Sonic is able to defeat King Arthur's minions in the opening cut scene without the sword. It was just a pointless gimmick at a time when the Sonic series was desperately trying anything with little quality control

People had every right to be skeptical when almost any time Sonic did something "new" it ended up being badly executed in terms of gameplay.
And yet again they were right, Black Knight is mediocre at best
Sonic 4 and Lost World were extremely safe and did nothing new and yet they were still trash.

In the end the game ended up souring on people due to being more Secret Rings in a post Unleashed world and still managing to be less Sonic'y, but execution aside i don't think people were that against the sword as a concept
