Same reason they always did: if you're not into PC gaming, it's just what you need to buy to play "normal" games. As dire as that chart is, it's much, much worse for Xbox.
And as of their most recent quarter, it's behind the PS4 launch aligned again, so at best it's just the same number of people buying as did the last time around. And at worst, it'll continue to fall behind and it's actually LESS than the last time around. With Xbox similarly not keeping up with even their disastrous last Gen, apparently, it's not unreasonable to suppose there's simply less people all around willing to get into "traditional" console gaming that the PS1 helped define.

Gameboy generations tend to go wacky, mainly due to a failure. Last time it was virtualboy with the late color refresh to save face before gba. DS was originally a third platform because they weren’t sure it would take off and didn’t want to have to reverse course to gba again like with the color. Nintendo consoles were what set up the 5 year cycle, them dropping out of that space explains why they let the Switch get too old. Plus mobile chips are harder to come by with more demand and pandemic still slowing Taiwan down. A “new” switch was probably due last year but wouldn’t have been cost effective.

I had a decent time with GoW Ragnarok. Interested in Demon's Souls, Returnal, Alan Wake 2, and Stellar Blade. Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West were severe disappointments, even as a fan of their predecessors. PS5 really does not feel like a worthwhile investment for the price and inconvenience of getting one.
What is even the point of a new console generation now? Graphics haven't advanced to the point where they're going to look revolutionary, DLSS, framegeneration and all the "new" slop is already in current gen consoles and no one owns an 8k TV yet.
I'd like a "Pro" console to be out because FF7Rebirth is really fricking struggling on PS5. Unfortunately the timed exclusivity will be up by the time any Pro launches and I'll play it on PC but I'm sure there will be similar games I don't feel inclined to wait up to 2 years to play
My guess it is to retain relevancy in the market. Sony making new consoles and selling them is mostly a scheme to show investors that they have X units sold to show that they have a foothold to retain confidence.
Microsoft does this as well, but they have their presence in so many different industries that the strategy is actually more viable due to their immensity. Especially in North America.

But "flavour of the month" is, by definition, what everyone plays at the moment. Saying that everyone will just play the current flavour of the month so the console is bad is a fricking tautology.
Mostly because the Xbox is a dead brand in all of Europe and Japan. Sony's also getting more sales in other countries that Xbox is similarly behind in. The only market Xbox is even in spitting distance of the Playstation is the US and I'm not sure it's as close as it used to be there either. It's less unpopular in Canada and Mexico, and the UK, than in the rest of Europe, the Americas, and Asia, but those are still markets its really not that competitive in.
Sony is a world wide hardware company, with extensive branches of bureaucracy and distribution throughout the world. It was much, much easier for them to muscle into the industry because of that existing infrastructure than it was for Microsoft, despite always being a bigger company with more money. Money can't simply buy a global hardware distribution and marketing network. It can help grow it, but clearly Microsoft, still primarily a software company, was unwilling to do the footwork around that. Which is why their biggest recent "success" in gaming is just a different kind of software distribution service. ie. what they're already doing with all their other non-gaming software.
Microsoft did really well with the 360 over here but the RROD problem into the always online you cant share disks drama with the xbox one killed it. Gamepass was doing well for a while and gaining serious momentum, but they needed the big releases going for another 5 years or more and they would have got that foothold back, but the lack of AAA killed it again.
I think this is why sony reacted so badly to the Activision/COD/Microsoft thing because COD will sell 10 milllion sony consoles a generation here easy because thats one of the 5 titles all the normies play with friends at weekend/evenings and playstation is where everybodies friends are, they simply wont switch to xbox because of installed userbase.

Every game Sony releases to good reviews and WOM is another, uh, halo effect for their entire console line. People begin feeling like Playstation has these good games that aren't elsewhere in addition to the actual shit they're going to be buying it for. It's why they bother to get marketing right and even timed, or full though it's much rarer nowadays, exclusivity for third party games: so that when these, hopefully good and not multiple Foamstar-tier releases, games get read, seen, and heard about, Playstation's there in the same conversation. Games people want and Playstation become synonymous, even if their actual first party isn't the first choice, or even second or third choice, for the actual console player.

