Definitely a top 5 game for me. Went through it several times within the span of a month and still think about playing more of it, although I'm clearing out the backlog first. Sucks that the sequel is an unfun bloated piece of shit.
I liked the sequel but it felt like a massive chore to play at times, learning skills was incredibly tedious.
Also maybe I was just bad at the game but did anyone else have trouble playing the game "fair"? I always felt like enemies were hitting like monster trucks and I ended up cheesing my way through most of the game, felt wayyyy harder than the first game.
Lezards tower is the difficulty spike. Not sure what you mean with cheesing. Vp isnall about deathblows, and best with mages using great magic. Otherwise you are fricked.
It's ok, the love story plot is disgusting and directly contradicts all the sequels.
continuity between the games was always a whatever thing. i think only 2 is actually canonically connected to 1 but they establish it is an alternate timeline still so it could do whatever it wanted. then everything after that is a standalone thing with reused characters.
My favorite rpg by far. The unorthodox gameplay set it apart of everything else for me, being a fan of fighting games, I found the combo system very enjoyable. It's not perfect of course, it takes like 40 minutes until the first dungeon and the voice acting is pretty shitty all around. Still, it never got boring, not even after so many playthroughs.
I loved it the first time I played it, which was around the time it came out. I was 16 then, I think. It has a great plot, great music, and unique combat mechanics.
However, I recently tried to replay it. I became frustrated at the grindy mechanics (triple if you play on Hard, you need to route and maximize your EXP). There are too many encounters. The spells and finishing moves also have *excessively* long attack animations. It just feels like the game doesn't respect your time.
And, of course, the requirements to get the best ending are utterly bizarre and basically require a guide to figure out. Since much of the plot is revealed in the best ending path, this is an absolute insult to the player. Great game otherwise.
Jelanda is a haughty ojousama with drills and Nanami is a yamato nadeshiko miko with a hime cut.
Hard is better because you can use the accessories that increase HP and CP gain per level since level 1 for almost every character.
The one complaint I have about this game is that your main party usually tends to be Arngrim, Mystina and some spear user (usually Lawfer or Aelia). Of course you don't have to use that party but it kinda feels suboptimal to use anything else especially considering the fact that you're never sending Arngrim or Mystina to valhalla.
>Mystina and some spear user (usually Lawfer or Aelia)
Nah.
Played it like 4 times. Last on the psp. I loved it, the setting and tge characters. Also as a teenager, that dragon lady gave my penis a funny tingling sensation.
>and you can only lower it once.
Huh. Not that anon, but in the mobile version you can modify that as much as you want if I remember right. Maxxing out her love of men was the first thing I did with her.
Hugely disappointing. Probably the second most disappointing RPG I've ever played (first would be Legend of Mana).
Terrible battle system that just reduces to "spam the giant voiced cutscene attacks every time in a row". Unfulfilling story that constantly suggests it's going to lead up to a grand ragnarok encounter with all the souls you've recruited but no it's just one last stage same as all the others with your selected party. Ultimately seems like it boils down to game had an "idea guy" who thought it would be great and then they took the path of least resistance to implementation.
You did unlock the reat ending, right? Surt is not the final boss.
It also should be noted that the first game is a half of the whole story and the next bame is BOTH a sequel and a prequel to it due to time travel shenanigans..
>they took the path of least resistance to implementation.
Considering all the fire hoops you have to jump through to get the A ending, what is the path of least resistence? They made bullshit and annoying dungeons like the Clockwork Mansion, shitty puzzles when you have to guide beams to melt things, those eyeball enemies that revived each other if you don't kill them all at the same time, etc. They are game design choices along many others that would drive away players / buyers.
>those shitty eyeball enemies that revive each other
They revive the last enemy killed, which means... they can actually revive a boss.
>fight Lezard + 2 eyeballs >kill Lezard first, his magic attacks hurt and no way those eyeballs will revive a boss >they fricking revive the boss with full HP
Bulkshit. Neither Arngrim or Mystina are that great. Any mage does well, and Arngrim is just okay. You can finish the game on hard mode with any party combo. I for one always sent Lawfer up in first chapter (or was it second)because I liked Belenus more and Aelias move set is pretty shit.
It's a game where I like the ideas more than the execution. Not just talking about the story - though that's neat too.
It's an interesting game and there's not much else that plays like it, but the anon earlier who said the game doesn't respect your time hit the nail on the head.
Cutscenes go on for a LONG time. Certain battle animations go on for a LONG time. Some levels frankly outstay their welcome, although every level does have a very very cool aesthetic.
Most people talk about the hoops you have to jump through for the true end, but what surprises me the most is about a third of all levels are exclusive to hard mode, replacing about a third of the levels from normal. It makes hard mode much more interesting to play through and some locations deliver a lot of story information in neat ways. If you 100% normal mode you've only seen about three quarters of the content in the game, which is pretty nuts.
It's both an incredible game, and one I don't think I'll ever play again. Two playthroughs was more than enough.
After Final Fantasy Tactics, it is probably my next most favorite JRPG on the original Playstation. I prefer the English names over the Japanese original ones. Arngrim is so much more a badass name than Aluzzi.
I like it too. Everyone's fixated on Pocky and Rocky but it does have the same fun as that game too.
>Cracked israeliteel case
Is that a special game to you?
Absolutely. I used to bring it over to a friend's place all the time. When everyone else was asleep, I'd chip away at the game. I think it is just the game case and controller pressed against it in my knapsack which did the damage. I'm still saddened about the damage too since I do love the game.
I did think I did great in the game beating it on the hardest difficulty setting, but I think it was a bug because it is labeled incorrectly where it is much more challenging choosing the easier settings.
>that limited edition box
mad jelly
It is the oldest edition and lacks all the new stuff it got in later releases like more cutscenes, widescreen support, and more. The calendar is outdated printed for the year 2000 which makes it less worthwhile now. Even the pocketwatch has no place in usage as well now, so the limited edition of Valkyrie Profile really does have its own Ragnarok doomsday.
I like how they really frick you in the ass in hard mode by making every new character start at level 1. That is particularly great since best characters either join you very late game (Gandar) or post main game (Lezard, Brahm, Freiya).
It's not perfect but one of my favorite games.
I miss beautiful spritework and when Jrpgs had interesting artstyles.
>hard mode by making every new character start at level 1
This is what makes hard mode easy dumdum.
Just give a new char the items that increase hp and CP on level up and pump them with exp.
they're telling you how to get the good ending
it's why I always think it's silly that people complain about it, if you play through the game and get the normal ending and pay attention you'll probably figure it out
I was thinking about that the other day. I've never felt so strongly about a NEVER EVER sequel because it really does feel too late for that to ever happen these day. She'd probably be a hard character to write from a main character perspective though. Which might be why they never did it.
I mean, the DS game had a really edgy dislikable main character who is straight up evil for 2 1/2 of the three routes in the game. Don't think Hrist could be much worse than that.

