Played it yesterday and had fun but the biggest issue is how sexless the art direction and setting are. Its technically very well made but there's no real soul to it. None of the locations feel like real places, your characters are just grey blobs with no personality to speak of, and the hows and whys game feels vapid. Who are we? Why are we fighting? Why should I care? I understand its supposed to be a gameshow, but where is it taking place? Is it a Running Man scenario where we are death row prisoners made to entertain the masses? Is it just shits and giggles in some VR world and nothing has any real consequence?
Mechanically its hectic and allows for a lot of fun synergies + destructible environments make for great makeshift strategies on the fly, but its all very soulless - Everything feels like a vehicle for mechanics and MTX and with everything else being a variation of "Dude just turn off your brain bro lmao"

Setting and context aren't the end-all be all, but they are hugely important to a games identity - This isn't Tetris where there literally are no humans and just a bunch of abstract blocks. Its a place with relatively realistic looking humans and commentators who remark on their actions - The problem is that none of the humans feel real - They feel faceless people fighting for no real reason and the commentators aren't actually saying anything.

Even Doom has a sense of place and identity to its setting. You are the Doom marine who wants to kill the demons who have overrun the Mars base. Counterstrike has some sense of conflict with its Terrorists versus Counterterrorists theme. XCOMs randomly generated playable characters are essentially an excel spreadsheet but they have a sense of humanity to them due to the setting and their assigned origin.
Mechanics are and should always be king - But what gives a game soul comes down to other things. Its the reason why games aren't just text adventures or characters are just colored squares.
I think thats why the Finals art direction and setting bother me - Its completely toothless and sterile, obviously made to have any edges sanded off so as to not offend anyone. It the inevitable end result of complete homogenization where nothing has any real personality.

Basically Monaco but with a monorail station and lines running through and around the map. The tracks can be switched and are destructable in some areas. Every few minutes a speeding train will come through that can do a lot of damage to whatever it hits

Only problem is I can see people at the start of a match going and destroying the bottom floor, but if it's large enough it should be enough of a chore that them doing that costs them the game.

If that was the case the ranks would be the opposite because if one region is stronger in skill then they also play against stronger players in general and lower the average skill rating number. It's a virtual game show where people shoot the shit to get money, that's all there is to it. Not every game needs some gay deep lore and TF2 was better without it before they started doing the comics. I feel the players themselves could use more lines and personalities but they seem to be gearing up to that with the unlockable faces and sets you get in the battlepass, more personas seems like a natural evolution for the future.
It doesn't need "lore". It needs a setting. Even Quake and Doom had setting going for them. And TF2 is very much carried by it's setting and characters. If it didn't have 9 mercs with unique personalities it would been forgotten in time. The game is fun. I like that it feels new in a lot of ways and is more loadout orientated than class based. Also it’s not a BR which I appreciate since I hate looting.

Look, this game is fricking trash. But when crying about Battlepasses, can you at least be specific in what your problem is with them? I've yet to hear an argument against them.
They turn the game into a second job and heavily distort gameplay and player psychology by making them chase daily quests instead of playing to win the game, if you see some deathmatcher in your team then it's someone trying to get damage dailies.
Then don't buy it? It's as simple as that. Meanwhile, I get all the gameplay for free.

I have no clue what I need to do in the game because even when I found their safe-thingy I couldn't get money out of it somehow. Then people showed up, blew up the stairs, and I died. Went back around the markers a few times for the same result.
Couldn't find an easy way to change the gender of the character to not be a woman since body type was not changing face etc. so I just made the most butch-looking lady ever.
Movement was absolute dogshit compared to any FPS in the last 2 decades, even indie ones (like GTTOD)

I really want to like this game, but unfortunately I don't have friends to play with. You pretty much need a tight team to excel in any way in these game modes. If they ever come out with a game mode that is more solo friendly, I'll be all in. Playing with randoms is just punishing
Having finally played a round of L-ight, I kinda get the appeal, breaching charges and flashbangs are amazing, and the mac10 shits out damage compared to the AKM or Lewis it feels like
Heavy has a much bigger C4 and a rocket launcher so it's automatically better.