Slightly better textures, slightly better fur, and slightly better shadows on PS5 vs a PS4 Pro, i knew everything was either going to be backported to PS4 or Ported to PS5 so the difference on 90% of games was going to be minimal. Have not even looked at the difference on games i just aquired like infinite wealth, and the persona 3 remaster, i bet its minimal. Personally if i had a PS5 right now id sell it once id finished the exclusives and buy a 9.0 firmware PS4 Pro and just sail the high seas.

Japanese "AAA" games still have smaller budgets than even obscure AAA games from western devs. Eastern-Eurojank AA games have a much smaller budget still and they're always profitable, because they also don't spend on marketing that much.
Best example being Metal Gear Solid V with $80 million budget.

Most of the budget is labor so unless the teams are small and the scope of the game is small enough to complete in 3 or 4 years they'll run into the same budget problems. ps4 and ps5 have blended together in my head into the same thing, there's nothing I want on either of them. It's sad how enormous and exciting of a change the PS2 was to the PS1, and then the PS3 to the PS2. The PS4 was just like the PS3 running at it's best, and the PS5 is just the PS4 again, there's no meaningful difference in what's possible. What I mean is, you could NOT have ran Kingdom Hearts II on the PS1 in any fashion, it would not have been possible. You could NOT have ran Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS2, not a chance in hell. I don't think The Last Of Us Part II could have ran in a satisfactory way on the PS3, I don't think setting it to 30 FPS and lowering the graphics across the board would have helped, but I could be wrong. However, doing these same things to PS5 games, I'm sure you could get fricking any of them to run comfortably on the PS4. I don't see what leap the PS6 can possibly have from the PS5. People will just have to buy it if they really want to play the games that now must be made for the PS6 even though they could easily be on the PS5, maybe even the PS4.
The issue is the plethora of the same games readily available. The open world limitation has been solved and all we're now getting an ever increasing pool of the same genre. This isn't so much an issue with the quality of the games, this is what you call a maturing product, like how the iPhone hasn't got anywhere else to go other than better battery life, better resolution, better camera. No one wants it because they already have it.
It's crazy how console manufacturers lost the edge they had on technology advancement to sell you a new platform.
Back in the day you obviously needed the next platform because all games looked so much better. Nowadays they look the same, and they even also release on previous gen platforms, so there's even less incentive to get them.

PS5 has SSD, PS4 doesn't so games have to be made around slow reading speeds. My NVMe reads and writes at 7GB/s. If this were a standard, it would allow for more creative and interesting levels but everything has to have the same hidden loading screens for as long as games will be developed for PS4.

So yes, the actual model of Joel or Kratos looks basically the same between the PS4 and PS5 version of TLOU2 or GoW, but everything else in the environment looks magnitudes better on PS5.

Steam Decks and Switch's work because it is a novelty. If all brands started making one, they would stop selling instantly. Consoles are selling less, because PCs have become more streamlined with "gaming laptops" and even low-budget PCs are able to play pretty much everything.

You know, the other day I realized that graphics barely impact my enjoyment of a game, remakes that are the exact same but with better graphics don't make me have a better time with the game at all, after a couple of minutes you completely forget about the graphics and just feel the core of the game.

Baldur's Gate 3 started small, then got bigger, and then got even biggerer as the final release crept closer and the good world of mouth started to trickle out. And they really started to up the PR machines and had memetic presentations like the bear fricking. There was a steady ramp up to a complete (mostly) experience which is where its true success happened.
Palworld exploded out of nowhere, but it's already shot its biggest wad: being Pokemon with guns. There's nowhere for it to go but a more polished and expanded version of that, which just isn't going to get anywhere near the draw it already had and used up. Literally nothing they could, even making it a perfect game, is ever going to get it the kind of sales simply being "janky EA game where the Pokemon get shot" already got it. Anyone who wasn't down with that isn't going to show up now in any significant numbers and the people who already tried it and had fun aren't coming back because, again, it was only about it being Pokemon with guns and they've gotten that already.
To be clear they could do absolutely nothing and still be one of the most successful indies of all time. But it's hard to see it actually growing again in a way that's at all comparable to where it's already been, sales-wise. It's just like a more bizarre version of the Yokai Watch, except it came and went so quickly there's not even going to be a real conversation about how Pokemon needs to respond.

People always talk about exclusives, but honestly even if there were enough good multiplats I think the ps5 would be selling more. But there aren't, most things coming out are shit regardless of if they're exclusive or not. What matters most is what games your system can play, not what games are exclusive to that system. If nintendo did PC releases of their games I think the switch would still sell almost as well as it does now, just by virtue of it's price and the games it has.

