Halo was first good mp shooter on consoles but then CoD replaced it.
You can't compare Halo to CoD. CoD is a recruiting and propaganda tool that's too big to fail with an unmatchable output of titles as a result. CoD consumers buy the latest games in the franchise regardless of quality and the more discerning among them only have to wait a year or so for the obsolescence of a bad title. Halo didn't have a few mediocre titles. Halo had 3 mediocre mainline titles, 2 mediocre mobile games, and 2 mediocre RTS games. 4 of these titles don't appeal to the core player base. All of these titles were created without Bungies involvement. Halo is saturated in mediocrity. The amount of mid Halo games eclipses the amount of "good" Halo games to the point that even games in the series that were made by Bungie that were controversial at the time are considered great in comparison. Halo's downfall can be absolutely be attributed to mismanagement, lack of talent and passion, and self sabotage. The downfall of local coop, and party games in general, is also a factor. The series only exists as resume fodder for degree mill employees and because it's Microsoft's only recognizable exclusive franchise.
>blood gulch
>driving the warthog as your bro gums down enemies like ants
Big team battle ftw
>gaylo
babby's first shooter
It came out over 20 years ago anon, it's time to move on
Bungie forerunners
>Humans can activate forerunner stuff while no one else can
>Thus is because humans are forerunner
343i forerunners
>Librarian did a magic gene that somehow directed all of humanity to the spartan program to make master chief through muh neural physics or whatever
>There was the forerunners but also super forerunners called the precursors whose remains became the flood
>Also there were both ancient humans and forerunners and they didn't like each other but the librarian handed humans the keys to their nukes for no reason
>That is why humans can use the forerunner tech but no one else
Yes anon, it's all very convoluted if you mention a bunch of extra unrelated setting details you heard third-hand from a youtuber or something
Halo: Custom Edition on the PC was the best way to play Halo, and the only problem with it was that server sizes were too small for maps like Hugeass and Coldsnap
These dancing on the grave of xbox threads really show you how moronic your average guy is here.
You're telling me that brand loyalty console warriors are moronic?!
HUH?!?!?
But how could this possibly be?!
it absolutely did fall in popularity due to mediocre titles, its not comparable to CoD because if you are a CoD player and get a shitty CoD game you can just wait until next year and get a new one, Halo gameplay has a specific formula that is very easily fumbled in the wrong hands, and with years between title releases having a bad game that drives people away is far much more damaging to the fanbase as a whole
when it takes over half a decade to get a new halo game and you've already shat out two stinkers eventually people will stop caring, which is way worse than getting a single year worth of negativity and bad feedback you can use and course correct from when a bad CoD game is released
>Unpopular opinion: blatant moronation
Cool thanks for letting us know
regardless im honestly sad about the absolute state of Infinite, every game i play in Quick play or BTB isn't fun, its just people legit killing me, cant even have a fair match
Halo has always been overrated pleb shit for casuals and normies. From the start. It did fall off, because the fad did end, and the kids grew up. It’s never ever been good. The only people that liked that shit were white suburban kids named Kyle, except eventually they got jobs and have kids now, so there isn’t any desire for Halo anymore, because outside of the literal fad it was, it was generic sci-fi slop. Them making the writing worse and worse with each title didn’t help either.
Call of Duty became more popular because it allowed those same normies named Kyle to stop pretending they like gay sci-fi virginal shit, and play a more “realistic” shooter.
If you disagree, you were probably a fricking casual white boy 20 years ago and just got battle hardened and are no longer a casual normie but it’s been so long you can no longer recognize yourself and who you once were.
>quit video games because stacys loose puss is better
Fricking kek
Halo 1 didn't have online multiplayer. It wasn't introduced until 2.
Don’t expect Zoomers and Alphatards to know this, because it would require reading the entire Wikipedia article instead of skimming before shitposting.
Im pissed about Infinite, neither 4v4 or BTB are all shit, Matchmaking has killed Multiplayer FPS, you just get matched with silent buttholes and every match is a stomp, its fricking shit, companies who make this shit must pay reparations to us
It had local and lan multiplayer, there was also XBConnect
>Halo 1 didn't have online multiplayer. It wasn't introduced until 2.
Halo PC and Custom Edition were the first Halo games with a server browser and online multiplayer. Still running to this day.
Which came out 2 years after the Xbox release.
People had unlimited friends to bring over for 4 play. It was very multiplayer relevant.
A console fps without online multiplayer became popular because online multiplayer was a novelty for consoles and two years after release the pc version had online multiplayer?
It wasn't popular because online play was a new console feature. People had PCs playing Unreal online and they just didn't attract audience interest.
GameSpy always wins baby
>GameSpy always wins baby
Halo PC/CE use Bungie's custom servers now.
>Bungie is pleased to present a new update to Halo PC (and Custom Edition). The patches and dedicated servers are linked below. In a couple days once more servers have come online, the auto-update notice will be displayed in game.
>As you might have heard, the Gamespy service that has provided our server list these 11 years is shutting down at the end of the month, and prior versions of the game will no longer be able to browse for internet multiplayer games. Community member btcc22 has valiantly written a new server-browser application for Bungie to host and support in-game via this patch.
>This update also contains a number of other small bugfixes, mostly relating to security or compatibility with newer hardware. Big thanks to community members Technut and kornman00, and btcc22 again, for helping to catalog and investigate these problems, making the job of fixing them much easier, and to the community who has helped test the patches.
