as soon as share holders, stock prices, parent companies, etc are a factor it's over for any kind of genuine art and innovation. This is true of every industry and art form not just video games. Once a company is publicly traded it Is put on a swift and inevitable path to a point where the main focus of the company is its place on some larger commerical structure and all that comes along with it, whatever product they produces is just a means to an end and will be bastardized or outright replaced in order to keep the gears turning. Think of it kind of like institutional capture, the former an supporting / secondary elements of the company which existed to aid in the main goal (making a good game) grow on size and importance until they hold the majority of internal power or sway and this become the main focus of the business.
Ive considered this; however, they’d make a ton of money if they just put out a good game. Perhaps there’s a lot of short term profit that can be made by shitting out barely playable garbage. A ton of people will still buy it and they’ll make some money back for minimal investment. But if you just put a little bit more time into making a good game and listening to the core audience, then everyone will buy it, not just die hard fans. And then they’ll recommend it for years to come. Then DLC will be more attractive because the base game is already good. Genuinely good games still make a ton of money, and it keeps goodwill alive for more purchases in the future. Putting out trash is shortsighted and makes less money in the long run. I mean, look at the implosion of Creative Assembly recently—there will baciallt br no more total war money because the franchise is dead.

I know it's not /vst/ material, but look at Overwatch 2, they made so much money from cosmetics that they cancelled whatever plans they had for a proper (paid!) campaign mode in favor of retooling their dev team to basically be a cosmetics DLC farm because of how much money was made. As a large company (I'd go as far as to say that Paradox is AAA now, but it's debatable), why would you ever do the difficult, costly and more honorable thing when the easier thing will make you just as much money, if not more?
