Why couldn't it keep relevance after the first two games? Was tekken too hard to beat?

VF2 is better than any tekken game to this day.
Sega concluded the 3D fighting genre there and then.
Ultimate Showdown wasn't that long ago
And it failed to gain traction. Though sega pushing it through that shitty ps plus deal did not help, and STILL locking it on that shit after several years.
It's like they treat this as "that game you can play in yakuza"
>And it failed to gain traction
Gee, I wonder why
>Just another port of an old fighting game instead of making a new VF game
>PS4 exclusive
>Digital release only
>Sega not bothering enough to push VF to competitive scene
Even if Sega supposedly introduced VF6 at TGS or the RGG Summit (which they won't), no one will care.
Its like a game with just the boring Tekken characters and boring moves, crap stages.
too boring. Only fgc tryhards like vf
Even tryhards don't play it. Just boomers making up stories about playing it in arcades as a kid.
It must be said, if you weren't gaming in the 90s your opinion of fighting games is irrelevant. You simply don't get anything about the era.
And you don't get that VF is dead for a reason
No, I do, but you don't get that you should be on /vg/ talking about whatever games are current
And you don't get that even with nostalgia goggles on VF was just mid
Virtua Fighter is the better fighting game but is boring and wasn't as appealing to casuals. Tekken is the more casual friendly fighting game but has anime stories and lightning effects on punches.
That's all it comes down to, zoomer.
VF is clunky and masher friendly, just a tech demo.
VF is the opposite of masher friendly have you even played it?
I've watched more than enough tournament footage to know that, yes, it is.
https://arch.b4k.co/vg/thread/420894091/#q420906141
https://arch.b4k.co/vg/thread/425588540/#q425718162
vf is not masher friendly, moron shitter
>ignoring these
>masher friendly
If you think that, you can't not think Tekken is twice as much. The entire philosophy behind Tekken's creation, from the creators themselves was "lets make VF but more easy for people to mash and cheaper"
Tryhard is a cope term for “people that are better than me because I suck”
Virtua Fighter is the more serious game appreciated for its gameplay, and not much else appealing about it. Tekken is easier for casuals, is flashier and more "anime", and has more striking characters
VF only really had a chance when fighting games were one of the more relevant genres of gaming, and has more of a chance in Japan where people take fighting games more seriously. Also there is just the fact that Tekken was a cheap game on the cheap console that everybody had, you now have a subset of people who grew up on Tekken but never played VF, so there isn't nearly as much nostalgia value in it for Americans
>Tekken is easier for casuals, is flashier and more "anime", and has more striking characters
Nah that would be DoA, VF had that shitty anime series but didnt helped a lot.
nothing, it was the first 3d fighter to come out, and then there was an avalanche of them, tekken was on psx and had a firm grip on the market, tekken tag innovated the genre one last time and won. The end.
The game has the personality of a toast sandwich.
it has no style or flair which is like 90% of the appeal of fighting games
it had it a bit in 5
Not enough to surpass Tekken
>after the first two games
3 and 4 were big. the 4th more than the 3rd.
These writeups explain it perfectly. The characters are forgettable archetypes, the marketing is non-existent, the arcade scene is dead and the online it atrocious.
So much depth in the later entries that tekken/soul caliber weenies wouldn't go near it. Normies won't even go near any fighters due to the skill barrier. So it died off. Sega makes more money off of gambling addicts in Japan and soulless sonic cash-ins.
>First games were released on consoles that sold poorly. On the long term, not enough people would feel nostalgic about the series.
>VF3 was eclipsed by games like Soul Calibur or DOA2.
>By the time the series was released on more popular consoles, other series were already very strong.
>VF feels a little dry in terms of personality. It has no plot outside of the manuals and the characters don't stand out. Tekken is more over the top and flashy, DOA plays similarly but has the sexy ladies and looks cooler, Guilty Gear has edgy characters and rock and metal music... Even if VF has good gameplay, a lot people also wants other things.
