If the story can work with a character dead then they weren't really integral to it to begin with. Certain RPGs have made it possible to kill a vast amount of characters by making replacement NPCs that are basically just color palette swaps of the original NPC, problem with this is a lot of NPCs become bland. You could also try to continue the story forward with object clues, letters, or other things to drive the plot, but it would certainly start to feel a bit contrived.
thats compeltely not true and exposes you as someone which never had experience with good rpgs. story can continue by providing multiple ways to go through it which are not dependant on characters surviving 1st contact with a player. there are no "illusions" because you dont need illusion when game naturally build in such a way that you can solve main quest in different ways. I think you'll be relying primarily on your party of five dudes for most of the game.
But the Rogue Trader is 100% meant to act as the support and buffer of the party, half your abilities and traits is about making your party stronger and following your commands. Play as a noble and you'll have even more command abilties.

I only have 25 Leadership but by the end of most fights I'm rocking 50+.
That ability is not very good. When you play the game properly, you will win encounters in a couple of turns so you will get barely any benefit from it. I have 60 fellowship on my officer and I boost Argenta's ballistic skill to 90 at the end of the prologue.
Early on yeah, I plan on playing a Vanguard so I can run up to people, aoe taunt, then retaliate to everything and get like +40 in one turn. If it doesn't work like I intended it'll still be worth at least 10 Fellowship every fight from stab + dlc dual wield gun.
