I haven't touched FF8 since it was new, but I dropped it at the final dungeon because I had been waiting the entire time for it to get good and it sucked the whole time. It probably deserves an attempt at a replay, after so long, but I can't be fricked. Too many other things I'd rather play.
The most compelling part of FFVIII, the thing that would make its story engaging, is the exploration of Squall's psyche juxtaposed with Laguna's, and Squall learning the lesson from his visions of Laguna that he can open himself up emotionally, let his guard down, and still have friends and purpose in his life
The game doesn't land that story beat properly, squall doesn't grow in any meaningful measure when he does almost get it, and the game's back end pacing is completely fricked to boot. Not even close.
It's a fun entry in the series, but it's shilled to hell and back. Cloud having identity issues and struggling to overcome his inferiority is significantly more compelling than any of the flashy anime fight slop that resulted from the spin-offs.
I tried to play the game - it´s literally unplayable. I had to drop it after two hours giving it a chance. Two hours of my life noone will give me back. How the older generation dare to mock us if they have such shit taste
if you didn't get immediate strong vibes in the reactor core — with the strange glowing mako energy below and the dramatic music — you're a tasteless pleb.

I played FFVII for the first time way out of its era and shit like this impressed me massively.
No. To this day, it's still objectively the best JRPG of all time.
If anything, now it's underrated because zoomers just play the remake thinking they don't need to play the original, not knowing what they're missing.
dude, as someone who grew up without playing this game, holy shit. I ate well enough with games like Symphonia and Legend of Mana, but goddamn is this game fantastic. I played so I could play the remake and honestly while I don't think the remake is bad by any stretch I understand why people are rightfully angry about the game. VII is easily a generation defining JRPG.
I don't need you to, what you're stating is explicit. However, I don't care what some random dude on Ganker said, and I stand by my generation defining JRPG because it is the JRPG that 100% defines the PS1 gen.
Cool story bro. Last response from me because you're obviously trolling when the thread is about whether FFVII is overrated. It is btw, even with my previous statement. Have a good one m8.
What a ridiculous comment. How hasn’t it aged well? That’s like saying SMB3 or Sonic 1 or Ocarina of Time haven’t aged well.
FFVII is still the best FF game and best JRPG
>What a ridiculous comment.
Just because you are too stupid to do some critical thinking doesn't make something ridiculous you pompous homosexual.
>How hasn’t it aged well?
Early 3D already looked iffy back in the day due to technical limitations and max polygon counts.
Now it doesn't have the novelty effect it had back then so it just looks like shit.
This is opposed to 2D where even older DOS games still look great and are only held back due to pixel count.
Gameplay-wise there are just too many unpolished mini games that don't really add anything other than halt the momentum of the story.
>That’s like saying SMB3 or Sonic 1 or Ocarina of Time haven’t aged well.
We are not talking about these games and the comparison with SMB3 and Sonic 1 doesn't make sense because they have nothing in common with FF7 except they're all video games.
Those games do have an advantage in the sense that they are 2D, which, as mentioned before, doesn't age as bad as early 3D.
Ocarine of Time also suffers from technical limitations and clunky controls. Let alone that the N64 controller is objectively the shittiest controller ever designed.
No you’re just moronic. The sprites are stylized the way they are because of the limitations and they not only look great but are emotive as well. The backgrounds and FMV’s also look great still. >complaining about the N64 controller
You never owned an N64. The controller was great if you knew how to use it. The Wiimote was a far worse controller.
Fact is your generation is brain damaged.
I tried to play the game - it´s literally unplayable. I had to drop it after two hours giving it a chance. Two hours of my life noone will give me back. How the older generation dare to mock us if they have such shit taste
Yes, it and 6 both got a massive boost for coming out when the core Ganker audience were at the right age. It's still enjoyable and the music is in the top tier of the franchise, but it's still baby's first RPG with a good not great story. I still enjoy it though and eat up every bit of Compilation slop to include the gacha
>says the story is good not great >plays the fricking gacha
Do the board a favor and have a nice day. Not only is the story of FFVII great, but each character and side story is top notch as well.
7 - play a PS1 emulator or on PS3 though. I think a big reason why people don’t think it looks good today is that the PC port has always had uglier shiny sprites. In the original release everything blends better.
No.
Final Fantasy 7 is the game that people played and realized that games can be more than just toys for kids, that it's an art form like any other.
For that, it will always have legendary status.

