you have to read the item descriptions to understand who Serosh is and why he was important to Godfrey, and why him basically taking off his bloodlust inhibitor was such a big deal. I agree though, it gave me huge "forgive me... Zanzibart" vibes my first playthrough

ER is a bit conflicted because it wants the story to be hidden in items like DS but also wants to do big cinematic boss moments and it's really awkward. This also ties into the whole "why can't I just talk with Malenia" issue.

        Anonymous

That wouldn't make sense, the One Great was a combination of EVERYTHING, including the other Outer Gods.
There wouldn't be any Erdtrees or Elden Lords if there is a One Great.
He became everything, one part of him decided to make the trees and then Placi became a lord, and Frenzy wants to go back and re-do things.

Every one, born of the mistake. And so, what was borrowed must be returned. Melt it all away, with the yellow chaos flame. Until all is One again."
All is ONE again. Everything was the One Great before the One Great split into everything. That's why you melt everything down as the Frenzied Lord, fricking moron.

              >All that there is came from the One Great
The One great is the source of the Crucible and thus shaped the planet. Then it split and The greater will created the Erdtree and the Golden order. but the other Outer Gods don't factor in, they've been worshiped by entities living below the One Great / GW (see the Giants and the fell god) but they aren't literally parts of it.

The Greater Will sent a star that became Elden Ring. Elden Ring was already a thing during the age of Placidusax. However, everything else about dragons - from the red color of their spells to more natural shape of the Elden Ring screms about Crucible. Maybe One Great and the Greater Will are literally the parts of one being, but GW is now a dominant personality if you can call it one

I know this isn't a lore thread and we're several months from release date but holy shit you morons do the bare minimum research before you post about lore
placidusax is explicitly called elden lord, and served under the unnamed dragon god who was host of the Ring in the time of the Crucible, pre-Erdtree. The dragons were the original hosts of the Ring, how that all fell apart is unclear.

So let me get this straight. The Erdtree isn't a god or anything, it's like the World's soul or something right? It's used by the Greater Will but is actually it's own entity?

      Anonymous

the erdtree is a parasite sent by the Greater Will which latched onto the Great Tree and repurposed it, basically using the Elden Ring to establish "laws" through it's great runes, like Order, Causality, Death, etc.

Not him. Didn't watch Vatii stuff so I don't know what it's about, but I'd say the tree is a parasite, but it doesn't leech off the planet or anything.
Greater Will throws tree cones at a bunch of planets, they latches onto the planets and the Great Will creates a Mutualistic relationship.
He gives you some level of safety from other Outer Gods and their frickery + you get infinite life and you serve his tree.
The only bad outcome from that is that the Omen are incompatible with the tree so they get fricked.

The Japanese translation implies that the Elden Ring/Beast is a parasitic entity with the word in in regard to Marika being its "Host".
The tree is implied to be a new entity that sprouted because of the Greater Will's influence or pre-dates it, there's no proper references for it.

Game doesn't specify, we can only assume that they're related somehow. They seem to be the descendants of those that touched the Crucible. The growths on Omen are implied to also stem from the Crucible.

I saw Hoarah Loux at a site of grace in Leyndell yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for remembrances or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and whirling his axe front of my face. I walked away and continued with my leveling, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my runes I saw him trying to warp away to with like fifteen levels all in Strength without paying.

The maiden at the grace was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those levels.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around.

When she took one of the levels and started marking it multiple times for Strength, he stopped her and told her to allot them each individually “to prevent any golden infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she checked each level and put them in the stats and started to say the runes count, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

In-universe explanation: they had long since dispatched their fingers and wolves when they abandoned fundamentalism to try to do their haligtree stuff

real explanation: the entire lore around miquella and malenia was changed last minute and the devs kind of forgot to reconcile a bunch of glaring plot issues.

          Anonymous

oh yeah that makes a lot of sense. assuming the haligtree stuff was pre-shattering they would have diverged from the fingers quite a bit earlier than ranni did so its plausible they already offed their shadows.

The actual ring being shattered could've happened 1000 years ago. The war after that and the aftermath could've also been for hundreds of years with it "ending" and the survivors just defending what they own, fighting over scraps and so on. I don't imagine Caelid immediately being covered in rot it slowly encroached and creatures and people ate the corpses and mutated over time.

Thats just Bethesda levels of laziness the type of stuff you’d see in their games where an NPC sleeps in a house with holes in their roof and grenades in their toilet while an intact skeleton makes gangsigns in the bathtub

That dragon could have been killed between the start of the Shattering and the aerival of the PC Tarnished. There are loonies trying to get their hearts for power boosts.

