Gonna post about politics changes, here's the link if you want to read it yourself: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/victoria-3-dev-diary-97-open-beta-1-5-update-2.1600773/

    >The base of politics in Victoria 3 is the pops - and we are ever striving to make politics more interesting and varied, both in terms of national flavour and the shifting nature of politics as your nation modernises.

    >Interest Group Makeup

    >The 1.5 patch contains a battery of changes to interest group makeup, designed to make the political structure of a nation more dependent on laws, with pops aligning towards different interest groups depending on the social structure that the player has crafted for their nation.

    >The goal of these changes is to make interest groups more dynamic over the course of the game, with certain laws able to influence the power of groups in society in a way far more organic than a flat bonus to interest group clout. For example, in 1.5, there have been some changes to the Homesteading law.

  2. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

    >Instead of benefiting the Rural Folk directly, the law now benefits the political strength of small farmers, who own the majority of the land in the United States. But this is not the only change. Looking closer at the pops themselves, we can see that the farmers in Ohio are beginning to gravitate towards a new interest group.

    >Under Homesteading, farmers are much more free to claim land on the frontier for themselves and hire farmhands, thus making them members of the Petit-Bourgeois class.

  3. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

    >This, however, is not uniform across the country. Whereas in the North, where yeoman farmers predominate, there are enough middle farmers to form a sizable rural petit-bourgeoisie, the Southern slave states have an altogether different class dynamic. In the South, the presence of slavery stratifies the farmers into either extremely wealthy or extremely poor, sharply increasing their attraction to the Landowners, and weakening their attraction to the Petit-Bourgeoisie.

    >The result of this is that nations with Homesteading will gain a much stronger Petit-Bourgeoisie class, as the farmers who are too wealthy for the Rural Folk and too poor for the Landowners find their niche in the middle class.

If "Interest Groups" are no more descriptive of the pops in them, they should just use parties as this point. Now it's like there are too much "party" mechanics for the pop.

No, it's not. Parashit is again implementing larping shit that nobody asked them to do. It's ahistorical and pointless, at the same time they ignore historical outcomes if they're just slightly leaning towards right.

Itd be cool if the ahistory came from emergent gameplay and not a bunch of pre determined meme flow charts.

You know what's cool also? Leading your men to battle, but they deemed that ahistorical because you could lead their braindead AI into a shed and kill it there. So they thought that solution to that would be giving your armies to a braindead AI as well.

          This.
It should be "alt history" that were alternatives to the time... not just another stupid and shitty "Form Rome!" meme.
It'd be like putting a 20th century British feminist flag in a game about the early modern period as a revolutionary flag for the UK...

I agree with this. I'm totally fine with alt-his stuff, even the more ridiculous "Greece beats Ottomans in victoria 3" type ones, but only things that are plausible.

Rome makes sense in HOI4 because Mussolini had Roman pretentions. If we imagine a world where the Italian military was extremely successful, maybe him proclaiming Rome was possible. There is no equivalent in Vic3. I don't know if HRE makes sense in Vic3 though. I know more than the average person about the period, but not whether the HRE was looked back on favorably or was even still a concept people aspired towards. Maybe it was because the German emperor called himself the Kaiser just like the HRE one did?

            Idk.

isn't the problem that the HRE is a bundle of feudal states that cannot be played as a group?
I dunno if China even makes sense as a single country in paradox games but the HRE sounds like a joke to be playable as, like a Britain game where you directly own the thirteen colonies, Malaysia, India, Canada and Australia

Not ahistorical as the greeks considered larping as a nation of romans after independence (and some subpopulations still considered themselves rhōmaîoi until quite recently).
        >inb4 le byzantines are a different thing
The Byzantine Empire is just a meme name for easily differentiating between periods of roman history, people inside it still called themselves romans and their state "the state/empire of the romans".
Victoria 3 is still a shit game anyway.

What the frick is the point of the HRE? It's just the borders of greater germany with minor territorial changes. Is it just so ledditers can form le epic big germany without being le evil germany?

