It's pretty inevitable that villain characters are more interesting than hero characters, and it was a real shame that we never got a game that let you play as both sides
My favourite example of this is the console version of Battlefield 2 ("Modern Combat") where the campaign alternated between NATO and Chinese forces, where you won battles for each side as the war went on. This way you get a variety of missions and guns and stuff, and it's just fun. Then at the end they do the big team up against the secret illuminati who were pulling the strings or whatever, that's fine
This is yet another idea that is so obviously good yet doesn't get done in games much, oh but let's have yet another linear corridor shooter with shitty oscarbait cutscenes, spare me >tfw the best game, killzone liberation, doesn't run properly on ppsspp

Then they wouldn't be sympathetic and people wouldn't keep begging to play as them. Also its never coming back. People don't want slow heavy sluggish feeling in the way their FPS controls.