DoA had a sexy cute female lead that was THE actual main character and voiced by Baby voice Sakura Tange for the first 2 games and Tekken won the american market that VF with Akira failed to catch on.
You mean the generic kung fu man has a name???
>VF3 was eclipsed by games like Soul Calibur or DOA2
Also crappy, rushed port at Dreamcast
Why was it bad?
>>VF3 was eclipsed by games like Soul Calibur or DOA2.
VF3 was eclipsed by Tekken 3. Soul Calibur and DOA2 didn't exist yet.
I was talking about the Dreamcast ports.
VF3 was old by that time
>VF3 was old by that time
Virtua Fiighter 3 TB was released in 1997 and the Japanese Dreamcast game was released in 1998. The Dreamcast port was done by Genki, and not AM2. The Japanese version apparently had a lot of minor bugs and some issues making it less than arcade perfect. The Model 3 game has higher polygon models, higher resolution textures as well. The Dreamcast version has issues with character joints. The US/ NA version does fix bugs and issues from te japanese game, it is still a step down from the arcade game. It's not bad.
?t=137
But Soul Calibur was a better looking game on the Dreamcast and was also a NA launch game...
?t=838
There was also DOA2 for the Dreamcast, which came out in 1999. This was a really close port of the Sega Naomi arcade game. But still a small drop in quality. It's really close.
Neither Tekken 3 as it was released a year later, it actually competed directly with SoulEdge on the arcades.
On the home consoles it was released after SoulCalibur.
VF6/VF5 on PC will save the series... except no one will play that either
-vf3 had way too much competition
-vf4 was great but this is pre-online and post arcades so it stayed niche
-vf5 way mishandled, especially on console
-vf5 ps3 has no netplay
-vf5 360 netplay is great and has a lot of side content
-vf5r.....never came to consoles
-for vf you had to play on 360, but also accept we were never getting vf5r.
-vf5fs came to arcades
-everyone assumed vf5fs wasn't getting a console port too, and the old vf community moved on
-years later vf5fs comes to ps3/360 with decent netplay but is a barebones release with less content than arcade
-vf5fs has a bug in lobbies in that NO ONE can join a room if a match is going on, hurting the game's life (rip)
-years later vf5us comes to consoles. its a barebones port of vf5fs console but new 3d models/lighting
-for some reason, the option to invite friends to a room doesn't exist. this was patched in later.
-vf5us is an ok release later, but doesn't accurately show connections in ranked, nor shows if an opponent is on wireless
-covid happens and most fgc players move to pc because no locals and ease of play
-vf5us stays console exclusive
vf5us really needs a pc port. also there's new virtua fighter news soon at tgs.
might be a vf5us update, pc port or even just nft shit.
There's never going to be a VF5US PC port. Expect another wave of NFT shit at the most from VF these days, if anything.
>new virtua fighter news soon at tgs
Nowhere in Sega's program for TGS this year does it say anything about Virtua Fighter. I checked.
I know it'll be the same for this year's RGG Summit.
https://twitter.com/aokyseizy/status/1700515921612427383
this is all we have to go on
That doesn't mean anything
What a disaster of a company.
Couldn't guess why sega went bankrupt, no sir...
>vf4 was great but this is pre-online and post arcades
VF4 was online... in the arcades
got five numbered games in total, that is good enough, after that sega paired the characters on dead or alive 5.
It's 100% focused on gameplay with no lore for story gays to latch onto, so it never gains any traction with normies.
Virtua Fighther is literally just the tech demo of Tekken, even DoA had a bigger impact
VF4 had the biggest impact on post 90s fighting games being the first online play fighting game with ranks progression and customizing items. DoA biggest achievement is boobs physics.
>VF4 had the biggest impact on post 90s fighting games being the first online play fighting game with ranks progression and customizing items
Everyone says this yet no one remembers VF at all, let alone VF4
Arcades were dead in the US and PS2 home port didn't have online. VF4 online was very popular in Japan and influenced japanese developers of other franchises and this is all that matters.
