Should I wait for the remasters or play the originals? Do the remasters change the dialogue and names in anyway? If not, I'll just play the originals.
Just play the originals. I binged the series a few years ago and they’re still fun to play. Check walkthroughs if you want to recruit all 108 people because there are many missables. Check the true ending guide for 2 as well, I remember some weird shit about a hidden quick time event or timed section where you have to mash a button randomly during a scene.
The original translation is fine, so just play that if you want. The first is kinda trash, though.
Part of it had to do with sheer unavailability of the game until it popped up on PSN some years ago.
Remaster seems to be largely changing the visuals and implementing diagonal movement from the PSP ports.
What bothers me is what changes will they do at a technical level
Didn't suikoden have a weird bug when transferring a save file where only the initial of the main character name was transferred or something like that?
>Didn't suikoden have a weird bug when transferring a save file where only the initial of the main character name was transferred or something like that?
It did yes, enjoy your TcDohl
They wouldn't do that, right? They wouldn't just leave that in. Oh frick
>Part of it had to do with sheer unavailability of the game
it was never unavailable. places like blockbuster and hollywood video had this game for rent in the deep south, lol
it was never remotely rare
The 2d sprites of the original aged like fine wine, probably the best of the psx generation.
just play originals anon, unless they fix the disaster that was the sound effects and menus in the remaster that they showed off it's gonna be strictly worse.
except it's still great, dunno what you're on about. games do not get forgotten when they're good, people replay them every few years. i played suikoden 1 and 2 hard mode hacks a couple years ago. i played shining force 2 and phantasy star 4 more times than i can count. i keep finding ways to do challenge runs with limitations of vandal hearts purely because i want to play it again and it be harder.
why do you expect regular threads about a dead series that's been dead for decades from a company who is notoriously dogshit and doesn't care about their niche ips?
I didn't forget it, in fact I have it on preorder for the swicth later this year
Never heard of it looks gay
Similar to something like FF6, the game isn't actually good, its reputation was built among moronic 12 year olds posting on GameFAQs. For Suikoden 2 it's especially easy to see how shit the game is because the first game is such a superior experience. moronic groupthink based on nothing doesn't survive forever, eventually reality will overcome it.
I don't know man, people still unironically think Chrono Trigger is the greatest game ever made
Chrono Trigger is a lot better than either of those other two games, the simple fact that its gameplay and storytelling are both competent is enough to put it miles ahead of them. It's understandable that an intelligent person would be charmed by CT because it has engaging presentation and pacing while doing nothing seriously wrong, but something like Suikoden 2 is too brutally awful to be enjoyed by any thinking person, with constant tedious scenarios, horrible storytelling, dull bloated environments and its horrendous attempt at SRPG army battles.
Chrono Trigger is absolutely the worst of the 3 games. It's the most ""cinematic"" of the three and the least game.
It is though
That was FF7 you homosexual, nobody cared about that game until the GameFAQS shilling during the mid 2000s, same with Chrono Trigger
>FF7
>nobody cared about that game until the GameFAQS
Just shut the frick up, actual imbecile.
>FF7
>Nobody cared about the game that still survives today and makes money hand over fist
Anon shut the frick up
The game also, that, ya frickin know, pretty much pushed rpgs into mainstream. You had ppl who'd never touch an rpg before playing it because holy frick it was only the most popular ps1 game ever fricking released!
You're a fricking moron if you think 1 is superior to 2
Black person wrote 2 first and had to make 1 as an afterthought to prove to Konami it needed an adequate budget
Breath of Fire 3 is the PS1 RPG that deserves the kind of praise Suikoden II gets.
Valkyrie Profile is
>furry game
Yeah, no.
All three were one of my favorite RPGs of all time.
Really hard to tell which one got the first spot
Please tell me how you didn't grow up with rpgs, you lying sack of gay. Frick you, your "opinion" is shit as frick.
Yup. Suikoden was always a B-tier RPG. FF VIII was the best of the era, Legend of Legaia etc. was A-tier, etc.
I don't know why JRPGs got so many posers all of a sudden, I imagine it has something to do with MMOs.
FF8 was so fricking huge my computer teacher showed the trailer off in class.
Aaaaand here come the moron contrarians
>first game is such a superior experience
>For Suikoden 2 it's especially easy to see how shit the game is because the first game is such a superior experience.
Oh frick off with the contrarian bullshit. S1 is extremely dated and barebones compared to 2.
>S1 is extremely dated and barebones compared to 2.
