Valve has completely betrayed their Mac fanbase
We supported them for years, and they suddenly remove our ability to play, or even access our skins

I had $2500 worth of skins in CS:GO that I can't access now, I'm seriously considering a lawsuit

I use a Mac as my daily driver and I don't even blame Valve for this.
Everyone knows you don't buy a mac for vidya, no matter how much Apple claims they care; if they did, they'd support vulkan natively and add some way to run 32 bit classic apps as well.

Macs as productivity machines is a psyop pushed by Apple when they pushed for schools to have their shitty computers. 7 years of Macs in middle/highschool and everyone besides Starbucks startup social media hipsters use Windows/Linux. morons like you will b***h about Windows being corporate slop, but then waste money buying into the walled garden Apple garbage. My wife is an interior designer and you'd think an industry like that would be a trap for Apple/Mac but its not.

    What is the mac niche?
It isnt audio or art production, it isnt rendering, the horsepower holds them back.
My Ableton and Cubase setups are too heavy for a mac, and the controller exclusivity is one-way (pc gets all).

      Anonymous

The niche is that it's a rock-stable OS that doesn't require setup and works well for most users.

On Windows you will inevitably fiddle with driver or update issues eventually, plus all the MS account and bloat they added in W10/11. On GNU you must configure your OS until it's perfect and you will have hardware issues with GPUs, laptops and new hardware; plus update bullshit in non-fixed release distros.

On MacOS you never deal with any of that. The niche is that "it just works" and doesn't get in your way. Plus it has a bunch of extra features if you invest in Apple's walled garden.

It's not for everyone and the machines are hilariously overpriced and brittle, but as an OS it's not bad at all just like iOS.

        Anonymous

I asked what the niche is, you didn't give me one.
The "rock solid" os comment doesn't really land in a thread about yet another thing mac cannot run.

        >On Windows you will inevitably fiddle with driver or update issues eventually
I have been using windows for 20 years now and I ran into driver issues once, when i tried updating laptop from 2013 to windows 11. This was because wi-fi module support was dropped and company that made it simply did not release drivers for windows 11.
        >plus all the MS account and bloat they added in W10/11
        What bloat
        >On GNU you must configure your OS until it's perfect
Ubuntu configuration takes less time than windows configuration.
        >you will have hardware issues with GPUs, laptops and new hardware
I have been using linux for 5 years now, mostly on laptops, and the only issue I ran into was that 3 years ago, when installing linux, it couldn't I dentify my gpu correctly automatically. Once I downloaded drivers from nvidia website it worked.

This isn't Valve's fault. not seeing the appeal of macbooks is a neet trait. if you actually had to work on a laptop you'd know.

My MacBook is a work computer, I wish it had Linux or Windows instead.

To port a game to macshit nowadays you have to jump through a bunch of hoops, Apple removed OpenGL support and they don't even support Vulkan natively, so you have to deal with godawful Metal or use something like MoltenVK and hope it works. Not to mention their chips are now ARM, so even more work, you'll have to port from x86-64 or use a translation layer with some performance penalty and maybe bugs. It's a mess. No add the fact they have a smaller userbase than Linux and you have a perfect recipe for why no one gives a frick.

Yeah. Many mac users even complain that many mac compatible games only work with intel macs only. Like don't they understand their ARM chips just aren't compatible?

Metal is actually a pretty nice API to work with, especially compared to Vulkan or DX12.
But of course the issue is that you'd end up wasting a bunch of time that you could have spent working on your actual game instead.
MoltenVK seems to work pretty well and barely has any overhead thanks to Khronos' layering strategy, but still it's beyond moronic that Apple doesn't support Vulkan natively, or at least work closer with the MoltenVK team.
Unless the developer wrote a bunch of assembly in their engine, or were stupid to use windows headers exclusively instead of using something like SDL, then it's extremely trivial to recompile for ARM/Apple Silicon.

Actually, how is this NOT lawsuit worthy? you buy the game and then they "update" it and you literally cannot play anymore

Nobody played CSGO on Mac OS, and less than a single percentage of Steam users use a Mac. This is entirely a you problem, buy an actual PC if you wanna keep up with PC gaming.
