it is fairly hard. from the turbo tunnel onwards, almost every obstacle/section in the game will kill you the first time you run into it and you have to learn the exact way to get through every stage. karnaths lair, volkmires inferno, underground tunnels, rat race, and the last stage are particularly tough. its also pretty long with 12 stages so thats a lot of levels you have to learn, albeit some of the hardest levels can be skipped with the warps. surprisingly the last boss is pretty easy so the game kind of gives you a break there.

    With enough practice, it's not.
But popping it in for the first time can prove difficult for most casual players. But that's what makes a great video game after all.

I can make it to the last level but I've never beaten it. If I owned it though I feel I would have beat it and feel the difficulty is just right.

Considering it's known to be hard based on Turbo Tunnel, one of the easiest levels in the game, because most people never passed there is pretty revealing. It's not the hardest obviously but it's a hard game.

I found Battlemaniacs turbo tunnel more difficult than NES battletoads.

Oh really? That's interesting. It's a bit shorter, I usually find BM levels easier by some amount. It's definitely the game I could complete earlier than the original.

I was filtered for the longest time because I didn't realise you could HOP out of pits in the battlemaniacs turbo tunnel. How the hell was I suppose to know that?

Now I'm having childhood flashbacks about that, you're right. Those little white rocks you have to time a button press on were ridiculous design. There's no prompt, no warning, no precedence and no indication that you are not already fricked since you're in the death zone. There also aren't other objects in the level you have to hit a button to use. But apart from those, it does have mostly segments of the same block patterns from the NES game and a few obstacles less and once you get it, I think it's easier.

After that's figured out, I think the only other thing in the game that needs active figuring out from a player would be Roller Coaster? Clinger Winger in NES has arrows on the track, but Roller Coaster just says die until you understand what inputs are required of you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRBdwPvh0U8
I reached it before having ever seen Clinger Winger on NES (Terra Tubes was my filter) so I had no idea.

1st release (US/EU) was the hardest. The Famicom version made it easier in a number of ways. The Genesis/MD version is based off the Famicom port.