Byzantium makes sense at least. If a greek nation became large and powerful through an imperialist leader odds are they would proclaim themselves the successors to either the byzantine or alexanders empire, which are more or less the same thing. A large and powerful german nation wouldn't proclaim themselves the successor of the hre because most germans didn't need to look to the past for legitimacy and wanted a new better nation.

Holy because it was endorsed by the Pope who crowned the Holy Roman Emperors
Roman because it was Roman Catholic
Empire is false because Reich actually translates to Realm.

        Anonymous

Reich conceptually is understood as the same thing as empire even with the translation to realm. The reich refers to the idea of a universal realm/empire which encompasses all other political authority, which the HRE claimed to have.

          Anonymous

Which it did have. Even during the time of Voltaire the Empire was still able to assemble armies and functionally operate. It wasn't until Prussia started fricking shit up that Austria lost nominal authority, and even then Napoleon did far more damage to the institution than the Prussians ever could.

            Anonymous

No, I agree the HRE did have a claim to universal authority which was legitimate and actual, at least for a time. That said its real power to claim universality peaked and existed solely during the High Middle Ages. Its not even fair to say that it was the peace of westphalia that challenged this notion, the act of supremacy is propably a more fitting end point. So not even close too Prussia or Napoleon. (Also note that by the time of the war of the Austrian succession the feud system which was essential for the real makeup of the Empire was practically gone and replaced by leviathan court procedures, so the empire of medieval europe was completely gone)

          Anonymous

          But that's wrong.
The universal claim comes from the holy and roman, as the Kaiser was intended as a protector and worldly hegemon over all christendom. Reich is a far more common title that has nothing to do with that. Some examples: the frankish kingdom was called frankish reich. Austria is actually named ÖsterREICH, meaning the eastern realm of the Germans. In German Russia was often called the Russisches TzarenREICH, meaning Russian Tzarist Realm. This isn't a uniquely german thing either, just germanic. The swedes for the longest time called their state the svea rike or swedish reich.

            Anonymous

Words can mean multiple things at once. The Roman Empire called itself Imperium Romanum, but imperium doesn't just mean empire, it's also the power of command that any official wields, even the lowliest ones. It's very similar to 'Reich' in that regard, which can be used to describe any realm, even that of a small barony, but in a more specific sense refers to the Kaiserreich, europe's universal monarchy.

paradox games are fun but, but the community of self-described "history buffs" are the fricking worst. it literally doesn't matter what is done, they will find some way to shit up discourse with either their conservative victim complex, or their inability to understand the need for abstraction when creating a video game such as this. it's all so tiresome.

nobody talks about the game. they talk about this imaginary fantasy game that perfectly simulates the entirety of human history and development. something that is very obviously impossible. fricking step it up.

      >A bit of additional context here: these orders are very WIP, both their names and their functions. They're not intended to be universal and always available, but rather unlocked by specific traits, skills, tech, laws, etc. Many effects have been moved from traits to an order unlocked by those traits, to give the player a bit more control and agency, but the intent here is not that this should lead to some sort of micro hell where you have to constantly manage specific commanders' orders - rather, they're meant to work as stances you can opt to "upgrade" to over and above the basic Advance/Defend behavior. It's very experimental and something we're open to rolling back for the final release if it doesn't lead to more fun gameplay in practice.

yea honestly 1.5 is imo the start of the good phase of vic3. pretty much all the major problems people were voices are fixed now, and with the military rework generally working decent I'd say the game is solid
It's a strict upgrade from Vic 2 now without needing to cope about "it's not a war game" or whatever.

said, but I'd wait until SOI in the spring if I were you. By then it'll be an order of magnitude better. There are plenty of good games to play in the meantime, + legacy of persia comes out in 1 month for ck3.

Vic3's been shit for a while, but it hasn't been more shit than Vic2 (even with HPM) since they fixed the game-breaking release day bugs.

