      Anonymous

Epic gets a cut after a game reaches a certain amount of sales, until that amount of reached devs don't have to pay royalties to Epic for using the game engine, obviously using Unreal to make a game and then giving it away for free instead of selling it means Epic doesn't get to see a dime from it

It's not like making games with the engine costs them money either. The engine already exists

          Anonymous

they have to pay to make said engine. then keep paying to update and innovate on top of it. not like the engine just magically poofed into their lap

You will always be an ESL, regardless of your level of literacy regarding English if you didnt RNG into being born in an English speaking nation. And let's face it, given the state of most english speaking countries you rolled lucky not being born there.

I have English friends that tell me people who are "ESL" often have a better understanding of the language and bigger vocabulary. This stems from "ESLs" having to actually learn and study it. If anything the true morons are Americans who are monolingual.
They're not the centre of the world as they claim, we're not "forced" to speak English. We're doing it because if we don't you won't bother/can't learn other languages you wouldn't be able to communicate with everyone else.

It’s an insult only North Americans throw at you, because they project their insecurity of being about the only people in the world who don’t know a second language at all at you. It’s honestly pure cope. Every thinking person would commend someone else for speaking a second, third, etc. language. But the NA tards fear this concept, because they realise that learning another language is difficult, and they can’t do it.

is going to go into subscribtions
Nah cuz it is open source.

it already requires subscription to develop for consoles
and they're gonna keep locking features behind the paywall, call them "experimental and not ready for public release"

        Anonymous

Godot doesn't officially support consoles. And that's because SONY/MSFT/NTDOY think their SDKs are some fricking NASA tech that can't be seen by the public's eye.
So Godot can't have support, because it's open-source. Instead, you have to pay a 3rd party company that has made israelite sanctioned tools to port it over.

        Anonymous

Call them "shit we have to pay to a 3rd party for". Like console devkits

        Anonymous

That's a separate company made by some godot devs that exists because you can't develop for console with an entirely open source engine, since console SDKs are proprietary, and you have to pay for them. Locking features of an open source project behind paywalls is pointless because people will just copy your source code and make a free version. The music player I use on my phone, metro, is literally that.

        Anonymous

You need to sign an NDA to get access to the SDKs needed to develop for those consoles, so that's hardly on Godot.

OP is a misleading homosexual. The change Tim talks about is for non-gaming application, specifically ArchViz and Film (Primarily film). They gained a lot of ground in the VFX industry in the past 5 years but made extremely little gains on the profits therein, the license model used for games didn't work for VFX (Also, until 2020, non-gaming use of UE was entirely royalty free, so they made literally $0 even as it was used on show like The Mandalorian).

The change is to have non-gaming uses of Unreal change to a per-seat license model. Hoping to cash in on high seat count VFX houses

Thats exactly the reason why UE VFX got popular in first place
As always, first offer free service to get clientbase, then start milking them off as long as it's more profitable to them to keep using current tech and not switch it off

The funny thing is that UE for virtual production is actual shit, crashes all the time for LED work, and needs a lot of add-ons built in-house by VFX houses like ILM to work for production, that's what filming for Mando S1 was truly like

Only because they have fortnite. Without it they would have gone bankrupt, I think they said so themselves in the leaked apple papers. The 12% cut is not sustainable, and they know it, and thats why they push it.

Might be planning on selling or floating or it's because they got too complacent having Fortnite money and fricked things up by going after Apple + FTC.

My headcanon is that they are planning on selling to Sony. Sony wants more TV/Film, mobile games and have also failed to create more GaaS shit. Epic have all of that in one easy package and MS have put the pressure on hard with ActiBlizz. It's Tim Sweeney though so it's impossible to predict.

They kept working on their existing projects because unity backpeddled and said they weren't going to apply their moronic install fee on games made with older version of unity, so existing games and ones currently already in development are unaffected. It's the ideal scenario really, no games get cancelled because of it but unity still kills itself because no one is going to want to use it for new projects afterwards.
