This is the best summary of the Phil fish situation. It's especially funny when he weighed in on GG like he expected to have the last word and everyone laughed him out of the room so he cried about taking his toys and going home.
GG isn't related specifically to him leaving the industry (for the most part) and cancelling Fez 2. It was multiple things, but it at first seemed like the spats with that one journo, Marcus Beer (who would shit on Jon and Fish as though he weren't entitled) came to a head. Eventually, as recently as this year, we basically got a confirmation that he wasn't really feeling it to begin with. It seemed like the thing to do, but there were other things he wanted to do with his life and the game was in an early/pre-concept phase, so it was easy to just cancel it. The positive AND negative motivation was already there. Iirc, he did some sort of visual work on at least another game after that.

Not at all. The story has actually been consistent between his "This isn't the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign." and the more recent elaboration. He also could easily hire a programmer with funds earned from the game even in that case. People just sort of add more and more to the story as they go, whether out of ignorance or spite. I don't remember seeing Renaud ever saying a bad thing about Phil, and he still has his development involvement in Fez in his twitter description even now.
yeah it came out most of fez's design was conceptualized by phil's former partner, the guy he sperges about in the infamous indie documentary. that's probably why the game took 20 years to come out once he left, and why fish canceled the sequel. dude didn't have any of his own ideas

If this is supposed to be a dunk on some popular indie game then I wouldn't know which one you mean, but Fez really is one of the most unfocused games I've ever played. Way back in the day, Phil Fish and Shawn McGrath got together to collaborate on Fez. I think Fish was just some dickweed working at Ubisoft at the time and mostly contributed art while it was Shawn who came up with the idea for the game. While it's very disputed what Phil exactly stole, because of lots of he-said she-said and other indie bullshit drama, at the very least McGrath does acknowledge Phil stole his idea.
