Original version it is. What's up with the snes JRPG modding scene? I recall something similar happening with FFVI.

Most people who play Japanese games either already know Japanese, are learning Japanese, will learn Japanese at some point in the future, or have convinced themselves that terrible translations are actually "based" and "soulful".
People like you who truly care about Japanese games but aren't interested in learning the language are starting to become a minority.
I'd love to translate more games myself but it feels pointless if it will take me hundreds of hours and only be appreciated by a few dozen people. At that point I'd rather make something new by myself.
I posted a small translation last week. Guess how many views it has? Goose egg. Zero. I haven't advertised it or anything yet but I was hoping at least single digits of people would be interested in it without me having to specifically tell them about it.

It's unfortunate indeed, but thanks for learning the language and attempting to bring over some of the good stuff for us gaijins.

Hey Anon, I do care for faithful translations. Do tell which game did you translate and where can I find your patch.

FPBP. Even the allegedly "faithful" retranslations will still change certain elements to be more in line with their favorite Woolseyisms or personal fanfiction. The best way to play old JRPGs is always going to be in the original language.

What universe are you living in. Lots of people have fantasies about learning Japanese, but very few actually do to any meaningful degree.

I think the GBA version is a retranslation which is why nobody has bothered to do a quality retranslation patch from BoF1

I mean that you just play the GBA version of BoF1

Seems like the only meaningful differences between the two is that the GBA vversion has nice portraits, double the XP/Gold drops and gives you the ability to dash, nothing about a retranslation.

Best I could find. I think I was you a few years ago, looking for something that didn't exist. Don't remember what I ended up doing, but I remember the text being very clean.

It's not. Neither is the GBA version of 2.

Like with BoF2, the official translation is just weird or barely comprehensible at times, although there's a specific scene in BoF1 that is completely butchered by the official translation: when you have to save a guy possessed by a ghost, I couldn't really understand what the hell were the characters talking about. Like, they talk about completely unrelated things and don't help you in the quest at all. I had to look a guide up.

      Damn, I don't remember that;
I already started replaying the original, hopefully that scene comes soon.

IIRC, it's when you enter a boat and there's a guy lying on a bed. I replayed the scene twice, and I think what he actually meant to say was something about his past, but it ended up being this weird non-sequitur about dark places.

The original localization is perfectly playable. I don't know what the frick you are on about.

It's the second game that has a notoriously awful localization.

Breath of Fire 1, Dragon Quest 1, Final Fantasy 1
The holy trinity of comfy JRPGs.

    You're a homosexual.
The game has a fricking obnoxious encounter rate and there is nothing fun or challenging about repeating the same fight 1000 times. It's mindless tedium for losers who've never worked a job in their life so they fill that void by turning video games into tedium simulators.

Lowering the encounter rate actually makes the game harder because you're a lower level. Now you can't "reapeat best move to win" every fight.
