It should have come out concurrently with the PS4 instead of almost two years prior. The 3DS and Wii U launched much closer to one another.

The 3ds's success was not because it launched alongside the wii u.

They were trying to compete with the 3DS. They already trailed it by almost a year in the NA market. If they released it any later, it would have ended up even worse.

the vita itself is really cool, used it quite a bit, mostly as a psp emulator though.
sony really did fricking kill this thing mercilessly. it was set to fail no matter what.

It was made to be against emulator use as best they could. The original PSP sold more units than games total. It had a negative attachment rate because hacking it was piss easy. The Vita NOT being a handheld hack unit was the idea so people would buy games because that's where the money is. Unfortunately it had a pretty bad library if you weren't extremely weeb. I AM extremely weeb so I loved the party based dungeon crawls with fan service. It also has the most punishingly difficult game ever made on it Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God.

    Portables are not viable anymore
    >low-powered so easy to emulate (look at switch)
    >useless for online multiplayer (wi-fi sucks, tethering it kills portability)
    >constrained storage and media
    >has to work offline (always-online requirements kill portables)
it simply doesn't make economic sense to release one when you can an always-online DRM blackbox

        1. goytendo has no home console offering
        2. only portable on the scene so of course it will capture all sales
        3. switch piracy is massive
        4. losses due to emulation are massive
anyway, they'd make way more money from it if it were purely a home console (assuming they could curb piracy)

            >Piracy is not due to it being a handheld
It's not the direct cause, however handhelds suffer from several disadvantages that predispose them to piracy
            >weak hardware -> easier to emulate
            >can't be expected to be always hooked to the internet -> harder to implement server-side games and always-online DRM like Android does -> games can be pirated
            >limited storage -> reliance on external media -> can be easily dumped compared to internal storage
            >hard to

You mean mobiles? Yeah, not dedicated handheld though. Mobile shits all over the switch, even in japan

        Anonymous

There are literally no dedicated handhelds anymore and there probably will never be one again. Vita was the last one. The Switch is a hybrid, a weak home console that can be taken on the go, and the Steam Deck is a portable pc that doesn’t even have its own unique library. Mobile is of course something entirely different so don’t bother bringing it up. Handhelds, REAL handheld gaming, is dead

          Anonymous

NTA but Switch Lite is sort of close. I think I get where you're coming from though, you mean there's no more games made specifically for handhelds, right? So the market for standalone handhelds is dead, and even from Sony's perspective splitting up their games between a Vita 2 and the PS5 would be a dumb move when the PS5 is already struggling with exclusives.

Sony moved PS headquarters shortly after PS Vita and Bloodborne release.
Since then nothing worth of playing has been released.

Yes, too much of a coincidence. Sony died shortly after Bloodborne release.

This can be directly blamed on the Vita becoming an ecchi machine.
Sony California genuinely believed it was making the brand get viewed as a pedo brand and fought to take control away from Japan to stop it.

one of sony's biggest flaws is they abandon projects far too quickly, the Vita was stillborn and was kept alive by 3rd parties mostly via japan.

the playstation 3D display was a nice idea but they dropped it so fast it never even received drivers for PC when it was advertised as a way to use it, also has a fricked EDID.

second biggest issue they have is build quality, going back decades none of their shit lasts, even the original PS1 had issues with the laser rails for the cd drive, and even with their modern hardware like the PS5 controllers are prone to stick drift.

Shame Sony's western division murdered it.

I thought it was because they saw how much money FGO was making and thought that was both sustainable and repeatable so they had Aniplex churn out a bunch of mobile trash like Kirara Fantasy, Magia Record, and Twisted Wonderland instead of supporting the Vita. Sony sort of read the market correctly where mobile is now very dominant but also completely misread it as shown by the success of the Switch. There was room for mobile and handhelds, especially in Japan.

        Anonymous

FGO only makes bank because of gachashit, which is online-only by excellence. Unfortunately, portables, by their nature are incompatible with the latter.
The only way to make gachashit work on portables would be to add a cellular module and make them double as phones.

It was alive for 7 years before support stopped. They gave it more than it deserved long after it fialed. The Vitas failure is also why Sony corporate gave the reigns to the west in the first place because the nip execs kept fricking up while the western half kept making money. You're a weeb so I imagine you'll ignore this regardless

Yes, except for those damn memory cards. Bless the SD2Vita.
I still can't understand the reason for PS Portal's existence, it's useless just like the Wii U pad without the console, whereas the Vita let you remote play ANY PS4 game while also being its own gaming system.
