the main romance in the story was utter dogshit to the point where it makes the whole story seem worse-- I think the ending with the Bombship decision is one of the higher points in the franchise; and I was grateful for the addition of the squad stories
1 = soulful good game, original idea with good execution. didn't sell that well at first.
2 = mobile spinoff, still had some soul but it targeted the mainstream teenage anime audience instead of the more mature one. kind of interesting premise. sold okay.
3 = another mobile spinoff but this time with no original ideas, lots of rehashing from 2, extra waifuhomosexualry, a lame attempt to appeal to chuuni morons, etc. didn't release in the west so it absolutely bombed in sales.
the game that must not be mentioned was god awful, it only exists because the series was dead at this point.
PC port of 1 = this convinced sega people actually care about the series. great port.
4 = a proper sequel to 1, or that's what I would say if it wasn't again targeting a mainstream teenage audience. except this one didn't have any of the soul 1 and 2 had, it is the polar opposite of wholesome with all the cursing and stupid characters perpetually in bad moods, and the game had zero good original ideas. reading the director talk about why he wanted to make this game actually brought a tear to my eye and killed the last weeaboo bone I had in my body. it made me realize the men in japan are basically worthless at this point, literal moronic losers. and I see these types in most studios and they're the reason all the games have been shit recently.

That's more or less just vc1. The smaller maps in 2 and 3 don't lend to it. And scouts got nerfed heavily in 2 anyway. You can do it in vc4, but you don't need to. They aren't as strict with the number of turns to A rank.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sega makes a new gacha for VC with gameplay similar to the main games. Something to the level of Atelier's brand new gacha graphically. Valkyria Chronicles D doesn't exist

It's not. The gameplay is okay, but I'd prefer a real turn-based game (Fire Emblem or Xcom style), not something it between. The story is very linear, no choices, no different endings, no romance. All the soldiers have a backstory, but it doesn't matter at all, they are just like random NPCs, not companions.
What an unfortunate series. The first game had issues but it was fun and there was a lot of potential in the series. Then they followed it up with two PSP shovelware games and killed the series, with the third game never even making it out of Japan. Then Japan realized that computers hadn't stopped evolving in 1998 and they started porting every remotely decent 7th gen to PC and releasing it on Steam and the port of VC1 did well enough to miraculously revive the series, which they brilliantly capitalized on by making that terrible action spinoff nobody asked for. And then finally after like a full decade of nothing but terrible decisions they released the only actual follow up to VC1, which was unfortunately called VC4 (at a point where a majority of the people who were interested in the series had only played VC1) and didn't actually improve on the original that significantly. It was still a huge step up from everything they did between 1 and 4 but just kinda more of the same shit 10 years later didn't quite cut it and the series died again. Japan really became completely worthless once the yanks stopped running the country as their main cold war puppet in the Asia Pacific region.

The PSP couldn't handle the original's map design so we went from expansive battlefields to a series of tiny restrictive maps with the base hopping gimmick becoming an essential gameplay mechanic. 2 had some bullshit rng drop farming for class upgrades that 3 fortunately did away with. Both games had shitty stories, 1 was nothing special but the setting was novel and the cast was charming. 2 was 70% high school shit for some reason and 3 was full of dumb edgy shit.
Yea the super secret dirty work suicide squad that was retroactively behind every key moment of the first war, which is presented as a group of punished outcasts marked for death but then they just act like lovable anime goons like the cast of random civillian militia members and school students from the other games. Also some individual plot points like the israelite Black person who betrays the squad while acting like a self righteous c**t were done really poorly IMO. I think they tried too hard to over correct after the complaints about VC2.

Every story beat is played out. I beat the game, deleted it, and never played it again.
I just can't get into something that feels so cookie cutter and generic. The intro with Avan signing up to military school after learning about his brother was kino, and after that the game never recovered.

I liked 1 a lot but 4 really sucked. They tried too hard to counter the scout rushing cheese and made every level have a frick you, here's an ambush at the end moment, which was fricking great in that one mission in 1 but not good for every level.
Then there were op bosses running around everywhere, shit was less a tactic game and just a run around and avoid game.
VC2 has a variety of objectives, APC escort, defend the base(s), kill all enemies, collect scattered crates and of course capture enemy base or kill enemy commander objectives
I presume VC3 also has it but I haven't played it yet
The very first V2 mission is an escort one, in a new map, completely surrounded with an OP enemy commander in the same area

The missions in 1 and 4 take place on large maps with your entire squad. In 2 and 3 the maps are broken up into several areas and you can start each mission with a few squad members starting in each one. They're all connected to each other by a specific base camp and once you capture it you can transfer units between those camps. A lot of missions will have you clearing 2 or more areas in tandem and then combining your forces to tackle the last area which usually contains your mission objective. Or you can focus your units in one area, then transfer them to the second and clear that, and then transfer them to last, though the former method is usually much more efficient. But the point is you have more options basically. Watching some videos would probably give you a good idea of how different they can be.

You can't directly move from 1 camp to another in vc1 and vc4 unlike the psps games. You can withdraw at a camp and then essentially summon at another camp, but that takes 1 turn and a command point too.