It's funny how much other games took from VF4. Tekken 5 took the whole ranks progression and customization items. Also it took square areas with barriers from VF4 after a failed attempt at more open and uneven stages in Tekken 4 which they took from VF3. DoA3 took the movement and 3d snow effect. Both Tekken 5 and DoA3 took cool "breaking floor tiles" visual effect from VF4.
So popular that everyone believes Tekken and DOA were the ones that influenced because no one remembers VF
>everyone
In your bubble?
>VF is more popular in Japa--
Vf is the no fun series. I'm sure there's back story in the manual, but there's no hint of what motivates characters, what are doing fighting each other, what is dura. No intros or endings, plus there's no mini games, no smashing cars, no bowling. Vf is pretty much a mature fighting game for mature people such as myself and takes itself too seriously.
In short, it's a fricking barebones dollar store game series.
Nah, it's competitively much deeper than Tekken. Tekken is style over substance. Everything about Tekken is better and more interesting OTHER than the gameplay itself.
There's no substance without style.
Tekken is a basic ass footsie game until you catch you opponent in a juggle where your combo skills come into play. The combos look flashy and some of them might be really difficult to learn and execute so it all requires some skills indeed but those are just execution skills. VF characters have way more options and the depth comes not from combos execution which are not as elaborate as Tekken ones but from the mixups, movement and all other stuff that comes before you catch your opponent in a combo.
Please. VF is as deep as a puddle.
>dollar store game series
Tekken was literally created as a cheap PS1 based machine for the businesses that couldn't afford very expensive state of the art VF cabinets.
>More expensive means more good
Sure, grug.
VF was objectively better until Tekken 7
>VF was objectively better until Tekken 3
ftfy
>zoomie didn't play Tekken 4
Even DoA was considered better at the time
Tekken 4 is better than VF
I just watched a set of matches involved the "best Akira player in North America" and it was the most boring, repetitive, uninspiring game I've ever seen. It looked like a recent VF too. Tekken 3 surpasses all of VF. Maybe 4 or 5 at the latest if you're a sperg about balance.
>boring, repetitive, uninspiring game
What do you even mean? Not enough hit flashes?
Virtua Fighter is only boring and repetitive if you're shit at it. You have to know basics to even understand what you see when you watch others play, and playing yourself on a decent level is a completely different experience.
It's not like Tekken where even if you're a noob you mash buttons and something cool happens and mastering the game is just learning longer juggle strings and the ways to launch your opponent into one.
See
High level gameplay by the way
Are you good at VF?
Anyone is, so yes
Post your matches
No. Because no one actually plays Virtua Fighter.
So, you're shit at it
Have you forgotten the saying "You don't need to be a chef to tell if the food is shit"?
>proud of being a shitter
zoomers these days
Boomers like you only know how to argue in bad faith and put words in peoples mouths
Anyway, enjoy your clunky masher that not even Sega pretends to care about. The rest of us will be playing alive games like Tekken.
>argue in bad faith and put words in peoples mouths
So why do you call VF a masher then? It makes as much sense as calling Street Fighter a PG Mortal Kombat clone, i.e. totally opposite of correct. You're the one who argues in bad faith here.
Because I've watched enough tournaments to know they're all easily beaten by bots who spam the same combos
As I said, you watched the videos but only saw the combos and didn't see anything else which is really telling about your fighting game skills. It's not really VF related, your own words confirm that you are most likely shit at fighting games in general, be it Tekken, Street Fighter or anything else. You're a casual spectator impressed by flashiness, not a player.
I accept your concession, old man
Your failure to rebut is tacit concession
>virtua fighter
>masher
>tell me that you haven't played the game without telling me that you haven't played the game
I know that I shouldn't expect people to try a game and form their own opinion but at least they could watch some youtuber or whatever they watch and take some basic information from there before spouting bs.