I got the PS5 in November and I have not touched it since Astro's Playroom. I have been trying to think of genuine "Next gen" (that sounds so stupid) games made for PS5 that could not run on a PS4, but it's hard to name a lot of titles.
Sure, I can use the PS5 to play PS4 games that forced me to choose between resolution and framerate without having to sacrifice one or the other (FF XV, Ratchet & Clank, Horizon Zero Dawn), but... they are still PS4 games.

Games during the current era that push the hardware take so long to go from concept to release that they, sometimes quite literally like with CP2077, burn through an entire console generation while in dev.

Gameboy generations tend to go wacky, mainly due to a failure. Last time it was virtualboy with the late color refresh to save face before gba. DS was originally a third platform because they weren’t sure it would take off and didn’t want to have to reverse course to gba again like with the color. Nintendo consoles were what set up the 5 year cycle, them dropping out of that space explains why they let the Switch get too old. Plus mobile chips are harder to come by with more demand and pandemic still slowing Taiwan down. A “new” switch was probably due last year but wouldn’t have been cost effective.

I had a decent time with GoW Ragnarok. Interested in Demon's Souls, Returnal, Alan Wake 2, and Stellar Blade. Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West were severe disappointments, even as a fan of their predecessors. PS5 really does not feel like a worthwhile investment for the price and inconvenience of getting one.

Mostly because the Xbox is a dead brand in all of Europe and Japan. Sony's also getting more sales in other countries that Xbox is similarly behind in. The only market Xbox is even in spitting distance of the Playstation is the US and I'm not sure it's as close as it used to be there either. It's less unpopular in Canada and Mexico, and the UK, than in the rest of Europe, the Americas, and Asia, but those are still markets its really not that competitive in.
Sony is a world wide hardware company, with extensive branches of bureaucracy and distribution throughout the world. It was much, much easier for them to muscle into the industry because of that existing infrastructure than it was for Microsoft, despite always being a bigger company with more money. Money can't simply buy a global hardware distribution and marketing network. It can help grow it, but clearly Microsoft, still primarily a software company, was unwilling to do the footwork around that. Which is why their biggest recent "success" in gaming is just a different kind of software distribution service. ie. what they're already doing with all their other non-gaming software.

Microsoft did really well with the 360 over here but the RROD problem into the always online you cant share disks drama with the xbox one killed it. Gamepass was doing well for a while and gaining serious momentum, but they needed the big releases going for another 5 years or more and they would have got that foothold back, but the lack of AAA killed it again.
I think this is why sony reacted so badly to the Activision/COD/Microsoft thing because COD will sell 10 milllion sony consoles a generation here easy because thats one of the 5 titles all the normies play with friends at weekend/evenings and playstation is where everybodies friends are, they simply wont switch to xbox because of installed userbase.

It's why they bother to get marketing right and even timed, or full though it's much rarer nowadays, exclusivity for third party games: so that when these, hopefully good and not multiple Foamstar-tier releases, games get read, seen, and heard about, Playstation's there in the same conversation. Games people want and Playstation become synonymous, even if their actual first party isn't the first choice, or even second or third choice, for the actual console player.
Also there's Nintendo but we don't talk about them because it makes everything complicated so we just pretend everything about their business is an aberration, even to itself.

Have not even looked at the difference on games i just aquired like infinite wealth, and the persona 3 remaster, i bet its minimal. Personally if i had a PS5 right now id sell it once id finished the exclusives and buy a 9.0 firmware PS4 Pro and just sail the high seas.

Japanese "AAA" games still have smaller budgets than even obscure AAA games from western devs. Eastern-Eurojank AA games have a much smaller budget still and they're always profitable, because they also don't spend on marketing that much.
Best example being Metal Gear Solid V with $80 million budget.