The two games have the same mechanics, the difference is that S1 isn't a padded boring mess with a kids' anime tier story.
I like s1 better too anon. Not by much, but the castle is cooler, the setting for the war is cooler, the generals are cooler and all recruitable, neclord having an actual vampire castle instead of just some lakeside mansion is much cooler.
S2 is much better technically with rune slots, better unite magic and everything, but the atmosphere of s1 slaps harder in most locations
Don't you think if it really was good then people would still be talking about it?
No, almost nobody actually plays and cares about games anymore except as a social experience with morons online, the only difference between this place and Reddit is how edgy the humor is.
Its still my favorite jrpg but theres not much else to talk about for me anymore after 20 years. I can close my eyes and play the entire games without booting a ps1.
for me it's Legend of the Dragoon
DOUBLE SLASH!!!
HUUH HAH HURR VOLCANO !!!
I played it for the first time this year and I thought it was great. I liked walking around the castle and checking things out as it develops and people are moving in. The only thing I didn't like about it is I preferred the first one's war battles.
Yeah, decking out the castle with new characters and seeing it develop is MAXIMUM COMFY.
>i've never seen an anime tv show or played a video game before
Yeah we can tell.
Read the book. no need for a shounenified rubbish rpg adaptation.
I have no nostalgia with this game so when I tried to play it I just found it lacking in every department.
The only thing I know about Suikoden is that the series was a huge inspiration for Legion Saga, a classic RPG Maker series
>make game with tons of content
>make one quest that forces you to speedrun it
how to ruin your game in 1 easy step
ultimately Clive's quest is just a couple extra story scenes that are really only relevant to Clive you can easily watch on youtube in current year. You don't get anything tangible for it.
that's why it's so fricking stupid. I'm not going to play a 60 hour game and then spend another 30 hours replaying it for 15 minutes of extra content. I ended up playing through each area taking time to talk to everyone and then loading a save state at the start to rush through.
>just youtube it
it's not the same
damn, wtf. it's like the devs really thought they're gonna punish people who thoroughly enjoy their game and effort put into it and reward speedrunners just because
Damn, i wonder what devs were smoking
what's the story here
You either stop having fun and speedrun this game in about 12 hours or less, or lose the strongest weapon in the game
damn I'd rather have missables than this shit
Well, missables on top of that made FF9 not very fun for completionists
I don't give a frick about your autism.
FF9's secrets are unreasonable.
Someone is salty they didn't go to PlayOnline to find the answers.
yeah clives quest is a mistake. it's unfortunate, because its a bunch of good scenes too and a good story. elza is a great character, the guild is interesting, her ending fricking sucks because you don't get to do anything about it or get revenge, she's frankly a better character than clive by miles. it's just really dumb they stuck like 3 or 4 different random timegates throughout the game to see the scenes.
qrd?
You have to reach certain points in the plot before a set time in order to see some cutscenes involving Clive.
Love me some Suikoden. Love me some Water Margin. Still want my proper Water Margin game
I remember reading that he didn't actually give a shit about Water Margin and just used the name to sell the project to his boomer producers.
Given that the game's entire premise of encountering and recruiting a random assortment of subcharacters to your base and then facing off against the evil is exactly the whole point of what makes Water Margin unique among novels... I doubt that.
Likewise many of the characters starting with the protag himself are unapologetically Chinese with their dress and weapon choices.
That doesn't point to someone who simply tackled on a famous name to a completely unrelated project.
The series was damaged by three horrible sequels and shitty spin off games.
The remakes for 1 & 2 being delayed so they can redo the graphics and audio is a great sign though. We can already play straight ports on PC so its nice we are actually getting improvements now.
>tfw no Eilie wanting your dick like she did Riou's
>every female romance is a tomboy
what did they mean by this?
>three horrible sequels
homie what? 3 was great and 5 was decent, 4 was the only bad one. Not mentioning tierkreis cause honestly it isn't a real Suikoden game
5 was great and 3 was decent
I loved 5 and thus not too inclined to argue against that, just so long as we agree that 4 had some fun ideas that were torpedoed by some really bad implementation
I replayed it for the first time since launch recently and it definitely isn't as great as I remember. Suikoden 1 is more fun.
Can't wait to see zoomers getting destroyed by that bad ending
Even normal ending is impossible to get without some kind of guide
no one cares, pedro
Suikoden 1's perfect end is fairly doable, there's really only one bullshit character that you can permanently miss if I remember right. 2 is literal nightmare mode though. I've replayed it several times and never gotten the perfect end. Not that I care because I enjoy bashing Jowy's head in.
