You really don't, you just have to play all the games. Which is the hard part, because for a long time they were spread across a bunch of different systems and all of the ones not on a PS2 were shit so the people who just went 1-2-3 missed over half the series and had no idea what was going on.

I'm sure if you just buy and play the switch games they announced you'll have a pretty good grasp of the games themes and plot, the only real convolution is if you dunk your head in the deep end and I think people complain about the confusing release titles.
Just focus on whats important and if you like it enough you can work from there.
Also damn Sora got some big breasts nice.

Hahahahaha, who the frick would buy a switch when all the games are on PS4?

It's really not that bad, it's convoluted for sure and there's plenty of dumb shit but you're not going to have any trouble with the basic plot. The biggest hurdle that led to this issue originally was all the canon games being spread out across every handheld available until the HD collections came out, but now that you can play them all on a single system it's not really an issue anymore.

When people say you need a degree to understand the plot, it's just a long-standing joke ever since KH2's plot.

In reality, as long as you play through each important entry without skipping cutscenes, everything will mostly make sense as you go through it straight to the end.

It's just the numbering of the games and their placement in the timeline that can be jarring. Birth By Sleep is essentially KH0, but because it was made after 2 there's stuff in it that could potentially spoil that so it's recommended to play it after the "trilogy" of 1, CoM and 2.

Then after BBS/0 you play/watch 358 Days and Re Coded. Then you digest the 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, then 3.

There's stuff and mobile games that go into stuff that long predates even BBS but that doesn't have bearing on the main storyline of the 1-3 saga, it's moreso setting up for 4 and beyond.

just play the first and second one if you want more, you honestly aren't missing much if you just forget the rest exists

CoM is pretty important, but because of the way it ends it's the kind of game you could skip and not miss too much, yeah. 358/2 Days and Coded are fairly easy skips as well. If one just plays 1, 2, BBS, DDD then 3 that's the bulk of it.

You can watch YT videos that explain everything really, and even then the original KH is pretty self contained. It's only after Chain of Memories shit gets convoluted

The plot isn't really that complicated. You just have to play the games and pay attention to the cutscenes. That used to be a pain in the ass because the games were spread out across PS2, GBA, DS, 3DS, and PSP. Nowadays you can buy an all in one package on PS4 with everything you need.

      >Just play everything on PS4
This. Though IIRC they're available on Xbox and PC nowadays... oh and coming to Switch via Cloud. I guess it's better than nothing.

The GBA version of Chain Of Memories and the DS versions of 358/2 Days and Re Coded are also all fairly easy to emulate especially if in the case of the DS games you actually want to play them for some reason.

Just shut up and play, it's fun, you'll understand the dumbass plot at some point

It's really high concept, but once you understand how the setting works it's completely understandable. People overstate how complicated the story is.

That said, the story of this series is bonkers and is absolutely worth checking out for the "how the frick does this exist" factor

Kingdom Hearts is completely coherent up until DDD. And after that’s it’s still not that hard to follow

Play 1 and 2 only. Play the original PS2 versions first then the Final Mixes. Then you'll realize the originals were better.

Uhh, no. Recommending people play PS2 games in 2021 strikes me as very ill-conceived.

That said, obtaining the Ultima Weapon in KH1 is less tedious on PS2. That's the only advantage. Otherwise the Final Mixes are better, especially in the case of 2.

I guess I meant more, recommending people play PS2 games on original hardware. Emulation is getting better but nowhere near where it needs to be to be recommendable.

But friendly reminder that PS2 was 480i at best. Interlacing is shit.