Most of the budget is labor so unless the teams are small and the scope of the game is small enough to complete in 3 or 4 years they'll run into the same budget problems. ps4 and ps5 have blended together in my head into the same thing, there's nothing I want on either of them. It's sad how enormous and exciting of a change the PS2 was to the PS1, and then the PS3 to the PS2. The PS4 was just like the PS3 running at it's best, and the PS5 is just the PS4 again, there's no meaningful difference in what's possible. What I mean is, you could NOT have ran Kingdom Hearts II on the PS1 in any fashion, it would not have been possible. You could NOT have ran Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS2, not a chance in hell. I don't think The Last Of Us Part II could have ran in a satisfactory way on the PS3, I don't think setting it to 30 FPS and lowering the graphics across the board would have helped, but I could be wrong. However, doing these same things to PS5 games, I'm sure you could get fricking any of them to run comfortably on the PS4. I don't see what leap the PS6 can possibly have from the PS5. People will just have to buy it if they really want to play the games that now must be made for the PS6 even though they could easily be on the PS5, maybe even the PS4.
The issue is the plethora of the same games readily available. The open world limitation has been solved and all we're now getting an ever increasing pool of the same genre. This isn't so much an issue with the quality of the games, this is what you call a maturing product, like how the iPhone hasn't got anywhere else to go other than better battery life, better resolution, better camera. No one wants it because they already have it.

PS5 has SSD, PS4 doesn't so games have to be made around slow reading speeds. My NVMe reads and writes at 7GB/s. If this were a standard, it would allow for more creative and interesting levels but everything has to have the same hidden loading screens for as long as games will be developed for PS4.

The difference between the PS4 and PS5 is massive, but it's most noticable when it comes to lighting and atmosphere and fog and reflections and all that ray tracing / path tracing shit that you don't immediately notice unless you're looking at a comparison.
Facial animation this gen is also miles ahead of what it was during last gen. Game physics too.
So yes, the actual model of Joel or Kratos looks basically the same between the PS4 and PS5 version of TLOU2 or GoW, but everything else in the environment looks magnitudes better on PS5.

You know, the other day I realized that graphics barely impact my enjoyment of a game, remakes that are the exact same but with better graphics don't make me have a better time with the game at all, after a couple of minutes you completely forget about the graphics and just feel the core of the game.
We don't fricking need these gigantic budget games with real life graphics, they don't add anything, and it's the reason why we have so few games and all of them have to be safe shit put together by suits to maximize profit. Look at Parasite Eve, a game like that could never exist now from a studio like SE unless they stop fricking putting gigantic budgets on everything.

Baldur's Gate 3 started small, then got bigger, and then got even biggerer as the final release crept closer and the good world of mouth started to trickle out. And they really started to up the PR machines and had memetic presentations like the bear fricking. There was a steady ramp up to a complete (mostly) experience which is where its true success happened.
Palworld exploded out of nowhere, but it's already shot its biggest wad: being Pokemon with guns. There's nowhere for it to go but a more polished and expanded version of that, which just isn't going to get anywhere near the draw it already had and used up. Literally nothing they could, even making it a perfect game, is ever going to get it the kind of sales simply being "janky EA game where the Pokemon get shot" already got it. Anyone who wasn't down with that isn't going to show up now in any significant numbers and the people who already tried it and had fun aren't coming back because, again, it was only about it being Pokemon with guns and they've gotten that already.
To be clear they could do absolutely nothing and still be one of the most successful indies of all time. But it's hard to see it actually growing again in a way that's at all comparable to where it's already been, sales-wise. It's just like a more bizarre version of the Yokai Watch, except it came and went so quickly there's not even going to be a real conversation about how Pokemon needs to respond.

People always talk about exclusives, but honestly even if there were enough good multiplats I think the ps5 would be selling more. But there aren't, most things coming out are shit regardless of if they're exclusive or not. What matters most is what games your system can play, not what games are exclusive to that system. If nintendo did PC releases of their games I think the switch would still sell almost as well as it does now, just by virtue of it's price and the games it has.

Cutting down on releasing big games may make sense. The PS5 userbase increased a lot in 2023 and may keep like that in 2024, so all those new users should have enough with the existing catalogue, plus... why invest in new games when you can make easy money porting old titles to PC?

I got the PS5 in November and I have not touched it since Astro's Playroom. I have been trying to think of genuine "Next gen" (that sounds so stupid) games made for PS5 that could not run on a PS4, but it's hard to name a lot of titles.
Sure, I can use the PS5 to play PS4 games that forced me to choose between resolution and framerate without having to sacrifice one or the other (FF XV, Ratchet & Clank, Horizon Zero Dawn), but... they are still PS4 games.

That's because games during the PS1 era that pushed the hardware took 2-3 years to go from concept to release. Games during the current era that push the hardware take so long to go from concept to release that they, sometimes quite literally like with CP2077, burn through an entire console generation while in dev.
