Donkey Kong is a parody of King Kong which is set in New York City. This was later parodied again in Mario Odyssey with New Donk City.
They never said Mario was from Brooklyn. They never even said the city Donkey Kong was set in was New York or supposed to be a parody of it until Odyssey at best, which shows Mario clearly not only is not from even the Mario parody version of New York, but that he's arguably a completely different species from them. Anything connecting Mario to New York beyond Miyamoto going "yeah Brooklyn right makes sense because Martinet" is an NoA creation