>>tell me that you haven't played the game without telling me that you haven't played the game
LMAO NO ONE PLAYS VIRTUA FIGHTER
This is funny. Later VF games are well known for the fact of being deeper than Tekken games that even Tekken pros agree with and some people still try to be contrarians. Do they expect others to have as little knowledge as them? What is the end game here?
>What is the end game here?
First time on /vr/? Never seen a shipost?
Right, this board even has a resident 3rd strike hating homosexual who wants 3rd strike to be a failure retroactively
>Formula 1 racing is shit because they don't do cool drifts.
>MMA is shit because they don't do pro wrestling flips and table spots.
Modern Formula 1 is shit because you can't do fricking anything without being penalized.
No dude 90% of the damage in VF is from combo strings. You take ~30% of the bar with each string. Do that two or three times between some pokes and that's a round. I watched the fricking game you snob and you're full of it. The players fight exactly the same way they do in Tekken except they use even less moves. The fighters rarely do anything but basic punches and kicks. I saw a flip kick once with the ninja guy and that was the most variety the whole set.
Tekken is so much better and not because it has an occasional fireball or supernatural transformation. It would still be better than VF without those.
So, you watched the videos and all you saw was combo strings? Do you have even a basic understanding how VF system works compared to Tekken? Like you saw some moves in the video which looked "boring" but have you realized why these moves were used and why did they hit? Have you realized that there is a rock-paper-scissor game going on and how many options characters have and which mixups and mind games players use to succesfully land those "boring looking" combos? You seem to focus on the execution part and its apparent lack of flashiness, not on what precedes it. VF combos are quite simple execution wise like mash PPK or PPP and you get some basic ass combo. But you won't be able to land it at all if your opponent knows how to play VF. You have to outsmart him first.
VF is known to have boring character designs but people shitting on VF fighting system only expose themselves as scrubs. They are like Melee players shitting on Super Turbo.
Virtua Fighter did not invent ring outs
Virtua Fighter did not invent juggling
Virtua Fighter was not the first fighting game to play down projectiles
Virtua Fighter did not Invent 3D fighting games
Virtua Fighter was not the first 3D fighting game
Virtua Fighter was not even Sega's first 3D fighting game
Virtua Fighter was not Sega's first 3D game
Virtua Fighter was not Sega's flagship 3D game
Virtua Fighter did not influence the gaming industry
Virtua Fighter is not the reason Quake exists
Virtua Fighter was not the reason why consoles moved to 3D
Virtua Fighter is not technical, complex or deep
Stop trying to lie and spread misinformation you can and WILL be refuted!
3D fighting game from 1979
Juggles in a fighting game from 1991
3D fighting game that used polygons in 1991
>Virtua Fighter was not even Sega's first 3D fighting game
Their first fighting game to use polygons.
>Virtua Fighter was not Sega's first 3D game
The Model 1 arcade board is Sega's first polygon based board. Yoiu could say that Virtua racing was technically Sega's first 'real' polygon 3D game. Which also used the Model 1 arcade board. Everything else used scaling sprites based on older Yu Suzuki Super Scalier harder and its' derivatives.
>Virtua Fighter did not influence the gaming industry
It did influence Tekken directly and other 3D fighters from that time. The lead designer of Tekken was an AM2 employee before moving to Namco, who also worked on Virtua Fighter 1 directly. Seiichi Ishii worked on Virtua Fighter 1, tekken, Tobal no. 1 and Tobal no. 2, Street Fighter Ex, Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring and other 3D fighters. Not everything he made was a winner. But he contributed a lot to the 3D fighter sub genre.
>Virtua Fighter was not the reason why consoles moved to 3D
Ken Kutaragi said otherwise.
