There is no such thing as shifting in 999. People from different timelines can SHARE information through morphogenetic field, that's all there is to it. It's not like they can swap with each other, it's all one big collective consciousness. Junpei's and Akane's connection is unique in that this is the only instance (that we know of), where information sharing happened between two unrelated people. Then VLR and later ZTD shat all over that with retcons. Uchikoshi can't write sequels for shit and should be forbidden from doing so. The first AI was also much better than the sequel.
