Yes lets argue opinions. That will turn out so productive. The title itself is ridiculous, I've played games for 30 years and I can't with good conscience claim a single one of them is the "ultimate game of all time". But I suppose Dark Souls does have some merit. It basically started the whole soulslike genre. No, the niche PS exclusive Demon's Souls nobody would even know about without DaS doesn't count. And the soulslike genre has since spawned many great games from FromSoft and other studios besides. It was also transformative in an era of CoD where everything is easy, so instead they created a game that was simple but hard. The story telling, as shit as it is, is also rather unique in that DaS is more about experiencing the world, than giving - or really even knowing without browsing YT vids for 2h - two shits about why you do what you do. And it culminated in Elden Ring which brought the semi-niche genre into public knowledge and surprisingly universal acclaim. By now it seems very likely that Elden Ring will create a whole genre of other games like it, and basically spawned a new type of popular games: hard, fair, and a return to the old design of dedicated loot and non-scaling enemies where it's up to the player to make do in the world, instead of having their hand held by trash RNG the whole way. DaS started all that.
I thought it was just me. I just hate the aesthetics and feel of these games. I can respect them for solid, fair gameplay and committing to an idea, though.

The criteria of the best game of all times will change with time as we go. I think it's natural that they didn't pick stuff like tetris, super mario and the likes. It's genre defining, in a way. If I had to pick one, I'd be torn between DaS and Dwarf Fortress for being singleminded, uncompromising expression with no regard for how it's perceived by anyone else, the life's work of a single autist.
I'd say it is a top 5 of all time mostly because it's a genre defining game, simple as. Regardless of how you feel about it, the game basically set up modern ARPG's as a whole, and how the entire RPG genre seems to be shifting too.

to be fair, the first half of Dark Souls was incredible. It was actually pretty difficult for me back in 2011 becaause I didn't have readily available internet access and nobody really knew what was good or not.
It felt really thrilling making it to Anor Londo.
Elden ring had a real anor londo and not just a hallway. With a nice sky box. The best part of anor londo is literally the first second you fly up over the ridge and see it. Exploring it is immediately not fun.
My enjoyment of Elden ring doesn't diminish the experience of making it to Andor Londo. I love Elden Ring too, its better than most open world games and the only open world game that stands along botw and totk for completely different reasons

Dark Souls is GOAT. it is the Ocarina of time for it's time. It's the citizen Kane of it's gen. It was a shadow drop. An unknown game when it came out overshadowed by other games.
But in time it destroyed the others. Even today it rings true.

It proved you only need gameplay.

It did this so well even the journos and normals picked up on this. This is why the game and the genre it helped spawn and popularized are with us today. I love the game. I played it before Elden ring and while it feels outdated. It has this feeling no other games have in it's gen. Like a PS2 or ps1 gen game with it's clunkiness..but it's a charming sort of clunkiness that doesn't hinder the experience when you get into it. And the world is beautiful. What surprises me is that no western game managed to make a good medieval knights and dragon type game and Japan was the one that got it right. How the hell did that happen.

I borderline raged at Bed of Chaos until I discovered the meme. Killed me almost 15 times (by contrast, Manus killed me 6 times, Artorias 5, O&S 2; most other bosses were one or two attempts).

HL2 is more important for It's influence rather than its own merit. Still a very good game, even today, but far far from the ultimate game of all time.
I would say yes because Dark Souls is really unique, once you play it on a good machine and you do not go below 30 fps in the sewers, I mean blighttown, it becomes genuinely kino. An amazing handcrafted "open world" without the bloat, so many shortcuts and no fast travel.
On the other hand... what was made after Anor Londo is shit in comparison. I genuinely do not understand why From Software never invested some of their cash in finishing properly Dark Souls.
No MMO has ever competed with WoW even til this day. I cant even count how many MMOs marketed themselves as WoW killers and all failed. The game is so good that after 20 years they had to re release it as Classic WoW.