In 2 you can outright frick yourself by choosing the wrong monster to recruit. Or just being too slow with Clive's quest.
The only way you can frick yourself with the monsters is by getting the second octopus, which you pretty much have to know is there and go out of your way to do. Most players would probably get the griffin and unicorn without even knowing about the first octopus.
The most brutal Frick You recruitments are:
1. Clive. Oh, you didn't walk down the path on the right in Muse after the Fort and get the cutscene--something you have no particular reason to do, especially since you've previously had the chance to explore the city in full? Then he never shows up in South Window. No Clive for you, homosexual.
2. Gilbert. Oh, did one of the AI controlled units in this brief battle not damage the enemy unit with Gilbert--something over which you have literally no control whatsoever? No Gilbert for you then, you stupid ugly piece of fricking dog shit.
Recruiting Clive isn't timed FFS, this myth should have died years ago and you'd need full blown aspergers to be bothered about not seeing 1 scene with Elza that barely makes sense if you haven't played two visual novels to begin with.
This anon is correct. Missing his timed quest does NOT affect the 108 star thing.
Doing 2 blind and I missed one character, apparently it was a squirrel you get at the beginning by checking a tree lmao.
Not mandatory though
I got the ending where Nanami dies and Riou walks away. I don't complain too much, I thought it was a fine ending, suitably bittersweet.
Everyone who plays S2 should watch the true ending.
>letting nanami die
I'd rather kill myself. She lives, lyon lives, they all get to live frick you you don't kill off cute girls who are nice. Killing off mathiu is bad enough and makes me sad, I'm not taking more than that.
The 1st squirrel IS a star. The others aren't
I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who ever brings up Legaia these days.
But what about LEGAIA 2
DUAL SAGA
Doesn't exist.
I've only played the second game and I liked it, apparently everyone who played the first game hated it though.
This game is so tedious. The random battles take forever, even when you're overleveled.
There's also no strategy or anything to the fights. You just spirit and input the same combo every turn while healing. The animations are so long too
I loved this game as a kid, but went back to it as an adult and couldn;t stand how slow it was
Still not as tedious as LoD battles.
I remember being mad at Legaia's random battles not allowing me to hear the full version of the world map theme.
Mist world map theme>>>>>>>>>>>Post Mist world map theme
sukondeez real?
When Eiyuden comes out, interest will probably reignite
still the best for me
post yfw when gothic neclord theme starts playing
I feel like I'm the only one who hated it. Me and my friend used to make fun of how out of place and stupid we thought it was. Then come to find out everyone else loved it.
I wish they remade this game and added incest. That would be so hot
The series would be better if the protagonists weren't silent.
I liked expanding my castle and doing the cooking contest. Everything else sucks.
>Go clean up these oil stains
>Go do 3 random chores
>Go shopping
What is this shit, a boredom simulator?
Reminder that nowadays the goto recommendation to JRPGS are Octoshit Traveller and Crystal Project
>The genre has fallen
>forgotten
Not for me.
Still looking forward to eiyuden.
But Suikoden 2 doesn’t have Miakis.
Bloody roar is dead for a long time now. That one won't come back
https://www.gematsu.com/2023/08/suikoden-i-ii-hd-remaster-gate-rune-and-dunan-unification-wars-delayed-beyond-2023
giv
They did it because eiyuden was delayed as well
Suikoden 1 and 2 are my favorite JRPGs of all time. Never played the sequels, except for the spinoff Tierkreis on the NDS which was shit in every way.
I played V and even though it looked kinda shit it was still a good game
One day I'll check out the rest of the series. I've heard very good things about 3 and 5, and very mixed/bad things about 4.
the only good thing about 3 is the opening
3 is great, Yuber is very dapper.
People unjustly hate 4 for only a couple of reasons, the game is actually relatively good imo, it's roughly on par with 5 for me just because 5 has such a fricking miserable like 5+ hour beginning and 4 starts much faster.
People dislike snowe, fine, he's a gay but he's not on screen much. People dislike party reduction to 4, fair, but what you gonna do. It doesn't ruin the game whilst it is still less fun to only pick 3 characters instead of 5 to take. And people dislike ocean travelling, also fair but they overblow it. Use fast characters, retreat from fights, stick a champion rune on and never get ocean fights again, and use a fricking map from the internet instead of trying to sail to every single bit of the map until all the fog is gone. These three things solve the majority of the ocean issues. Also I swear the people who complain about the boat that much genuinely don't know to hold the button to go faster or something.
