I never really understood the hate for IX. The atmosphere feels very cartoon compared to VII and VIII, and the game felt like an obvious homage to the earlier entries in its simplicity, but I also feel that IX is undeniably also a sick fuckin' game, simple as.
It's just slow. SLOOOOOOOOOOOW. And the characters are not as conflicted as ff7 or 8 or even ff6 for that matter. Ff9 is like the perfect ending to psx ff. Goes back to basics while evolving the new aesthetics. One LOOOOOONG ASS FUCKING GAME to set off the psx final fantasies and make you never want to play another one again....

I do understand the criticism of it being long and slow, but as for the characters not being as conflicted I just can't agree when the little bro in picrel exists. Vivi is arguably one of the most loveable characters in fiction and his death is just the worst thing ever. And then you have the part where Alexandria is under attack and Eiko summons the Holy Judgment and dives off the airship. That part just wrecks me. I should have included IX in my OP tbh.
I understand where you are coming from but, both ff7/8 portage are amnesiatic messes that have to come to grips with reality and themselves before they can be the hero they need to be.

FF8 would've been interesting to see on the Dreamcast and Cube, the two 6th gens that really evoke that aesthetic.

That's a fine opinion. But ff7 is obv the superior game both in battle system, character, plot. Ff8 is better graphics, the goat mini game, goat sandbox mechanics.
Finished recently, great game in my opinion. Besides its flaws, once it clicks and you understand the plot, and more generally the game, coming full circle, it's nothing short of genius.
I think though that a lot of the more controversial things about this game are due people who never played the game parroting the opinions posted on the internet by other people who never played the game, kinda like how it happens with gaming journos, who we know don't actually play the games and the normies who don't play those games themselves form their opinions after those of the formers.
Because, really, I see a lot of complaints about the plot but it really doesn't get worse than your standard jrpg, so it's actually bizarre people single out this specific game for this kind of criticism.
