Almost every instance of sex scenes in otherwise serious and plot-focused stories is unnecessary, and they are only included in order to sell more copies to people who want to jack off. Before you respond like a peabrain and call me a prude, I don't care if a porn game has porn in it. Maggot Baits? Not an issue, it's about the porn. Saya no Uta? The porn is an integral part of the plot and shouldn't be removed. Kara no Shoujo? The porn is dogshit, it has no reason to be included except to pander to morons. It's almost like this isn't black and white and there are instances of good use of erotic elements in stories, but generally developers are just falling in line and doing the same shit as everyone else in order to keep existing. That's why everything is all-ages now. The market has shifted and become Steam-centric. As far as presentation goes, 13 Sentinels is by far the best. Combines Evangelion/western time travel movies almost too well. RTS Gameplay is actually fun and somewhat challenging. Characters are well written because half are adults or will be at one point. Music and visuals stand out compared to anything in the genre.

Did not read the thread. VNs are only games if they're interactive. Interactivity is what makes games. Books, comics, movies - they're all about a predetermined story, and you can't change the experience.
Games are about doing things for yourself. That is why everyone in the '90s and '00s wanted as much interactivity as possible. That's why people liked Duke Nukem 3D, even though it had outdated technology compared to full 3D Quake. Just because you could kick trash cans and piss in urinals in reasonably realistic city environments made it stand out. This is why GTA games were always popular, you have a living city that is interactive. In the '00s, every kid wanted a game they could "live in".
And then today's wienersuckers and brain-dead zoomers don't need all that. They're fine with non-games, with linear gameplay, with no interactivity, where "game designers" just make a path for you.
VNs aren't games. Unless they have a branching story that you can interact with.

I don't blame you for dropping that VN. It has horrible pacing. Higurashi has it's great moments, but you have to slog through so much boring bullshit to get to the good stuff.
This is why I enjoy Type-Moon VNs more than 07th Expansion VNs. Nasu knows how to better pace his stories than Ryu.
I never got board reading Tsukihime, while I had to take multiple breaks while reading Higurashi.

I still haven finished Umineko to this day due to all the fricking text bloat making that VN so fricking boring to read. Fate isn't perfect, but it kept me entertained enough to finish it.
