Yeah, in the 90's it was hard to get an accurate picture of what your kids were playing from lying box art and the online space was very new. Also gaming magazines didn't always cover the game you wanted in the current issue and renting it doesn't mean you are skilled enough to see everything in the game that your kid will once they own it, even then both those cost additional money on top of the cost of the game.
Instead of giving into many parents and reactionaries demands for government censorship he simply brought all the retailers together and had them agree to only buy stock that had a descriptive warning by the industry on the package that allowed parents to see what questionable content was in the game. A solution that got the job done without overreaching.

This is dumb. Books don't have ratings and they're much older than games. How many 12 year old kids were reading shit like 50 Shades of Gray? And that's just the one that got called into the spotlight, there are tons of inappropriate books being read by kids all the time and nobody really cares aside from the small set of classics that get brought up every now and again when they try to teach them in schools.
I realize your argument is that parents cannot screen games, but they could easily screen books since all you have to do is read them. I'm saying they don't even do that, because nobody cares what their kids read.

I agree for the most part on the book part but politics moves towards what people complain about and visual media was it back i the day. TV was under much stricter regulations of what they could broadcast and when, films had their own rating system as well.
As far as outcomes go, a little symbol on the corner of the box that isn't even legally required is a fair compromise to a bunch of parents throwing a national hissy fit and demanding harsh censorship laws.

Visual mediums cause more immediate reactions in people. It's true outside fiction as well. A crime that has a graphic video taken of it is given infinitely more attention than a crime only described in words. Books are culturally considered a safe medium cause it's been around for so long and there's nothing instinctively objectionable about words on a page.

The issue I have with the ESRB is that any sexual content immediately gets an AO rating, but you can play as a serial killer and it's still only M. It treats sex as something innately "worse" than violence and murder, typical of American prudishness.

You realize that is still censorship? Ratings systems are stupid, the same thing happened to comic books, specifically batman where the comics had to comply with "moral" guidelines to be certified by a non governmental committee in order to sell more. It's why the killing joke comic is so iconic despite it being pretty bog standard, it was one of the first comics made after said committee fricked finally off, there's a reason why an entire era of Batman was dedicated to Adam west and dumb ass plots like buzzsaw Batman.

The comics code was about the big 3 publishers telling comic book store owners that they couldn't sell their comics alongside anything that wasn't CCA approved.

It effectively killed entire genres of comics for decades because they had to be sold behind counter or at "underground comix" scenes.

So yes, private companies CAN censor if they collaborate to control the entire medium.

The Hollywood blacklists of the 50s operated the same way. To avoid government scrutiny the big 5 studios fired and blacklisted anyone who was a suspected homosexual and/or communist sympathizer
