        Jet Set Willy.
The objective literally was to collect every flashing turd in the world. They were also placed in silly obscure spots around the map necessitating you to explore, in the true collectathon sense.

Maybe it's a thing with British developers. Jet Set Willy was probably the first collectathon

    I'm not sure about that.
Whilst there's multiple treasures you can collect, as well as the individual coins, their only purpose is to raise your score that decides your ending and the satisfaction of collecting them. You can actually go the whole game without picking up any of the treasures, and only collecting enough coins to open the level exits.

What usually defines a collectathon is their required collection to progress the game. Super Mario 64 has a basic enough system of collecting the Power Stars, which most of the time are just an end goal but sometimes a reward for collecting 8 red coins or 100 coins overall.
The only other collectible is two keys from two boss levels.

Games like Banjo Kazooie got a lot more elaborate with its collectibles.
You have notes which unlocked note doors around Gruntilda's lair, then you had Jiggies that unlock new stages to explore.
You had Mumbo tokens needed to access transformations in many stages, and an assortment of ammo in the forms of eggs and feathers.
Each stage had two hollow honeycombs to collect, which when six were collected would upgrade your maximum health.
There were also stage-dependent collectibles you needed to collect for a Jiggy reward, something like presents to give to the polar bear kids in Freezeezy Peak, or two piles of gold bars to give back to the blubbering hippo in Treasure Trove Cove.

There was also the famous secret collectibles like the ice key and the six ?-eggs, which at launch served an unknown purpose that would never come to fruition on the original N64 hardware due to limitations.

One of the defining things about a collectathon is the flexibility in just how much you need to collect in order to progress the game. It empowers the player to push ahead with the main goal of simply beating the game, whether that's to do is as quickly as possible or to skip the parts they find too hard, frustrating, boring, etc.
Alternatively, it gives them a lot to enjoy doing by aiming for 100%.

Same shit for Yoshi's island: Super Mario World 2.

It's just marketing because the games are so radically different from mainline Mario.

A lot of the going out of your way collecting in Wario Land is simply for bonus points and is more akin to secret hunting than anything. Finding enough coins to activate checkpoints and goal doors is typically achieved through just normal gameplay with a slight emphasis on grabbing coins.
Collectathon generally implies a large amount of collectibles which have to be collected in order to proceed through the normal stages of the game, and the act of collecting often involving a direct effort to run around the stage to find enough of the collectibles to proceed. It can turn the fun of exploration and finding secrets into something that feels like a chore.

Why is SM64 considered a collectathon? The only collectathon aspect of it is the coin missions