      Anonymous

No, and I was watching a presentation by one of the Paradox engine devs and apparently they severely fricked up the design of Vicky 3 in such a way that its simulation is not very easily parallelized (compared to say CK3 which is quite well parallelized - although by the same token CK3 does have a less complex simulation goal) and there's not really a clear path to fixing it.

So while they're trying to fix all the missing content and broken systems they ALSO have the problem that this game in the most complex line of Paradox games has a major performance issue which will be difficult to resolve.

Better to just wait for Project Alice and/or the Smedley Kernel.

Germany forming was definitely not a given in 1836, it should not form in every game.

on the contrary it should form every game unless the player interferes.

Kleindeuschland shouldn't form every game, but some form of Germany should, either the historical route, or the Frankfurt Parliament, or Austria asserting hegemony over the region and shifting to a more pro-German identity (at the expense of increased unrest in its non-German territories), or some kind of "reduced success" for Prussia wherein they're able to unify the historic German Federation but not to wrest control over the south from Austria.

The idea that Germany just wouldn't unify at all is silly, there was a strong national consciousness by that point and a growing desire for political unification; the only question was what form it would take.

        >Germany forming was definitely not a given in 1836
It was VERY given. The question was not "if", or even "when", but "under whos leadership". The only reason why it didn't happen already in 1848 was because Frederick William was too proud for his own good (notice how pace toward unification skyrocket afer his death) and torpedoed that on utterly moronic "no crown from the crowd" move. I mean what sort of moron it takes to NOT take a crown you are given by popular vote of countries that would otherwise oppose you in every possible way?!
        >b-but he was based

            >HURR THAT DOESN'T COUNT, BECAUSE MUH CROWD OF COMMONERS
All of Scandinavia has monarchy by popular vote. Same with Netherlands - and they were a fricking republic, for frick's sake.
And literally the second Fredrich was declared dead, his own cabinet instantly started making open moves toward unification anyway. He was the only obstacle, and they had to quite literally wait him out

        >it should not form in every game.
The problem with that is Germany is one of the few European powers almost every other European power can fight due to the way wars work. Germany borders almost every other major European power or can be bordered by all other major powers if they are allied to any of the various nations surrounding Germany, so they are a great late game nation to have no matter what.

If Germany, or at least the NGF, does not form there needs to be some sort of flag that railroads other nations like Austria, Denmark, Belgium/Netherlands, or if they're released, Poland so they form a somewhat central major power that unites their lands and then starts eating into Germany to give them that central major power that can fight almost every other European power in late game.

Prediction: the SOI expansion will add the German Confederation as an SOI under Austria's control. This will give the Austrian player a good reason to Oppose the Unification of Germany, as then you will lose your dominance over the German states. Holstein (or is it schleswig?) will be a puppet of Denmark but technically in Austria's sphere, which will give them a reason to go to war over it if Denmark attempts to integrate the province, as was the case historically.

I can't predict the specifics. That's what I know. How do I know? Divine source. God told me. I think it's a really cool idea.

with the new province exchange mechanic things like that should be fixable, which is what happened historically. The USA and Britain agreed to make the 49th parallel the border between Canada and America, effectively ceding the Washington territory.

Regarding setbacks, how do you play the game? Do you try and play optimally, restarting or savescumming if you get fricked up, or do you treat it like a story, where setbacks are an essential part of the narrative, even if they're major?

For example: if you play the ottomans and fail to reform the government, getting the 'dead man of europe' modifier, would you start over or just do the best you can, maybe consolidating into Turkey by the end of the game?

I guess this technically applies for all paradox games but this is a vic3 thread so stick to that.

      Anonymous

i savescum like mad. enactment RNG is determined by the day. october 13th could be a good tick for the law, and october 14th could be a bad tick.

increasing or decreasing the enactment time by a few % will shift the day it ticks. excess authority speeds up enactment time. so you can remove or add consumption taxes at your leisure to fish for a good tick.

this does remove challenge, and this does mean i'm bad. however FRICK RNG law enactment. that system is so fricking stupid.