>Virtua Fighter was not Sega's flagship 3D game
I think Sega were trying to make it a flagship series. But I don't know if the original was meant to be a flagship game. I think the first Virtua Fighter was meant to be a launching point for a Virtua Fighter 2. The series really peaked with VF 2. VF3 was hyped as being a showcase for the Model 3 arcade board. But it was a game that was only ever ported to one console: The Dreamcast and never gained any traction outside of the arcades. VF2 is the best selling game on the Saturn overall, and was a pack-in game for most regions that replaced the original Virtua Fighter as the pack-in. VF2 had the most ports to non-Sega consoles. Shenmue was suppose to be a Virtua Fighter RPG series. Which was suppose to be Yu Suzuki's passion project. But it cost a lot and was never completed. Virtua Fighter 4 goes back to VF2's play style, mostly.
Ironically VF only got really fricking good with VF4 and VF5 when its time was already gone. Previous installments were groundbreaking and influental but more of tech demos than actually great games like Street Fighter games were. The same could be said about first two Tekken games which were shit but Tekken 3 was great so Tekken was the first one to become universally acclaimed despite being the second 3D fighter series.
Is that why no one touched 4 or 5?
What do you mean? How did you miss them? Was PS4 your first console?
No one remembers 4 except to say "fighting games need this bloated tutorial". People only vaguely remember 5 because it was a minigame in a Yakuza game.
>No one
>People
You generalize too much. What fighting games scenes do you consider yourself to be a part of?
Why do you annoying geezers always avoid the argument?
>VF isn't shit!!
>yes it is, here's proof
>THAT DOESN'T COUNT, FITE ME
Grow the frick up
What was your argument again?
I accept your concession
>makes a shitpost bait
>"why do you ignore my ARGUMENT"?
Nah, frick off
>Ironically VF only got really fricking good with VF4 and VF5 when its time was already gone. I am not going to debate that, because I feel like each sequel is better than the last. I don't think Sega were expecting the first Virtua Fighter to be their 'definitive' 3D fighter. I think they wanted the player feedback from VF to make a superior VF2. SFII was lightning in a bottle success for Capcom. It was a sequel to a game that was overshadowed by Final Fight; Street Fighter 1. Street Fighter 1 was ported to the TG16 as Fighting Street, and had a few crappy micro computer ports. Almost every arcade company tried to chase the SFII phenomenon. I think Sega were calculating that VF2 would give them a SFII tier success in the world of 3D fighter's , with refined gameplay, 60fps, better graphics, etc. I think Virtua Fighter 3 was suppose to be like a magma opus for the franchise with its 'holy hit!' for 1996 Model 3 board. But it's update Virtua Fighter 3 Team Battle came out on the DC in 1998 and 1999. A little late to get a port out. Tekken 3 sold so many copies because the PS1 sold so many units. Virtua Fighter IV: PS2 exclusive, which was interesting. They even sold it at tat $20.00 price point, which seemed insane.
>Virtua Fighter IV: PS2 exclusive, which was interesting. They even sold it at tat $20.00 price point, which seemed insane.
Virtua Fighter 4 scene was in the arcades. Unfortunately US arcades didn't have the infrastructure of Sega's own game centers to experience the ftg online play revolution that was happening in Japan. PS2 port was an afterthought really. IIRC is was the Evolution version that went straight under cheap Greatest Hits label. Regular VF4 was full price.
Arcades were dead when VF4 was a thing, so it therefore had no scene to speak of.
>Virtua Fighter 4 scene was in the arcades
it was a beast. more polygons per character than doa3. i wish they did xbox port instead of shitty ps2 version
lmao
>But I don't know if the original was meant to be a flagship game.
Nah the original was just Yu Suzuki trying to create a virtual fighting simulator in a next generation hardware. What he envisioned that a martial arts vydia would be like in VR played on arcade. Was more of a tech demo than anything else. Other concepts - like Virtua Racing and Virtua Cop - were created with the same idea.