Lol, most missions for me are usually just cheap tank and/or 1 shocktrooper. Everyone else exists to defend camps which never get attacked anyway
It's much more efficient than if I used 3+ units to push forwards
I never meant anything about dying though
Cheap tank can take a shot from anything that isn't a mauler or heavy tank
My shocktroopers recover more health than enemies can deal and usually, only 1 or 2 enemy units manage to attack per turn

I also was about to send Zaiga and then heard his "ready up" quote and it broke my heart so I then put literally everyone else in so I could hear their respective quotes and this guy seemed the most up for it
man I always wanted to try to fully wipe off enemy forces in the last sgafes but the game punishes you for attempting that and always encouraged the dumb scout rush strat

it's a very old game. it launched very early into the PS3's life cycle. at the time the philosophy of game design was still centered around making the game fun.
The biggest problem with VC is the fact that your rank is completely determined by how many turns you take to complete a mission, effectively giving you only one way to play the game. As much as I love every main game in the series, 4 games of that got really old. I finished 1 and 2 several times each and even played 3 with the fan patch but I have yet to finish 4 even though I bought it twice and have started it over a few times.
I'm almost done with the story on vc4. I've been enjoying it a lot, though I admit this last chapter feels superfluous even though Belgar hadn't been dealt with. Forsetti really felt like the main villain to me. Last chapters have all been nuts map wise though.
Haven't had a chance to play vc3, yet, but man 4 really went out of it's way to make sure the entire main cast has really dirty hands by the end of it, unlike vc1 and vc2.
Just finished the final mission and got the ending. I'm amazed the writers spared Crymaria. Now it looks like I've got a shit ton of post game content to do.

The US of V, instead looked at the Valkyria's Final Flame (the nuke they set off when they die) and said, "we can do better" and perfected the process of triggering a ragnite implosion chain reaction using a valkyria's final flame as a detonator. So yeah, not-America took the valkyria as nukes metaphors the previous games had and said, frick it nukes for real.

It's not. The gameplay is okay, but I'd prefer a real turn-based game (Fire Emblem or Xcom style), not something it between. The story is very linear, no choices, no different endings, no romance. All the soldiers have a backstory, but it doesn't matter at all, they are just like random NPCs, not companions.

What an unfortunate series. The first game had issues but it was fun and there was a lot of potential in the series. Then they followed it up with two PSP shovelware games and killed the series, with the third game never even making it out of Japan. Then Japan realized that computers hadn't stopped evolving in 1998 and they started porting every remotely decent 7th gen to PC and releasing it on Steam and the port of VC1 did well enough to miraculously revive the series, which they brilliantly capitalized on by making that terrible action spinoff nobody asked for. And then finally after like a full decade of nothing but terrible decisions they released the only actual follow up to VC1, which was unfortunately called VC4 (at a point where a majority of the people who were interested in the series had only played VC1) and didn't actually improve on the original that significantly. It was still a huge step up from everything they did between 1 and 4 but just kinda more of the same shit 10 years later didn't quite cut it and the series died again. Japan really became completely worthless once the yanks stopped running the country as their main cold war puppet in the Asia Pacific region.

The PSP couldn't handle the original's map design so we went from expansive battlefields to a series of tiny restrictive maps with the base hopping gimmick becoming an essential gameplay mechanic. 2 had some bullshit rng drop farming for class upgrades that 3 fortunately did away with. Both games had shitty stories, 1 was nothing special but the setting was novel and the cast was charming. 2 was 70% high school shit for some reason and 3 was full of dumb edgy shit.

I think they tried too hard to over correct after the complaints about VC2.

I liked 1 a lot but 4 really sucked. They tried too hard to counter the scout rushing cheese and made every level have a frick you, here's an ambush at the end moment, which was fricking great in that one mission in 1 but not good for every level.
Then there were op bosses running around everywhere, shit was less a tactic game and just a run around and avoid game.
VC just needs maps with more objectives other than "take the HQ"
Bosses are fine; but kill all the enemies or hold out x amount of turns would be nice
VC2 has a variety of objectives, APC escort, defend the base(s), kill all enemies, collect scattered crates and of course capture enemy base or kill enemy commander objectives

The very first V2 mission is an escort one, in a new map, completely surrounded with an OP enemy commander in the same area

The missions in 1 and 4 take place on large maps with your entire squad. In 2 and 3 the maps are broken up into several areas and you can start each mission with a few squad members starting in each one. They're all connected to each other by a specific base camp and once you capture it you can transfer units between those camps. A lot of missions will have you clearing 2 or more areas in tandem and then combining your forces to tackle the last area which usually contains your mission objective. Or you can focus your units in one area, then transfer them to the second and clear that, and then transfer them to last, though the former method is usually much more efficient. But the point is you have more options basically. Watching some videos would probably give you a good idea of how different they can be.
And it just hit me that you already played 2 and 3 so I explained how they work for nothing. 1 and 4 don't have the limitations of the PSP so the maps don't need to be split into multiple sections.
So 1 and 4 don't have bases scattered around the bigger map?
If yes then that means you'll rely on 1 or 2 units because it'll take a turn just to get a unit from one side to the other

You can't directly move from 1 camp to another in vc1 and vc4 unlike the psps games. You can withdraw at a camp and then essentially summon at another camp, but that takes 1 turn and a command point too.

split maps just work much better with VC's mechanics than single open ones. and they force you to use more of the cast.
I also preferred their gameplay, I think one big reason for me was because of the instant reinforcements from camps, for both me and the enemy.
Crazy to me they didn’t have PVP or even PVE customizable maps.

The biggest problem with VC is the fact that your rank is completely determined by how many turns you take to complete a mission, effectively giving you only one way to play the game. As much as I love every main game in the series, 4 games of that got really old. I finished 1 and 2 several times each and even played 3 with the fan patch but I have yet to finish 4 even though I bought it twice and have started it over a few times.

One annoying thing with 4 is grenadiers feeling more useful for the enemy than for you. They can't intercept for shit but the enemy's can easily frick up a shocktrooper that's running without nothing in the way? Frick off.
Also, having to destroy Klaus' moronic tank like 4 times when grenadiers can barely hit the fricking radiator made me just go back to lancers with some elevation.
And the ship orders are cool. When you can actually use them in like 4 missions.