Austria should be split up in to Austria and then a bunch of PUs under Austria to represent the absolutely TURBOFRICKED nature of the Austrian 'state'. I don't even know if you could call the Austrian empire at the time a state considering the overlapping layers of post-feudal obligations, concessions to the estates, and sub-governments everywhere.

I think it would more accurately represent the situation instead of Austria being a big blob of kickass with some minor ethnic unrest occasionally.

Victoria 2 & 3 don't represent internal governments, even though they should. I'm actually kind of amazed at how Paradox segments features that should be in all their games into only one series. IE CK has some representation of internal government subdivisions, and monarch relationships, and EU and Vicky should have those too, but don't... Vicky has pops and other games don't, etc.

do you mean specifically in 1.5 or just in general? i haven't played 1.5 yet which changes things a bit because goods have local prices, making it more cost efficient to stack certain goods together (from what i've seen, in 1.5 perm is a great state to build construction sector stuff in russia).

but in general russia is ez as frick to get to #1. you just do what you do in every other country to grow gdp, which is maxing out income and consumption taxes in the early game, and entering the construction sector feedback loop where you build more construction sectors so you can build more goods, some of which you'll use to fuel more construction sectors, and so on. countries with huge populations and good starting income like qing and russia are OP for spiraling.

also google the latest "market liberal" ideology trick that you can do with russia so you can pass laissez faire early. i never play russia so i don't know what it is specifically but it involves exiling a leader or some shit.

Diplomatic plays need a revamp. I've observed 2 games now and both time Germany did not form because when it came to the brothers war all the major powers just supported Austria and declared on Prussia. Absolutely curb stomping Prussia so much that they were unable to do anything for the rest of the game

Seems like any war no matter how small the war, there's always a couple of GPs taking sides.

      Anonymous

Just to add my current game as the Ottomans (not that it matters) Prussia have just started the Franco- Prussia war. The US, China and and bizarrely the Ivory Coast have sided with France and currently have troops fighting on the frontline. This is in 1868.

It's not even about power plays being shit (don't get me wrong, they have plethora of issues), it's that they didn't bother to write 5 lines of script to handle unifications in any meaningful way. And without dedicated mechanics, their equally poorly written AI has no clue what to do, so it declares a war instead, which then due to how fricked the war system is, proceeds to lose.
In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, but other than successfu bluff of going to war, your alternative for unifying both Italy and Germany is to just DoW on other countries. In other words: either they fold under pressure of war, or you simply conquer them if that fails.
      Which is beyond moronic

People usually build up large plantations of single resource in one state which generates large profits (think dyes for example) which results in big wages even for the "discriminated" laborers. They also get access to your whole market while not paying any taxes, which gives them greater purchasing power than any of your actual non discriminated pops.

    >The 1.5 free update expands the Scramble for Africa with new, specialized colonial administrations that may be formed in several African regions. Using the new Expand Colonial Administration journal entry, unlocked along with the Scramble for Africa, colonizing powers may assign control of their African colonies to a new subject state.

    >These administrations make use of the new dynamic tags feature, which allows for the creation of new, extremely configurable nations in script. Rather than relying on existing tags for your mod’s warlord period or seven-sided civil war, the create_dynamic_country function allows for rapidly defining several new nations at once, configurable with whatever laws, cultures, religions, or names that one wishes to assign them.

    >The result of some colonial administrations may be seen [in pic related], with Belgium handing control of the Congo off to a colonial administration, and France splitting its territories in West Africa in twain between its Guinea and Outer Hausaland administrations. The names and requirements for these colonial administrations are currently a work in progress - one concept we have for the finished product is that each colonial administration will possess dynamic names derived from their overlord - for example, French Senegal, or French Niger, or the Slovenian Raj.

How do we feel about this?
    I think it's a great change.

It's a good idea and a dynamic tag framework will be good for modders, but right now it doesn't seem like there's any reason to actually use the feature.

