Making something in assembly has the exact opposite effect of making something run on most machines - it targets only one specific CPU architecture. That's why higher level languages were invented.

          Anonymous

The image specifies rollercoaster tycoon, which was written almost entirely in assembly and then only a small part at the end in C to interface with windows. The result being that the game was incredibly efficiently coded and in terms of performance would run on almost anything at the time, but the final wrapping in C meant it wouldn't be specific to one architecture like pure assembly would.
To be fair to modern devs I don't think anyone's expecting Chris Sawyer level autism, but that doesn't excuse how genuinely shit they have gotten.

            Anonymous

assembly coding doesn't necessarily mean efficiency though

RCT was coded in assembly, but so was pokemon Red/Blue

              Anonymous

I'm not an expert, but from what I've heard about it Pokemon red and blue were also very efficient, especially in terms of memory usage and all the shit they managed to cram into and make run on a computer as basic as the original gameboy.
Anyway, you're right, there's nothing stopping someone from writing garbage in assembly but the lack of abstraction allows you to make lots of gains in efficiency if you actually know what you're doing. It'd be a terrible idea to use assembly for modern games because modern devs are shit and don't know what they're doing, but admittedly even if they weren't shit I'm pretty sure it'd still be a bad idea.

modern games are also ungodly larger than old games though, so you're dealing with massive teams
and a key point is that any code written needs to be easy to understand and bug-check
a moron doing moron stuff in assembly will create the absolute most arcane bugs that will probably require firing that person and scrapping everything they've written over the past year

Or how you _had_ to purchase creative cards or you were fricked or reliant on emulation layers and at that point what is even the point of dedicated soundcard. Or how cpus were advancing so rapidly you could be fricked out of current gen games for years because you invested month or two too early. Or how you could theoretically run Doom on 386, but if you actually wanted a playable experience you had to upgrade to 486.

Fortnite runs on Unreal Engine 5 and works on toasters. Blame lazy devs.

  5. 4 months ago

The engine itself is fine. In a case like that, the dev probably has enabled way too many high quality features that they don't need. As a player, you can probably fix these games yourself if you make a few tweaks to the config files. However if the game has more high quality assets then you are probably screwed because its probably a bunch of stuff not even meant for games that got thrown in there and are all being rendered at once.

      > the dev probably has enabled way too many high quality features that they don't need
As someone who gave Unreal 5 a try during the latest israelitenity fiasco, the main problem is that the an empty start with fricking *everything* enabled to max quality, and it require some serious effort and old-blender-tier blind UI navigation to disable even half of that shit.
It's actually easier to just make shaders that *mimic* a low-fidelity look than actually telling the engine to stop calculating a billion unnecessary effects.

Most of the necessary settings are somewhere in the project settings window, though at some point you probably want to customize what the scalability settings do also. In 5 disabling raytracing and lumen is immediately going to get you the biggest gains, but you can go as granular as shit like globally disabling metallic and roughness if you want to.

Not really, the Roman Empire itself was still maintaining them until the fall of the West. After Rome was sacked they fell largely into disrepair due to the government having taken a shit - aqueducts were low on the priority list. Some of them were kept functional in some provinces, and at least one in Rome, for some time. By the mid-late middle ages it wasn't exactly common knowledge, but learned people still had a general idea of how they were made.

Aqueducts are a solution for a very specific problem: massive cities built in locations that could not sustain them

the reason medieval cities didn't build them is because they didn't need them, cities were smaller and built with more direct access to water

ontop of that aqueducts represent significant flaws in a defensive wall, both Rome and Constantinople had their gates opened by soldiers who infiltrated through aqueducts

and lastly, aqueducts are not really that complex, they are mostly incredibly labor-intensive to build, and medieval europe did not use slave labor

assyrian records of eclipses, the earliest such records, match up to the expected eclipses from orbital calculations
since then every single recorded eclipse matches up

if there was 700 years missing we'd have noticed by now
and yes, it's pretty easy to calculate when, where and to what degree an eclipse happens or happened

                >aqueducts are not really that complex
The gradient calculation and the building precision required to implement it were.

it's mostly a matter of precision, but as long as you have the tools needed to measure the gradient the actual building was not quite as complex as people think
a medieval cathedral is drastically more complex architecturally than anything the romans built, the main thing that rome had that medieval europe didn't have is a massive pool of forced labor

nah we account for the shifts in orbit and rotation, pretty easy to do that too
but those are small and predictable, any event that would have shifted earth's orbit sufficiently to the point 700 years could have vanished would have caused the greatest mass extinction event in earth's history and likely would have wiped out anything other than the hardiest bacteria

ontop of that, earth's orbit shifting wouldn't have changed supernova events at all