Yep, it's moronic alright. Yes, it's deserved even if I think another game may have deserved it more. An "ultimate" game needs to be something that appeals to a lot of people, so a game that masters a very specific niche (such as Thief) wouldn't be really be able to compete in the field very well because it does one thing really well. Dark Souls punches above its weight class in every field that matters; the soundtrack is amazing, the world is masterfully crafted with diverse and exciting environments, level design is top-notch excepting for shitty enemy placement in a few of the late-game areas, it has a distinct artstyle that still manages to look better than a lot of more technically proficient games, it's filled with memorable characters despite a distinct lack of dialogue. Literally a genre-defining game.

It's alright, but it's not as hard as it's made out to be. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of how things work. To someone new to the series that's legitimate, but to me, it was a bit difficult at times but you felt some sense of accomplishment beating a pain in the ass boss.

The title itself is ridiculous, I've played games for 30 years and I can't with good conscience claim a single one of them is the "ultimate game of all time". But I suppose Dark Souls does have some merit. It basically started the whole soulslike genre. No, the niche PS exclusive Demon's Souls nobody would even know about without DaS doesn't count. And the soulslike genre has since spawned many great games from FromSoft and other studios besides. It was also transformative in an era of CoD where everything is easy, so instead they created a game that was simple but hard. The story telling, as shit as it is, is also rather unique in that DaS is more about experiencing the world, than giving - or really even knowing without browsing YT vids for 2h - two shits about why you do what you do. And it culminated in Elden Ring which brought the semi-niche genre into public knowledge and surprisingly universal acclaim. By now it seems very likely that Elden Ring will create a whole genre of other games like it, and basically spawned a new type of popular games: hard, fair, and a return to the old design of dedicated loot and non-scaling enemies where it's up to the player to make do in the world, instead of having their hand held by trash RNG the whole way. DaS started all that.

It felt really thrilling making it to Anor Londo.
Elden ring had a real anor londo and not just a hallway. With a nice sky box. The best part of anor londo is literally the first second you fly up over the ridge and see it. Exploring it is immediately not fun.
My enjoyment of Elden ring doesn't diminish the experience of making it to Andor Londo. I love Elden Ring too, its better than most open world games and the only open world game that stands along botw and totk for completely different reasons

It did this so well even the journos and normals picked up on this. This is why the game and the genre it helped spawn and popularized are with us today. I love the game. I played it before Elden ring and while it feels outdated. It has this feeling no other games have in it's gen. Like a PS2 or ps1 gen game with it's clunkiness..but it's a charming sort of clunkiness that doesn't hinder the experience when you get into it. And the world is beautiful. What surprises me is that no western game managed to make a good medieval knights and dragon type game and Japan was the one that got it right. How the hell did that happen.

I would say yes because Dark Souls is really unique, once you play it on a good machine and you do not go below 30 fps in the sewers, I mean blighttown, it becomes genuinely kino. An amazing handcrafted "open world" without the bloat, so many shortcuts and no fast travel.

Yep, it's moronic alright. Yes, it's deserved even if I think another game may have deserved it more. An "ultimate" game needs to be something that appeals to a lot of people, so a game that masters a very specific niche (such as Thief) wouldn't be really be able to compete in the field very well because it does one thing really well. Dark Souls punches above its weight class in every field that matters; the soundtrack is amazing, the world is masterfully crafted with diverse and exciting environments, level design is top-notch excepting for shitty enemy placement in a few of the late-game areas, it has a distinct artstyle that still manages to look better than a lot of more technically proficient games, it's filled with memorable characters despite a distinct lack of dialogue. Literally a genre-defining game.
Do *I* think it's the best game ever? No, SMB3 is and I will fight anyone who disagrees with me on this point, but it's better than seeing something like Ocarina of Time for the umpteenth fricking time or Tetris as the obligatory hipster pick.

It's alright, but it's not as hard as it's made out to be. It's pretty easy when you get the hang of how things work. To someone new to the series that's legitimate, but to me, it was a bit difficult at times but you felt some sense of accomplishment beating a pain in the ass boss.