You actually get way more from subjects than if you directly controlled the land. Unless you are a low pop country that is. A Scandinavian nation wants to directly control everything because they don't have the pops to do much of anything, but a nation like Russia will hit the end date before it runs out of pops so direct control is entirely irrelevant.
Also african shitholes are just that, shitholes. outside of the good rgo provinces you don't give a shit about them the second you're able to expand into the real treasure, Asia. India, Indonesia, China, Japan, they've all got delicious states with good rgos and/or absurd pops. the african shitholes will provide you some tribute and they will naturally grow their gdp faster since they're in your market which is a net benefit since you don't have to waste time building in them.

      Anonymous

it's bad because the AI is bad and doesn't build like it needs to. using a mod that improves AI would probably make it decent. i think they plan on adding other-country investment in the diplomatic update (which is the one after 1.5) so that should also make the colonial states useful.

You do not build fast enough or have the economy to sustain high enough levels of construction as Russia to run out of pops. And this is even with VFM which I would describe as "cheaty bullshit" with multiple dependencies that pay 20-40k in tribute each.

this might be my ignorance talking because i usually start as ~medium nations like egypt or belgium and i swell up to like 100 mil pops by end game. but with a 3000 construction sector i run out of employment no matter what i do, no matter how many qing states i annex, no matter how much of africa i colonize. i'll do a russia game some time to make sure but i'm pretty confident that you can scale up your construction sector and get to 0 unemployment as russia even if you chip away at qing and such. but i'm doing a korea run soon so the russia run will be awhile.

Man, they should really step away somewhat from their strict adherence to marxian politics.
The way fascism exists in the game doesn't make sense and is usually too weak They will never drop this completely ofcourse, but you would think they should realize that middle class politics are fricked in this game and that "petite-bourgoise" doesn't exist IRL in how Communists think it does. Perfectly encapsualted by the game itself as the PB very rarely becomes powerfull and you thus don't get fascism nor any other authoritarian right-wing to power unless you boost landowners and get RNG right-wing Militarists and Industrialists.

Anarchism meanwhile is easy to implement and maintain lol

I find their version of trade unions similarly confusing.
Anarchic communes with big state welfare...

While he said something stupid that doesn't excuse Paradox from releasing beta patches that are extremely buggy, buggy to the point that testing it is near impossible, for example how are you supposed to test immigration or even just country balance when migration is completely out of whack?

      What's the migration problem?

        Anonymous

Basically new world countries get gigantic amounts of migrants from day one even without mass migration and that feature doesn't even work right now.

Well how else do you expect the US to be a great power in the game within its timeframe when they weren't until WWII? To start as one? With the mass migration mechanic but it doesn't work, right now Canada becomes an indian colony after just a couple of decades because immigration is overtuned. Anyway the biggest issue is the AI spamming military units and not knowing how to handle/merge them

The idea that other areas of the world were on a different track of development and had to conciously westernize their institutions and culture in order to keep up with the West is white supremacy. In reality, Sokoto was only 50 years away from inventing railways on it's own.

Yeah, markets are like spheres of influence from vic2. However, SOI (the first big expansion coming in spring) will add 'regional power blocs' which will be customizable for different purposes, as well as foreign investment and the ability to mess with your puppets' politics. It seems like it will be a separate kind of sphering concept on top of markets.

I just can't get over how comically fast you can turn Japan into a serfless, open-rading, recognised-great-power, presidential republic. Can be done by 1850 without abusing saves, maybe earlier.

homie, on my very first run with this game, I conquered all of India as Punjab by 1851, while being a republic with universal male suffrage and economy bigger than the next 3 countries combined. This game is just a joke, but that's part of the charm I guess - instead of being a semi-serious strategy game, it went full meme territory: "What if Kokand developed railway in 1845?" and then you paint the whole world in their color.