Other than those things, games pretty good, cool antagonist, cool setting, best jeanne in the series, depressed alcoholic gilf tactician, kika being kika.
3 suffers the most from being old, early 3d looks like shit, a billion backtracking to do, and honestly I just don't like the canon main character, and the combat is less interesting than any other suikoden. It's worse than 4, because sure you get to pick 6 characters but you don't actually get to use 6 properly you only get to issue one command per duo and its whack
I find it interesting on S3 had a dedicated Tenkai star who was exclusively handling the HQ stuff. It usually makes no sense for the protagonist to do that shit when there's a war going on.
Interesting yes, but he sucked as a character too for me honestly, as boring as hugo. 1 and 2 make the grasslands seem cool with the big hat lady assassin, but then in its actual game you get shitters like hugo as the representatives. s3 got shafted by terribly aging graphics, an experiment with the combat that didn't work well, too many just terrible characters, and the fact that people wanted the harmonia lore and info and the game entirely about harmonias shit barely gives you any information that people were after. Also it ruins yuber and to a lesser degree luc
Does the manga adaptation redeem Suikoden 3?
Tried to play 3 aftee loving the above the battle system and somehow the war system being worse than S2 put me off of it.
Chris' design is so awesome
I like the manga more than S3. Hugo is the Flame Champion and it weaves in Chris and her Father instead of it being cut out in Hugo's route.
The manga was way better written than the game itself. It's thanks to the manga that I started to appreciate 3 actually.
Not helped by the fact S3 was ultimately an irrelevant border skirmish and impression that we JUST missed a far more interesting story.
Is it really irrevalent when two minor states (Grasslands and Zexen) still have their runes at the end of the game?
Suikoden 3 was progressing towards a decent conflict escalation about Harmonia and the Runes.
>Suikoden 1 is a civil war set in a breakaway kingdom of Harmonia.
>Suikoden II is a war between two states, with the Highland kingdom being a vassal of Harmonia.
>Suikoden 3 is a major war with two states fighting Harmonia that involves foreign players.
Also, aside from Hugo, Chris and Gedo having the Fire, Water and Lighting Runes. You got:
>Tir with the Soul Water rune hanging out at Banner Village.
>Ryou and Jowy bearing the Shield and Sword runes on an aimless journey with Nanami.
Damn, maybe Suikoden IV was supposed to be a world war against Harmonia instead of fricking around some useless islands.
>Damn, maybe Suikoden IV was supposed to be a world war against Harmonia instead of fricking around some useless islands.
We may never know. The main writer leaving suddenly screwed up anything the previous series tried to build and they couldn't do any sequels. That's why 4 and 5 were prequels. Hopefully the spiritual successor actually gives us insight on what was planned.
there's something weird about 3's graphics. they're so blocky it almost comes across as stylized.
>Get to own his own town
>Business is booming and great heroes frequent
>Get rub shoulder with heroes making history
>Has loyal tomboy warrior
GIWTWM
CHOOSE
Kasumi. Easy.
why would you not pick kasumi
Because you don't play as Tir in that game, so there's no point and Valeria's unit is stronger
Yes, but you can bring Kasumi to Tir and get a cute scene with them.
Kasumi.
Cute ninja girl that gives you access to her village
but ninjas suck. valeria's unite with anita is basic, but has decent 3x damage.
I picked her even though she was weak because she was one of the few characters that had bouncing boobs in her combat sprite
Yeah homie its kasumi like wtf dis aint even a choice fool
Valeria obviously, pure unadulterated sex
I wish people would make more Suikoden threads, it was my childhood title.
It depends on the game. The choice in s2 where this is a real option is kasumi just for early ninja village access.
Ultimately for most players though, valeria is a superior combat unit in both games. Falcon rune is just too good. Can't miss, great damage, no unbalance. Compare it to shrike which is dogshit unbalance. Only reason to take kasumi for combat is if you want to put the rune that makes everyones speed equal to hers or just want an all around high speed party for some reason
Thread theme
Anyone going into S2 today knows about Luca and is robbed of the surprise. Did you really have 18 boss-ready characters back in the day? Also, I think the fight would've been actually challenging if you had to actually WIN it. Luca's health during in the duel doesn't really matter much.
>Luca wasn't the final boss
Missed opportunity
I love how crazy powerful he was. Walks through every single one of your traps, and you STILL have to have a boss fight and duel with him
>Did you really have 18 boss-ready characters back in the day?
