Wanna play Falcom games? Play Ys. Don't touch Kiseki

If you really really want to try Kiseki/Trails, do so with this warning in mind. Let me tell you why

Falcom is the wienerroach of the games industry. Its objective is simple: survive no matter what. Falcom as a game developer can probably survive a nuclear war. They simply do not give a shit. They'll copy what's trendy, they'll jump on anything that's popular and they will go through hoops to make sure their shit sells and they can stay afloat.

The problem is investing your time into a series from a company that will ditch any story line or any fanbase if what they held on for dear life is no longer popular.

Look how fast things changed from one arc to the next, the technological progressions and the trends they latch on. You may like it now, but eventually they'll latch on to shit you hate if it sells.

It's why it's not really worth getting invested in the games long term. Play them if you want, but heed this warning. Much like a wienerroach, falcom has no commitment to you, not even to kiseki or its plot lines above its commitment to survival.
It's amazing they haven't made an isekai arc for the series yet, but give it time and they'll eventually latch on to it.

You know, pondering how Cold Steel didn't commit to the 2 sooper fartbreaking character deaths made non-commitment pretty equivalent with falcoom to me. I figure that's true for the series as whole probably, idk.
I'm in the last chapter of Sky FC and have no interest. I tried Ao and couldn't get past hours of exposition dialogue. Frick Kiseki.

Thats funny, I'm playing Reverie and I just got to the finale part where a laser vaporized a whole fortress and Aurelia just said no one died. Her excuse is that the soldiers are somewhere during that time.

Yeah, it's funny how Cold Steel and from hearing that at least partially Reverie try to be a grim war story but at the same time not

Its like their guns can't kill people. Last time I have seens some gritty scenario in Trails is from Crossbell arc where the Red Constellations goes killing bunch of soldiers, blood included.

Crossbell is when they started doing the "nobody important is allowed to die" thing, even to the point of retconning previous deaths (Luciola)

    well, actually, do scratch that

The whole 3rd chapter of the trails series was an isekai plot, if you think about it
enjoyable as it was, the point still stands.

what kind of person wants to play falcom games specifically and needs to decide between ys and kiseki
I feel like it makes a lot more sense for someone to play ys because it looks cool, and only starts caring about the developer after playing

Despite my gripes with the recent Trails games, I still enjoy the series. I find the characters to be pleasant. I like the early modern fantasy setting with alt Prussia and nobles wearing trenchcoats and cravats and a cold war going on with some airships and mechas. I like the anime aesthetic of swordsmen. The character models and lighting is nice to look at. I like the melodic music. I like the series' focus on local geopolitical conflicts. I like the turn based combat and character building. And there are exciting, hype moments every now and then (see pictured). There isn't much else coming out on the market that appeals to me. WoW, GW2, and FFXIV are just as flawed as Trails if not more so, and besides that there is just the odd occasional one time release like Monochrome Mobius, Granblue Fantasy Relink, or the upcoming Eiyuden Chronicle, so it's either play this or nothing at all for me.

      >focused on entertaining people and collecting money from it instead of trying to control the world with boondoggles of ESG crap
Based, why am I supposed to not like them exactly? I see everything else jumping on the actual "trendy wienerroach" endeavors which is progwashing, woke, ESG, whatever you want to call it in which you stop pretending it isn't happening.

I mean look at these mechs, this color scheme, no one is even doing this shit anymore. That looks awesome. I don't even know wtf is going on with this series but it makes me want to play it. I don't even care if it's shallow as hell and those are just a phoned in background prop, at least it doesn't have the usual poisonous baggage we can find literally everywhere else.
      >divine knight
"OMG religion and patriarchy has to go", said some blue and pink wearing homosexual, excuse me, ace androgynous pansexual up and comer in a silicon valley board room somewhere. That is what is actually "trendy" now to market to zoomers.
Maybe you weebs think you're immune to that societal decay or something but they're chafing at the bit to get in there, shopping their employment angles through shitty translation nepotist groups etc.
      >u sound mad boomer/ur brain on /misc/LLLL/ huehuehue
You're goddamn right I'm mad, I'm acutely aware of what we've all lost.