I brought up the assyrians mostly to showcase we have a continuous record of astronomical events that goes back roughly 3000 years
and that if 700 years were missing, the assyrian records would not have matched up at all, since we'd be trying to match them to eclipses 700 years later

the only way an assyrian record of an eclipse 2600 years ago would match up to calculated eclipses is if it happened 2600 years ago
however if 700 years were missing, the assyrian eclipse records should not match up to the calculated events 2600 years ago but rather to the calculated events 1900 years ago

is it starting to make sense anon?

if you check it out you see what the discrepancy is
the first site only mentions the eclipses which have a known historical record tied to them, while NASA obviously lists all calculated eclipses

you'll notice that every eclipse mentioned in the first article is also mentioned in NASA (obviously)

                anon-chan
it mean same for practical terms

nah we account for the shifts in orbit and rotation, pretty easy to do that too
but those are small and predictable, any event that would have shifted earth's orbit sufficiently to the point 700 years could have vanished would have caused the greatest mass extinction event in earth's history and likely would have wiped out anything other than the hardiest bacteria

ontop of that, earth's orbit shifting wouldn't have changed supernova events at all

that is if event observed and reported was same event as event that is assumed to be

yeh that's pretty easy to do, astronomical calculations are ridiculously precise

and naked-eye visible supernova are rare enough it's pretty simple to match them to supernova-remnants

also if 700 years were missing that would mean 700 years were missing everywhere, so do tell me, is the Tang dynasty entirely made up?

Unity make it too easy to do something that "work", and thus attract noob code monkeys.
Unreal tailored itself for artgays, and thus attract people who don't want to be a code monkeys.
Unity default to no fancy effects at all, and will look like Bubsy3D if you don't do a bit of research.
Unreal default to ALL the fancy effects, and will melt your GPU over one cube if you don't do a bit of research.

It's still Collosal Order. They just completely shat the bed by aiming for an untenable standard in graphics on even cutting edge consumer hardware.
Cities Skylines 1 for that matter was already shit; but the usual PC hardware being murderously over-spec for the game hid a lot of the shit.

2 doesn't even look good graphically though, the lower poly artstyle of the original looks way less fugly than 2.

The first game is "really damn good" until you learn there is an object limit and you have to keep yourself from placing anything superfluous if you want to continue with your city after a while.
It's a fundamentally broken game and yet they sold 62 DLCs that are even now priced over $200.

The engine is actually incredibly well optimized. Devs just have to make use of the features. If you tell the engine to render all 16k polygon teeth from 500 individually rendered objects along with other objects in an extremely wide area then it's going to do just that.

LOD is an artists job. It requires minimal 'coding'. it's a case of selecting the range for each level then applying the correct mesh.

If you're building a gaming PC and you aren't using SSD for your games you're a fricking moron. My 4TB drive is for other media that doesn't need high read/write speeds to fricking be stable. That 2160p bukkake porn video isn't going explode my computer running off a spinning platter but game absolutely will. install programs and games on SSD. If you can shell out 1000 dollars for a graphics card you set aside another 100 for decent NVME. storage has never been cheaper than it is today you have no fricking excuse.

I'm so glad that they didn't even try with Cities Skylines 2. Now I know that the first game was just a small project that got big thanks to EA fumbling Sim City so bad and can just ignore this series altogether as well.

  47. 4 months ago

People that get an education for video game design aren't being taught anything of value outside of "use UE5 since it's being forced on all big studios." Even pajeets are being outsourced to just because they have the same basic knowledge for this shit everyone else does. UE5 on paper should be a huge step forward and yet everyone using it hasn't even come close to showcasing they have a decent grasp on it which leads me to believe that either no one knows how to use it or it's actually just dogshit and no one can use any of the things it advertises effectively. Given the current state of the industry where everything is either outsourced and/or given temporary 1/2 year contract workers, I'm assuming no one can fricking use this shit properly and the development cycle of the average AAA game sabotages itself.

You won't get passion or know how from people that go for official school documents. You get it from people that do the learning at home that actually develop something of substance and not the bog standard entry level shit just to enter a corp that will bleed you of all your time and energy.

All idtech and unreal games worked great back in the day thanks to actual engine developers working to optimize it for the game they were making, now they rather pay for some diversity hires to insert some postmodern bullshit in every game.

As always, people who have no idea on what they're yapping about pretend they know something about programming and 3D modelling.

Same shit went down with the sudden spikes of people who pretend they know how to program who were criticising YanDev for using if's instead of cases in C# while not knowing that it gets compiled to the same shit later on, and ignoring other actual problems with his coding, like not planning ahead and the whole bullshit structure of his programs.