How did you beat the UK

          Anonymous

You DON'T go to war against it.
UK only ever gets involved if you DoW EIC directly.
The trick is to DoW countries within India that are independent and share border with EIC. Since you are unrecognised power, UK literally can't touch you, unless you first poke any of its subjects. But if you go against, say, Sind, EIC will side with Sind, without any UK support. And get its teeth smashed, because you have stronger army than EIC and can easily bolster it some more.
Rinse and repeat with other places around Indus Valley, each time carving up large chunk of EIC in the process. By the time you own 2/3 of India, go against them directly. UK is going to do frick-all. And because you pretty much ruined their business in India, they will be maybe half as strong as they should have been when you peg their ass directly. You have endless supply of manpower and can easily focus on just mil tech to keep pushing. It's laughably easy to get Brits out of India. At least when playing as China you have scripted debuffs that can ruin your day if you don't know what doing (or just get the bug with Taiping rebellion, which can't start, since your country isn't a run-down hell-hole, and the game just doesn't know what to do now). India? Just pick Punjab and roll over EIC.

I'm playing Vicky since original, so that's more about how busted 3 is rather than anything else. In original, I would be lucky to survive till 1900 as Punjab, in 2 it was a big gamble to try to take over India (and one of the most common challenges). In 3, it was a walk in the park.

You have access to Chinese market, and their protection for first 30-40 years (it becomes worth less and less as time goes). You also have less shit starting laws than Japan.
In other words: you are better version of Japan with better economic prospects, and far better options for long-term development (including making China your little b***h, while still profiting off their never-sated market, to which you can haul shit overland)

Ok, I understand now. Focus on industrializing with China as a dumping ground for your products, start colonizing around 1860-70, backstab China and steal Manchuria, make it a puppet state. ???. Profit.

The funny thing is that there is no difference in gameplay between 1836 and 1936, practically no difference between having all technologies and no technologies. You're just building inputs and outputs.

maybe i'm just doing something wrong but my gdp would never be this low by this point in 1.4. 1.5 is tough or i'm just doing something moronic. also i don't know why brazil got india from britain. they got it back in like 1850 or 1860 or some shit.

Well there are a few things

      #1 pops
You've got 14.6mil, you need high pops for high GDP or else you'll always just be a "top 10"

      #2 army
You have a humongous navy and army, and for what? You've taken almost no land, it's dead money, either conquer or demilitarise

      #3 resources
I can see coal, and tools are way in need, you need to be on top of those constantly to keep costs down and enable more construction

      #4 DEBT
gold reserves are bad, you want zero reserves and instead have a bit of debt (if you can get a higher rate of return on spending using debt than the interest, you've unlocked unlimited money)

        Anonymous

yea but i'm usually in a position to have a lot of pops and territory and huge GDP and debt by this point but i'm not in 1.5.

Poor laws IRL were FEMA camps but real, "indoor relief" was concentration camp tier which was why people would rather freeze and starve to death.

The description mentions poor houses. Which was pretty much a "work for food" type of deal, except you can't leave the house without working first. It's pretty much modern American private prison, providing manual labour for the price of a hot meal and some literal pocket change.

Kinda. It can't be cheesed as easily as it was previously. It's still incredibly one-sided and can trigger by new year of 1837, so go fricking figure. In my most recent game (as Mexico), I've got ACW start in 1838 and I've barely managed to steal Luisiana from the Confederacy, before Union utterly annihilated them. At least the Dixie got the semi-historical borders for that one, as they've got Ohio as an extra.
The big problem is still with triggers and how busted the combat resolution is, so you can still just cheese the conditions for the war. It's perfectly doable to get Confederacy contained into a single state when they pop-up, without any barracks, and just roll over them in a single "battle". At least you can't goad them with debt slavery anymore

Yeah, but why even not having efficiency techs from the start, and then never implement them, but instead trying to balance the economy without them.

I'm sorry, are you by chance legally moronic? Because if not, you should apply. There is a disability dole to be taken for being moronic.
Does any of the PMs decrease intake of goods? No, not replace, decrease. How about producing more goods (friendly reminder 9 out of 10 "higher tier" options produce LESS shit out of MORE resources) then? No? Then what the frick are you even talking about?