Persona came out before FF7. Unless you're saying one of the later anime friendship simulators are good, in which case you should invest in a rope

And the remake series has ruined the overall perception of the original since people consider the remake depictions the "true" versions of the events and characters even though the remake is a billion times worse cartoon parody of VII that misses every mark.
Yeah it sucks. Games lik Kingdom Hearts and Smash fricked up a lot of zoomer's impressions of what the game is about. There isn't some grand epic anime rivalry between Cloud and Sephiroth, hell Sephiroth barely even knows who Cloud is. He's insignificant to him, he was just a useful puppet. It's debatable if Sephiroth was even truly alive in the original or if it was Jenova controlling him.

It was good for the time. The graphics were impressive to most people who were still playing snes and genesis. It really felt like a leap. Even Today, the pacing and speed of the turn-based gameplay is tolerable.
Nah, FFVI fans have done a great job keeping it in the spotlight all this time complaining about it being overrated even during FF conversations that had nothing to do with either game.
I think more than any other entry in the series it succeeds in creating a new, modern myth. There's a creative vibrancy to it that surpasses even 6 and 9, though I prefer those. It's weirdly the most sublime FF artistically despite having the wonkiest graphics in the series.

the point of jrpg battle systems is to hit a comfy sweet spot between action and strategy that neither too engrossing (pure action games) nor too abstract (pure strategy games). the "tedium" then becomes the point.
Materia system is fun, probably the best experiment they have done with a mechanic to base an entire game around. FFVIII junctions are a different story, it drags the game down a peg alone and ends up with everyone using the same GF sets to get even stat spreads.
Unplayable without speed hacks. The only people who remember this game fondly remember the sweet relief of not having to slog through that garbage anymore.
It's kind of like tying a rubber band around the head of your pecker and taking it off after 60 hours of someone reading deviant art fanfic to you.
Not for me, I still replay it annually.
It used to bother me when people would talk it down reflexively, with a take-THAT attitude, and a lot of the criticism was banal sound-bite shit (how many times has some idiot spouted 'Midgar is the only good part of the game' for example). But as I get older I realize that's just the internet being the internet, and it has no bearing on my enjoyment, now going over 25 years.
tl, dr - Still The Best 1997
VII only became overrated when people looked over the 10/10 kino that is VIII in favour of it
Disc 2 (the most important disc) of FF8 sucks and is probably the most boring disc of any FF game. Cope, homosexual.
And no, everything from the presentation to the music to the story is GOAT. Simple as.
first post worst post
Not a single FF8 fan will try to defend disc 2 because 99% of them drop it at the end of disc 1.
I haven't touched FF8 since it was new, but I dropped it at the final dungeon because I had been waiting the entire time for it to get good and it sucked the whole time. It probably deserves an attempt at a replay, after so long, but I can't be fricked. Too many other things I'd rather play.
Why are FF8gays always the most delusional
None of them played past disc 1.
This. Legit might be the best final fantasy if you ignore the second disc. I never understood how they dropped the ball so hard.
I liked Squall up until his story intertwined with Rinoa's story. Mostly because Rinoa is dead weight he has to drag around. At one point literally
The most compelling part of FFVIII, the thing that would make its story engaging, is the exploration of Squall's psyche juxtaposed with Laguna's, and Squall learning the lesson from his visions of Laguna that he can open himself up emotionally, let his guard down, and still have friends and purpose in his life

fanfics and shipping war blogposts, the purest form of media
Before crisis
Before Crisis was a cellphone game that focused on the Turks
Battling and stuff was tedious
the point of jrpg battle systems is to hit a comfy sweet spot between action and strategy that neither too engrossing (pure action games) nor too abstract (pure strategy games). the "tedium" then becomes the point.
No
Materia system is fun, probably the best experiment they have done with a mechanic to base an entire game around. FFVIII junctions are a different story, it drags the game down a peg alone and ends up with everyone using the same GF sets to get even stat spreads.
Nope it's one of the best games ever made, and it will hold that status forever.

Better than all the other final fantasys
At the time, frick no. Even in 2016 it was a great game.
Now though…
Still the GOAT.
It has an explicit gay sex scene so it's automatically overrated.
The JRPG format didn't age well but it was good for what it had to work with
No
I hate the remake so fricking much though
I like the remake
That's terrible.
You are hurting my feelings.
Nope. It's just that good.
