None.
And it is boring, on top of being a living fossil.
Waaaaaah! Mommy, I want my magic to be just like in my MMOs! The scary OS martials are bullying me again!
Even WOTC pretty much abandoned vancian casting in 5e. Wizards no longer have to prepare each individual spell into a spell slot and lose it upon casting, they just prepare a list of spells and can cast them with any spell slot they like, which used to be only for spontaneous casters.
This is one of the big reasons sorcerers feel like lamer wizards in 5e.
at the very least they aren't like paladins which are like extremely lame versions of clerics. Or Rangers.
Not sure why sorcerers get metamagic but whatever, 5e is shit regardless
Paladins are great in 5e, what are you on about?
WotC catering to morons so more people can play their game is not a good thing, Anon.
D&D never did vancian right.
Anon playing a wizard in AD&D and earlier fricking sucked. Fighter types and thief types were largely expected to function without magic items while casters either had to hope the treasure table came up with some scrolls, suck the DM's wiener, or actively hunt down and murder other wizards for their spellbooks, which had a very high likelihood of resulting in you being murdered instead. Wizards who survived could get pretty powerful eventually, but survival was the hard part and they still had so few hit points that they were just an ambush away from being instantly vored to death by a Remorhaz.
Nope, spells were limited but actually strong, if you are able to do a bit of parallel thinking. But it implies not being a braindead MMO gay that spam elemental lazers.
The next level of vancian magic is to not have vancian magic.
Dungeons & Dragons 5e Sorcerer/Warlock build is the highest level I have seen vancian magic implemented in a game.
The Dying Earth roleplaying game by Pelgrane Press.
Huh. How is it different from OD&D’s implementation?
Different stats and skills made specific for the setting, incorporated a rock-paper-scissors style of talking (also based on the books' concepts), point-based type fo vancian magic, and other things specific to the setting. It was also written (or co-written?) by Jack Vance himself.
Dark souls 1&2
Dedicated casters only get around four spell slots but each slot has multiple charges
Anon said "next level" not "more limited and lame"
The DS system would be better for an rpg if the spells were more generic instead of being a handful of utility and a varying flavors of damage projectiles.
Having 4 casts of "Telekinesis" and 3 of "Illusion" is limited but a lot more interesting than multiple tiers of illusion spell that player just picks and choose based on what is optimal.
I'm amused by the fact that he's technically supposed to be a Wizard. I mean, he wields a sword, is a powerful demonic entity, and can basically do anything. Being a wizard barely features into it.
>can basically do anything
Yep, he is the average D&D wizard.
But he usually is limited when casting too many spells in the same day, and lack spells of certain schools.
I've never read the manga, so I don't know how far it goes into his abilities.
Its actually funny how in very early Bastard!! the setting followed a system much closer to Vancian magic, where the characters were actually concerned with how many spells they had left for the day, with some spells even requiring reagents or physical components. There was even one spell that could only be used depending on the current phase of the moon.
Of course, this was all slowly phased out as the series went on and it became more of a mana-meter type magic system, but it was interesting while it lasted.
I always thought "Vancian" is when spells are living things, which are summoned rather than castes.
Image sauce please. It looks pretty cool, and I want to know more.
Bastard!

Here is the setting's spell list.

Mostly, Vancian magic is hard to work with. You need to be borderline precognizant and the more spells you have the more likely that you will pick the wrong spells for that day.
Pathfinder still uses it but it's not something that's easily improved on. Simply expanding the spell list actually makes the system harder to use.
jojo is just gay vancian magic except araki keeps pulling new spells out of his ass and pretends the characters always had those tricks up their sleeves.
That's Bastard! not JOJO
Cringe
Have you tried the Goblin Laws of Gaming? They take vancian wizard and run with it, with spells being living (albeit ethereal) creatures that live in your brain and books.