        Japan doesn't have ESG investing.
At least, not yet. They're inviting blackrock into the country and maybe you'll eventually see it.

          >Japan doesn't have ESG investing
They don't, but certain companies have shown they will bend the knee to sell more copies in the west, which is a bad thing.

Sometimes its funny and can be cool though, like Palworld having guns and shooting mechanics to appeal to westerners, because - to quote the developer - "they (westerners) like to shoot stuff, right? lol"

Xenoblade does it a million times better while actually having a compelling plot and characters. Xenogears/saga also has le mechs but they are slogs to play unfortunately

Xenotrannies are just mad that our mech combat was better. If you think it's cool, then you're in for a treat because it's in 4 of the 5 cold steel games. And if you like Tokusatsu, you'll love kuro no kiseki and its sequel, where you play as a JRPG flavored Kamen Rider Spike Spiegel.
Kiseki is sloppa but it is high tier, tasty, fun sloppa that I think is unironically good. The only people who don't like it are envious, assblasted pseuds who are mad that it's better liked than their pseudo-intellectual anno/modern kojima tier JRPG's.
The overarching plot of the cold steel saga can be loosely described as code geass mixed with masoukishin: lord of elemental and highlander. The first game only has mech combat at the very end, but its a staple feature of the next four games after it. Mech combat as a mechanic is changed out in the most recent two games to release, the kuro no kiseki games, for a cool transforming hero ability you get from your fairy dicky companion, themed after classical fairy tails - in the MC's case, Grendel.

the english localization did in fact change a lot of the terminology for the worse like that
        "divine knight" = deus excellion
rivalry of seven = excellion krieg
        just as some examples.

Ys is overrated fricking garbage too though. It has absolutely 0 depth to any of its combat, no real customization, shit level design and the most generic stock jrpg plots and characters ever made. They aren't even RPGs they're just bad action games for babies.

Except you shouldn't be playing any Ys game after Origin (release order wise) either, that series went to complete shit as well. That's fine though because even just 1+2 and the Napishtim engine games are fricking great and it's not like Ys has any important continuity or conclusions in the later games like Kiseki.

It doesn't matter if you like or play Ys games, they're all individual games and you can only play origin and never play any game again.

But trails/kiseki is a long running series that heavily rely on entries of the franchises as they follow up into the next, the level of investment required is much higher. If you liked origins, and the series went on a direction you didn't like you didn't waste 8-10 games worth of time just for the devs go to an entirely different direction and leave you hanging.
Why are you temperature IQ tards replying to this thread and missing the point like this? Frick off.

I agree with what you’re saying about falcom being a wienerroach and only their older ys games really being worth playing. But ys isn’t an rpg it’s an action game with fantasy elements like zelda. Also what about the legend of heroes games that predated trails? Are they any good?

Other way around. Ys is just a button-masher where you spam flash guard to win. It requires only slightly more brainpower than FFXV. There's also almost no thought put into the story, characters or setting to make up for it. They should have stopped making Ys years ago and kept making better games like Zwei or Gurumin to supplement Kiseki instead.

I am convinced trails fans are mindbroken. Some guy has convinced himself ITT that his only other options for games are trails or shitty MMOS. How do you even come to the conclusion that Trails is the only JRPG in existence?

Most true statement ever made. I know someone who's only played the first Kiseki and only a LITTLE bit of the second who still acts like it's an untouchable series. Such weird fricking behavior that I don't see from other things on *this* level.

Hey at least Neptunia is cute, Kiseki is just the most generic, bargain-basement trope-fest that games like DDLC intentionally poke fun at. Even Fire Emblem for all the shit it gets has a little more depth and originality compared to this slop.

        >generic, bargain-basement trope-fest
No, that's Neptune. Kiseki at least has interesting characters and worldbuilding, even if it does kinda go to shit with Sen (arguably starting all the way back in Sora 3rd).

Don't do this, play PC-88 Sorcerian with all the expansions. Become the Diamond formation and intimidate your enemies as you diamond your way towards them slowly. Ys is for homos and Kiseki is for ultrahomos.
