I think you are overestimating the amount of unplanned gay sex that takes place at anime conventions, or anywhere for that matter, considering how much preparation it takes to not make it a miserable experience for all involved parties.
It doesn't happen at the conventions, it's when you're invited to the after parties during them, which if you're not a total sperg is basically a permanent 'in' with those crowds and you'll be on the immediate re-invite list next time. If you don't get invited to one of those then you're essentially shit out of luck unless you connect with someone in the limited time you have while just hanging at the convention, which is rare but not impossible.

Having a friend along also seems to helps others first impressions of you.
