video games as therapy

I went through a traumatic thing. It got me to the point where I couldn’t function at work anymore. I spiraled for a month. Then I played a game called cult of the lamb. It’s basically a work sim / dungeon crawler. I put all this time into it and I beat it every which way. It caused me to develop all these realizations. Nothing new, same stuff people have been preaching forever: it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, and your enjoyment of it. After I beat it I was disappointed that it was over. Kinda like people feel about life. And it was just a game. Just like life. I was disappointed in all the time I had spent on it, same as how people get disappointed on how much time they spend on work or things they enjoy but aren’t the best for them. Then there’s the resource deliema: let’s say ur rich irl. Like so rich you can’t spend it fast enough to get rid of it. What do you do then to be happy? Well in the framework of the game (and life) you set benchmarks / limits on yourself, or impossible goals to hit. Hope it makes sense, thought I’d share

I guess the x relevancy to this would be I didn’t think I’d ever be normal again. Ok again. Functional again. I was pretty sure I was broken. But just sitting there and playing this game helped me work out, me, being in my head, and just overall stress from everything. In my experience, that shouldn’t be possible from a video game, let alone one where you play a fricking lamb leading a cult.

I'm glad anon. You're doing great work and you need to learn more about these thoughts and apply them to others so they can be freed like you. Keep your head up and your heart save eyes open. I play it with my wife and I think you might like dead cells it has the same level of replay. Remember they're afterwards adding new features. I created a mushroom cult in the game it's fun. Did you do the pranks on the never who you feed poop to? The guy asking for pranks eventually escalates to murder. It's a life lesson.

Lol does he really? I didn’t know that. Nah, but I got to the point in the game where they don’t give out quests anymore

Oh man it's one of the wildest ones. A follower asks you to play a prank and it's harmless in the beginning. You feed them poop and then lock them up for a bit. I was laughing hard until he said "let's kill him! It will be hilarious" I sacrificed him instead. Then the character that I was asked to kill died as a missionary. It's fun, devolver makes some great games especially the darker paranormal ones that are surprisingly about mkultra and shit. You seem to be doing well anon. I'm proud of you. It took me almost 30 years to find peace. My theory is that in video games normal people can fill the roles they want to do but can't. We can make a difference and help others doing simple errands/fetch quests. In real life people have been led to believe everyone is dangerous or will take advantage of them. Most will but we crave that feeling of being a hero or a "good guy" even when we have been to rock bottom. I always thought when I got to rock bottom I would notice or something would happen and I would be pulled out by a friend. Instead they just pretend I don't exist anymore. I'm from an older generation where being mentally ill even having anxiety was seen as a weakness and contagious some how. My life is better now that I'm alone and don't have any of those people in my life. I also don't feel worthless because their influence is gone. We see ourselves as unwell but in reality the whole fricking shit show is unwell. Good people respond to it by putting up a fight and the rest go with the flow. Sometimes we don't understand what is going on but our higher brain is trying to tell us to get out of the way of these people they're not capable of feeling anything other than numb and we poison ourselves trying to be numb too and it creates guilt because we know better. I love you anon and I hope you maintain your peace.

I love devolved digital. Yeah I just got that mission in the game. I killed the guy who was asking me to sacrifice the other follower in my cult. Idk how they came up with this game but I hope they make a sequel or keep adding on it. Play their crow game it’s good. I think it’s called death crow.

Don’t use missionary in the cult of the lamb game. They usually just die. It’s better to find followers in the dungeons or buy them from the spider guy.

I used to play a lot of video games and I honestly do think most of them have the goal of making you indulge in some sort of psychopathic power fantasy, but I'm glad you learned something positive from it.

It’s one of those “I was in a power position at my work, but it was simply a token position, and I was just the work punching bag, so playing a game where I have control is new. I also like the farm mini game. I really should get into animal crossing

So video games work in that regard?