>Bungie believes in creating lasting social experiences, and while we’re all enormously excited for the upcoming release of Destiny and hope you’ll join us for that ride, we’re also gratified by the ongoing enthusiasm for the original Halo, and glad to be able to help keep a good thing going.
>Roger Wolfson
>Online Services Engineering Lead
Patch notes:
Bumped version to 1.0.10.0621
Moved Gamespy services to use new non-Gamespy server
Fixed a family of index-out-of-bounds bugs which had been exploited to crash clients
Made banlist parsing not case-sensitive
Removed halt on cache file verify error
Removed some verbose debug logging of gamespy connections
You obviously have no idea what the gameplay reception of the first 3 games was like. Frick off zoomie game collector.
It was the Fortnite for millennials, aka only absolute mouthbreathing FIFAMADDEN white kids and their friends that wanted to be cool played. Stop pretending like Quake and Unreal Xers weren’t laughing and shitting themselves to death at how casual and moronic you fake gamers were at the time. Half-Lifegays absolutely mogged you in terms of narrative and called you a knockoff StarCraft slapped onto a trashy dimly lit shooter whose claim to fame in 2 was OMG DUWAL WIELD.
>white kids
Oh shit this dudes a Snoyboi
Thats why he hates halo lmao
I had an Xbox because I asked my dad for a GameCube because I thought Pikmin was cute, but he thought that was gay sissyboy shit so he bought me an Xbox instead. It’s the same as when I wanted an SNES, so he got me a Sega Genesis instead because he said it looked more badass.
Every illegal immigrant male that crosses the border has a PS2 slim in their backpack with a bunch of shitty shovelware disks.
Browns ran the PS2 deep into PS4 era. They are the indomitable human spirit, whether you hate them or not. I could never see a suburban white boy crawling through razor wire with a ps double in his arms like a baby. PES, to them, is more valuable than life itself- and no one here has ever loved a video game that much.
Orange Boxers were a bunch of tourneygays.
Halo 1 and 2 were not flukes. They changed the landscape of console online gaming forever.
The fact is, a sci fi shooter cannot have the same longevity that a modern warfare shooter can like CoD. Especially when the game gets sold to devs who have no idea what theyre doing and dont put every little aspect of their games quality under a microscope like bungie did with the first 2 games.
You don't know anything about video games if you actually think that. It may be hard for you to believe, but 343's games are just that mind bogglingly stupid.
why does halo make neckbeards seethe so hard? i get it for the number company era but you hate the bungie games too? zero taste.
No not really
That's like saying LoTR was only popular because it was the only fantasy story like it at the time
Halo has unique gameplay, is well designed, and has a strong story/lore
CoD is more popular simply because it appeals more to normies/dudebros the same kind of people who will buy annual sports game releases
If anything CoD is the one that has remained successful because of its multiplayer which is more casual in a lot of ways compared to Halo's
Way more people care about Halo's campaigns/lore than they do about CoD's
Halo's core audience was always sci-fi nerds it just had short lived popularity with normies initially
This is why 343 gets shunned so much because the fanbase is fundamentally different and care more about the games
CoD players just care that the multiplayer let's them get easy kills, isn't buggy/broken, doesn't have boring maps, good cosmetics etc... and they'll just keep playing the new one every year or two
I dunno. I loved Halo and literally only played the campaigns. Haven't played an online game in my life.
Except Halo:CE launched and was mega popular before Xbox Live. People literally lugged xboxes and tvs to other people's houses to do lan parties.
Max Hoberman aka Yeroen was the soul of Halo's multiplayer
Did you know that the original plan for the Halo 2/3 multiplayer wasn't even what we ended up with, they wanted to do a Halo 5 Warzone like mode? Max Hoberman had to argue to get the classic arena-style mode in. Bungie didn't really take it seriously though, they all nicknamed Max's version of multiplayer "party game".
Few realize that Halo multiplayer has its roots in Marathon. It's also what first put Bungie on the radar.
>"Gephyrophobia, fear of bridges. Yeah, another map, if I recall, with super verticality. A lot of people fall into this trap, which is people think bigger is better. I mean, hell, it happened even on the warfare stuff we were talking about for Halo 2 in some ways. Its just not always the case. In a lot of those maps they had this mandate, and I don’t remember where it came from, but we had to do bigger because bigger is better." -Max Hoberman
Max and his team kept working on Halo 2's multiplayer while everything else fell apart. The people working on Warzone ended up getting nowhere so Bungie decided by dump it and make Max's multiplayer mode the Halo 2/3 multiplayer.
After Halo 3, Max Hoberman and Jaime Griesemer left Bungie and Sage Merrill became Gameplay Design Lead for Reach/Destiny (lol remember when everyone blamed him back then)
it was always baby's first fps
slow movement, floaty jumping, slow aiming, high time to kill
everything about it was designed to teach infants basic hand eye coordination
Halo 1 didn't have online but it did have LAN. It was also a launch title so that helped a lot.
Halo Xbox had split-screen and LAN
Halo PC had dedicated servers, server browsers, LAN but no split-screen
Halo PC released 2 years later. It wouldn't have been anything special if it were PC only.
I don't know man... maybe a 343i by not launching a decent Halo GAME since they took control of the franchise more than 12 years ago contributed to its downfall...
Nah, it must be the fans' fault.
No shit moron.
It was the first fps on a new console.