The Seraphic Gate in CotP has some silly scenes. One is with the valkyries, with Hrist complaining she got robbed of her game.
Wilfred and Ailyth observe the scene from afar, with the maid wondering when Hrist will get to be the protagonist, to which Wil responds :
"Don't hold your breath!"
I got to the overworld map but didn't understand the send souls to Valhalla mechanic so I stopped lol. Do you just pick and choose what party members to send to Valhalla? How do you build a good end game party? If I find a party that I like, I tend to want to ignore everyone else and just play the rest of the game like that
PS1 NTSC-U, because of some improvements exclusive to that version.
The PSP has some stretched graphics, those improvement are not included (so its like the original NTSC-J), plus 2D animation got replaced by 3D (this may or may not be a plus)
That there is a party in which you get many, many crystals from enemies. Lucian is the best at it and Badrach is a shit character, but at least he can get them decently well.

I thought I had found one of the greatest games of all time. Unfortunately, as the game went on, it became more and more exhausting to play until I quit and never played it again.
It feels like it should have been a hugely acclaimed classic, but something went wrong with the execution.
good game, loved playing it once in english and once in japanese too
the requirements for the best ending are 110% BS
played like 2hs and still was in some sort of intro with all-cringe dialogs and scripted battles, unbearable
Definitely a top 5 game for me. Went through it several times within the span of a month and still think about playing more of it, although I'm clearing out the backlog first. Sucks that the sequel is an unfun bloated piece of shit.

i've beaten this game three times and i've never got the true ending
I played some of 2 but dropped it after a few hours and forgot about it, beautiful looking game but somehow didn't grab me. What's 1 like?
It's ok, the love story plot is disgusting and directly contradicts all the sequels.
>the first game retcons the sequels
pardon?
continuity between the games was always a whatever thing. i think only 2 is actually canonically connected to 1 but they establish it is an alternate timeline still so it could do whatever it wanted. then everything after that is a standalone thing with reused characters.

You can now play the undub version too.
It's cool.
I know it's shounen as frick but love the battle quotes. More games need it. It makes it feel much more epic.
I loved it the first time I played it, which was around the time it came out. I was 16 then, I think. It has a great plot, great music, and unique combat mechanics.

OUGI
FINALITY BLAST
Played it like 4 times. Last on the psp. I loved it, the setting and tge characters. Also as a teenager, that dragon lady gave my penis a funny tingling sensation.
What dragon lady, Aelia? One of her hero traits is "does not like men," and you can only lower it once.
>hates men
>exposes her crotch for all men to see
i'll forgive her
Is it under garments or a codpiece?
clearly she is patrician and is wearing a chain mail leotard
>and you can only lower it once.
Huh. Not that anon, but in the mobile version you can modify that as much as you want if I remember right. Maxxing out her love of men was the first thing I did with her.
>needed CP
lewd
>Needed CP
Do women REALLY?
The combat animations are about 50% of the screentime. Frick that.
Otherwise pretty interesting game.
Greatest game I absolutely hate to play.

Seeing as LoM is one of the only JRPGs I like, I might have to pick this game up
>they took the path of least resistance to implementation.

The Namco Museum version of Legend of Valkyrie is kino. Good taste anon.

i liked her smug portrait

we got robbed, for real I mean

You can't send Arngrim or Mystina up, so most people will keep at least Arngrim til endgame.
For the first game, is it better to play the PSX version or the PSP one?
PS1 NTSC-U, because of some improvements exclusive to that version.
The PSP has some stretched graphics, those improvement are not included (so its like the original NTSC-J), plus 2D animation got replaced by 3D (this may or may not be a plus)
up to you as to what is more important
Is VP2:
1) worth playing?
2) a good game?
I've beat VP twice in 20 years.
Yes.
Yes, but it's very different.
How much different are we talking about?
The atmosphere is great but the gameplay is pretty mediocre. Also my copy always locked up when about to fight Gandar.
>Necrophiliac
What now.
hey, i remember those guys

what is the best way to start? ps1 psp phone
i was going to use the ps1 undub but someone said it was bugged
American psx version.
Hard mode isn't actually harder, you only have more options.