You didn't actually need this though, you didn't need fully equipped, sharpened, runed, elvelled party members. You could have anywhere between 1-3 in each party and then your next best units that were just half assed and do fine
For me? It's Trails in the Sky. Olivier best girl.
You wrote tita wrong
tita is made of paper and got the shelf treatment posthaste.
It was good and I wish they would make a new one
They did actually and it was meh
Because that wasn't made by the Suikoden developers.
s5 is just uninspired as it took the good parts of what worked and called it a day
>it took the good parts of what worked and called it a day
If lt worked, why change it?
Post the amazing high quality graphics of the remaster
Suikoden is easily one of if not the greatest RPG franchise ever created but it got murdered by 4 and Tactics and never recovered. Tactics was okay but no one wanted that shit.
Suikoden 2 will never be forgotten.
That art is timeless. Unlike ugly shit like FF7
It's the big sprites that make the difference. I'm amazed how many unique animations there are used for single scenes.
Best pairing
I loved the high school arc in Suikoden 2 and wished it went on for longer.
I don't understand how they fricked up Suikoden 3 so much? Also, I'm sadden that the new game from the creator of Suikoden got delayed until next year.
budget restraints and meddling most likely. I highly doubt team wanted to re-use the same areas three times.
The original writer quit halfway through the production, it's probably why the start of the character stories are at least intriguing, only to end like a wet fart.
I love it but I don't think it was really considered that around here
In fact I've seen plenty of threads shitting on it. And I haven't been vocal about it because apparently liking these is having shit taste
It was a solid shonen story, this is one of the things that bother me with jrpg gays though. Everyone praises their favorite as some daring story while the ones they don’t like are shonen or anime or whatever. FF6gays are especially awful with this.
It really is like an early 2000s anime
It's actually surprising Suikoden 2 wasn't turned into one or hell, the other way around
It turned into a VN, but yeah.
was it ever popular on Ganker or OP is just "spreading misinformation"?
It isn't unpopular but this would be like 1% of the threads done about fricking FFIX (which I love, don't get me wrong, but if you're going to talk about obnoxious fans they take the fricking cake)
Everything Konami did ended up second rate. Normies turned on Metal Gear, Silent Hill is only remembered by hipsters. So it's only normal that nobody remembers anything about Suikoden outside of laughing pig enthusiast.
Did someone play EC: rising?
What did you guys think about it?
this is already a retro now so of course it's not going to be talked often, xenogears is an exception for some reason but in any case this is a Georg thread now
This game was very popular in the late 90s and early 2000 because a limited print run caused copies to soar 100+ dollars. Those with copies were smug contrarian homosexuals who would go on forums and bash Final Fantasy while siting Suikoden II as the defacto GOAT JRPG.
Here's the thing. It's not the best Suikoden game. 3 and 5 are better. They just had ugly 3D models and shit soundtracks, but the characters and story were much better. Who plays Suikoden for the gameplay and aesthetics anyways.
Which one?
What was up with e-girl viki?
It's the OG Viki prior to whatever mindbreak fricker her up.
But she seems to know her older self. It's weird
I was so attracted to Viki
I hope eiyuden gets a viki
And Hikusaak still got away with everything
>mfw best ending feels completely artificial and tacked on removing all consequences to the entire war
I'd argue tragic ending is the best fit for S2.
it's meant to be a reward for getting all 108 characters
S1 has some fricked level design, like babby's first RPG maker project
But I liked the whole starting out with nothing and building a proper fricking army by the end, genuine fun
for me it's Legend of Legaia
Playing it right now and getting my ass kicked by Xain.
Why is this motherfricker doing 1k on a regular attack when my characters are barely reaching 800hp
Can you even get the best ending in 2 without having finished the first game with the best ending? Which is impossible without a guide.
So... Should i start with S1 or S2? It doesn't seem like there's a consensus yet.
Start with 1 it's perfectly good, then 2 will seem better in comparison
Thanks anons
Both are fine, 2 is generally considered better but Suikoden 1 is by no mean a bad game. Playing S1 before will also let you recruit bonus characters in S2.
>bonus character"s"
Only the MC from 1
1, the returning characters in 2 will be more fun when you already met them.
You can import the save file 1->2->3.
You should start with S1, so you can realize how hard S2 fricked up everything that was great about the first game.
Welcome to Nutsack Castle.
I feel so good.
Black person castle for me
>getting the escape ending with nanami
God, i love bad endings like that
I did find this recently, neat fig, but i don't really want it.