PMs are part of the problem, not the solution. Unless we are talking about them decreasing number of workers needed (and not all enterprises do it "properly"), then PMs cause further inefficiencies, rather than improving output or at least decrease input

There IS an output modifier in the game files, that's fully operational. Except nothing uses it for anything.
In other words: there are output efficiency mechanics. The game just refuses to use them

um then one of you guys needs to make a mod that replaces a lot of the construction mechanics with something that automatically improves output efficiency.

and do not make it OP. if GPs are consistently getting more than 300 mil GDP by the end of the game then you need to nerf the efficiency gains.

        hop to it.

All it really takes is adding efficiency output to specific techs from specific techs, and then adding additional bonus as a choice during related tech events. Because this command can be specified to a single category of building (say, all farms getting a bonus from tractors being researched), or even just specific building type (say, just wheat farms getting bonus from intense agriculture)

The worst thing you can do in this game is get your lower strata to 15 or higher SoL. Not so bad if you are a small fry leeching off a bigger market (say, Cape Colony or Cracow), but a horrendous spiral of death if you are one of the majors or even regional powers with few million people to feed.

        Anonymous

15 is still kinda doable, as long as you can get silk going.

At SoL 15, your pops start to demand the following:
Luxury clothes & furniture, tea, coffee and wine (unless your country is muslim, then you are one problem less) and also services, transportation and cars
This can entirely butt-frick your country, since now 100% of your population demands goods that the game considers rare, hard to produce etc. The demand spikes so high, there is no way on earth to produce that much with your own population, especially when it comes to luxury clothes and furniture (they are an offshot of producing the regular version)
And if you somehow weather through this, SoL 20 is going to flat-out kill you, since your pops will STOP demanding:
grain, wood and fish (the last one is actually good)
          And instead start to demand:
Groceries, a minimum of 10% of meat and fruits, sugar and also telephones, while variety of pre-existing needs is re-evaulated.

It is demonstrably impossible to produce sufficient amount of groceries to feed any population where lower strata starts requesting groceries. And this is their most basic need, responsible for easily third of all their needs and thus spendings. The fact they start to demand minimum ratings of meat and fruits, along with added sugar consumption means you have to compete over input resources for your food industry with just regular pop consumption.
SoL of 15 for lower strata is a death wish, SoL of 20 is being suicidal

            Anonymous

so you're saying you should start conquering qing states in the late game to maintain demand for grain/wood/fish for the new lower strata you're recruiting

              Anonymous

No, quite the contrary. You should unironically genocide China and India, because their populations are something the game isn't designed for and create a separate problem to too high SoL.
Namely, the game is designed with being a mid-sized, semi-densely populated European country. If you have more than 20 million pops or 30 states, the game starts coming apart on the seams. If you have more than 30 million pops, your economy will commit sudoku by early 1870s, unless you came to that population slowly and over time (so both Italian and German unification doesn't fully count).
The actual problem is as follow: you should NEVER develop entire states of your country and deliberately and intentionally trigger mass migration from them. This way, your overpopulation (again, anything above 20 mil) is kept in check. If you go to Africa and/or conquer China (or just play as China), you are making the problem ten times worse, because you suddenly have bazillion of peasants that will quickly reach SoL of 15 and frick you sideways. And it's impossible to tax all the shit to decrease demand, because you will run out of authority before you even start.

tl;dr the game is completely fricked when ti comes to big populations, and entire economic model is build on having insufficient pops, not excess ones.

My problem is there is no incentive to push me to actually improve standard of living, for most of the game it's a meaningless modifier that doesn't provide any benefit. I could imagine it being a usual metric if you as the player where attached to an entity like a political party so you had to keep it high to keep in power but your not so apart from keeping it above the minimum required what's the point.