Dead lr Alive 1 was unironically trash, cpu can kill you with 3 hits or kill you with one special grab instanstly, thw lethargic and Hang-uppy nature of 3D VF style fighting games was even more infamous here, fricking Kamen Rider ps1 and Toshinden 3 were the best of all the VF ps1 clones
DoA1 didnt even had damn character endings.
Why does everyone say the characters and story are forgettable? VF characters OOZE soul and charm! There's... uh...
>Generic kung fu man
>Generic blonde American clad in red
>Generic ninja
>Generic Chinese girl
>Tao Pai Pai
>Samus
Uh...
Sega ran out of money, they were no longer at the forefront of the tech race, fighting games became less popular, arcade games became less popular, Yu Suzuki left Sega.
NO YOU SEE, YOU ONLY SAW THE PRO PLAYERS GETTING COINFLIPPED BY BOTS! YOU NEVER SAW THE BIGGER PICTURE... OF THOSE SAME BOTS WINNING THOSE TOURNAMENTS
Generic looking characters, hard to get into, not button masher friendly unlike Tekken or Soul Calibur which can be played casually.
It was too deep and complex for Tekken scrubs
Thanks for the laugh, anon
>mash buttons in Tekken
>something cool happens
>mash buttons in Virtua Fighter
>you lose
Maybe it wasn't very fun from the casual standpoint?
Pros literally get coinflipped by button mashing bots.
I already accepted your concession. There's no need to double down.
>I already accepted your concession
Why do you keep answering then?
Why do you need the last word? Can't take another loss?
Good to know you enjoy dead reddit games
Yeah, go play some reddit tier Mortal Kombat 1, shitter
>Why do you need the last word?
Oh, the irony
Let's see if you get baited again
Everything went right. It still filters casual reddit shitters
Virtua Fighter is the most Reddit fighting game. Just like Darkstalkers and Turd Strike.
What a reddit shitter opinion lmao
So you really are that one schizo? Thanks for confiming that we may stop taking your VF opinion seriously
oh no it's moronic
This is why everyone treats VF shills like a joke
>everyone
You're the only one schizo here, the same one who seethes in 3rd Strike threads. Most fighting game players give due respect to VF and SF3 both even if they don't enjoy these games.
Reddit isn't "most fighting game players"
We know. Now go back to your reddit bubble, scrub.
the fricked up thing is that vf5 is really really good
I play with the one other guy that's willing to pay $80 for psn while everyone else plays fighters for free on pc
Everyone knows Tekken fans are the most annoying, they crossover with "late 90s nostalgia" gays who tend to be rap listening "yo dawgs" who think DBZ is the greatest anime and PS1 is the greatest console, if you catch my drift
Third Strike wasn't popular when it came out, but nice try zoomer who wasn't alive in the 90s
PS1 was better because it wasn't as expensive as whatever Sega shat out
Sega isn't very good at making fighting games. It's their one weakness. Namco does it better.
Sega is better at making racing games and fun simulator arcade games.
Are you moronic? Sega literally created 3D fighting games. Also Playstation was planned to focus at 2D games until they saw Virtua Fighter and decided to focus at 3D games instead.
And unlike Tekken where you can win by button smashing, Virtua Fighter actually needs skill.
Virtua Fighter was too thematically-dry and grounded to really catch-on in the West compared to outlandish fighters like Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, and indeed- Tekken. Doesn't help that VF2 was only on the Saturn which bombed in the West for unrelated reasons.
It was a good series that had a niche following in the US though.
Always fascinates me how this board and Ganker every single person is magically a top 100 player at every game and genre, and every single person they’re talking to is a bottom 100 zoomer. Fascinating very real and true dynamic that occurs 24/7.
no endings
Seriously, everybody and his mom loved playing fighting games to see cheesey FMV endings in late 90s.
Lack of style or character or content and value for home releases. Once other games caught up graphically it had nothing to offer the casual audience. They are great games in very boring packaging and despite what people claim great, complex gameplay alone doesn't sell.
