.flow might be a bit more thematically apt, but in practice it's much more tightly structured than YN. You'd want something that feels like diving into a digital wild west, and .flow's horror aesthetics might match what you'd find in a particularly fricked up part of it but YN or 2kki has a more detached, dreamlike nature.

If you can get through the first 6 episodes the mafia plot starts up and it gets good. I know that sounds like a lot but to it was worth it. I thought the early episodes were too experimental in a bad way and too much time is spent following the main character bleeding out on the streets. It's like a completely different show past that first hurdle.
My only other complaint is that it leans a bit too hard into misery porn.
Lain isn't deep but the character development of Lain and the shows understanding of the internet and anonymous communication despite being the late 90s is godtier writing. They neglected the villain though and the show kinda just collapses into schizo nonsense. It does some things exceptionally well though.