              Anonymous

              >My problem is there is no incentive to push me to actually improve standard of livin
But it just happens on its own.
Even if we assume a hypothetical scenario where you only build military-industrial complex and no consumer economy, you will cause your population to gain income and thus increase SoL and thus get fricked.
Also, the game steadily enforces on you minimal SoL requirement to not get into an endless revolution (which is why so many AI controlled small countries end up in endless revolts by mid-1840s, as they struggle to provide even the default level), so you eventually HAVE to get SoL of at least 10 to not get fricked over. And that will force you to expand consumer goods industry, and that will ramp up your SoL anyway.
              >doesn't provide any benefit
As already explained, it provides steep penalty when minimum isn't met. So it's less "do this to get bonuses", but "do this, or get fricked over entirely by peasant revolts every 3-5 months"

Yes but its too easy too raise standard of living just by playing the game normally. I have never felt a need too worry about meeting the minimum requirements, for most of the game you can safely ignore the entire mechanic

I got into Britain's market and it was a golden age, economy was exploding, so much so that I had to conquer new land just to have the pops to work in anything I built, happiness was through the roof, everyone was getting every single good they could ever want and more, then I got kicked out of the market and my entire country just imploded because 95% of my workers refused to work jobs because they weren't being paid enough which meant noone was getting anything they needed which meant sol plummeted 10+ points across the board and everyone was angry and I couldn't do anything.

              Celcius.

The solution to your problem is re-introducing artisans. Except that would require a level of fine-tuning that the game will never have, since it's a half-baked from the get-go.
As such, artisans were replaced with easier to make, easier to account for factories, the same way how Vicky 1 handled production: you needed a specific building to produce specific thing. Except different buildings were making different shit and space was severely limited, so there was just no way to implement an autarky build on iron, coal, wood, grain and meat and instead uncivs were stuck with basic shit to sustain themselves.
Trade worked differently, too, so you could actually just access global market and buy whatever you needed, rather than having this idiotic trade system, where every single country has to set up separate trade routes for specific single good, and only if they have that specific producer within their range/interest.
All of which boils down to "ok, there are 5 of us, and 2 are doing graphics, while the game comes out in eight months". There is no conspiracy, agenda, ideology or whatever else you delude yourself with. It's a cost-cutting measurement of an already underfunded team of incompetent IT students

                Also, consider this:
When the game was still in dev, they DID have a separate system for artisan production and manufactories, and then the actual industrial process of specific factories, too. It got shanked, no now all that's left are big-ass factories, or nothing at all, with no middle ground or steps between

Because out of all possible solutions, artisans were the least shitty one. The only real problem Vicky 2 had with them was their faulty demotion process, which meant they've lingered for decades, despite being constantly improverished.

What about like how urban centres naturally pop up we could have the same but for "small workshops" of different types, and they employ shopkeepers or something. Would that not solve the problem? Then you can just have subsistence farms making basic agricultural goods, and whatever?

There wouldn't be a selection bar, they'd be unmicroable, unupgradable (like subsistence farms). They'd be less efficient then a factory so you'd slowly see the workshops disappear over time. I don't see what the problem is with a solution like this?

Sp far - you can't. It's still a single front, from Romania to Caucasus, except there is a fricking sea in the middle.

And nta, but the problem with such solution would be that it's pointless in the first place. To have an urban center, you need to have urbanisation of 100. That means your state has 20 RGOs or handful of factories. Thus, if you have those, you are nowhere in the need of the minuscule production it would offer to you, and in fact getting to it would require setting up the industry you are trying to replace. with subsistence-like production
In other words: it's counterproductive and solves shit

Is this game playable now, or should I wait a few more years? I had the urge to play Victoria 2 but then remembered the clunkiness and no UI scaling

because some of us aren't using 1366x768 displays anymore
truetype fonts and scalable UI is only good thing about modern pdx engine

And as for your main question - nope, it's still fricked and at this pace it won't be ready prior to 2026, if ever. The economy kinda doesn't work on core principles, and those are hard-coded, so unless there will be some total overhaul, the game will never be playable