I looked it up, apparently Gransax (the dragon in Leyndell) was killed BEFORE the war against the dragons, and his death kicked off the war in the first place, so his body has been there for even longer

It's a case where the art team and the level design team made a cool set piece and the story team poorly explained it.

That dragon could have been killed between the start of the Shattering and the aerival of the PC Tarnished. There are loonies trying to get their hearts for power boosts.

That dragon is Gransax and the description of the weapon Bolt of Gransax says
            >A great ancient dragon, Gransax once rained calamity upon the Royal Capital - the only time in historical record that Leyndell's walls have fallen. This marked the dawn of the war against dragons

Well before, there was an entire golden age created through Marika after she conquered the entire land in between. This involved her conquests and also technical Radogan's conquest since the Carian people were basically fedora tippers until Rado and Rennela created the Golden Order ideology (Greater Will's Dogma mixed with scientific observation by Carian sorcerers).

      time is convoluted

It’s really not that complicated. Godfrey is the first lord of the age of the Erdtree. Placidusax is the last lord of the previous age, which Marika rolled over to establish the golden order.

    >reach Elden Beast
    >still have no clue what the frick is going on
    >despite doing a shit load of exploring missed all possible NPC side quests and softbroken Ranni's because I don't use guides
Honestly I feel like I've missed half the game despite playing 75 hrs, I kinda lost the will to continue after the 10th ball bearing reminding me of another missed questline.

I guess the point was to look up a guide uh.

The game was unironically made with Ranni's quest in mind but I guess they wanted to justify the other endings. Probably should have forced you to do the quest and then included a branching point where you can choose to help her further.
They kind of did that, but not really.

The issue is that you don't encounter other characters organically like in DS, for example no one missed Solaire or Siegward or Anri.
In Elden Ring you have to go and look for other characters or else you'll miss 60% of the cast and potential content.

Cool of them to do that, too bad I was already past that point when they patched it.

The issue was making the world too big for their usual methodologically of quest design. It worked when it was tight, interconnected areas but now everything is 100x more spacious and NPC's will move to incredibly nonsensical areas. Why does Patches go to Shaded Castle after you uproot everyone from Volcano Manor? If I had cleared out that place before defeating Rykard what reason would I have to go back to check if an NPC was there? I discovered Blaidd being in the Evergaol on accident by just randomly deciding to walk around Limgrave otherwise I would've likely missed him. If I roamed around Liurnia before Weeping Peninsula I would hardly encounter Hyetta and her main locations don't make any sense to begin with.

at least patches and blaidd are completely inconsequential at that point in their quests

The Nox created, or found, the Silver tear. Which is capable of mimicing anything.
It's implied that some culture on the surface, probably Carians, attempted to replicate the silver tear but failed, creating the Albanaurics.

I think, or Albanaurics are offshots of silver tear. The problem is the Silver Tear can become true beings as shown by the cut Asumi quest.

This makes sense, explains why they use different type of abilities according to the place they roam

Guess they were just expandable soldiers and Rykard and Ranni (the invisible black knife is in a cave full of them hanged) just wanted a big army

Godfrey's dialogue has been cut up extensively. He used to be an NPC that sent the player into the Lands Between to follow the guidance of grace.

What’s up with punished Melina’s eye? I saw a video where NPC were unmarked and Vyke had one too, so it’s a three fingers thing

How? He even got the other eye completely blind just like Melina and is burnt just like her
Consider the NPCs have models of a lesser quality compared to cutscenes and bosses

The eyes look the same to me, one is just shaded, and Melina is burnt because you fricking burned her to light the Erdtree.

Accepting the three fingers makes Melina leave and you get to Farum by somehow burning yourself

              Anonymous

Oh yeah you're right about that, but I assume she just burned trying to get into the Erdtree or something then. I just don't see the connection to the 3 fingers with her tbh. She doesn't have the burn marks you get at the very least.

            >Melina is burnt because you fricking burned her to light the Erdtree.
in the frenzied flame path you don't burn Melina, you burn yourself. I would know, accidentally stumbled into that end during my first playthrough

Either an outer god or the worlds original "death" who got supper pissed off at the gods for ruining the natural order.

        Anonymous

she was an empyrean though, not an outer god
one video I watched suggested that it was Marika, which I still feel pretty unsure of but the point about how Godwyn is called the "prince" of death was interesting among some other things. I don't get the relation between Melina and Ranni either, there's obviously something there but what

Well she at the very least was serving some aspect of death, The Twinbird maybe?

Probably the "Elden Lord equivalent" of the "God of Death" if there's one. I think so since the Rune fo Death doesn't seem to come from the GW or the other Outer Gods we find in the game

The DLC will answer zero question or continue any plot line brought up in the base game.
It will be about of Marika's one night stands between Godfrey and Radagon and her new bastard demigod children.
