360 easily won its generation. It wasnt until they tried implementing the weird spy camera shit that Playstation bounced back.
So from 2006 to 2013 I'd say they mattered. Some people try and say ps3 caught up but that isnt true. Just look at the software sales
"Winning the generation" didn't amount to anything worthwhile for Microsoft aside from having a brief amount of success due to launching early and popularity behind the Halo franchise.
Meanwhile, on the Playstation 3, Sony created their brand new IP's like Uncharted and The Last of Us that carried into the Playstation 4. You had God of War 3 that was a massive success, Gran Turismo 5 that leaped over Forza 2 and Forza 3 visually, and you can argue Killzone at least visually helped carry the Playstation 3 and establish it was the dominant console visually.
The Xbox 360 stagnated in IP's and by the end of the consoles lifecycle, their marketing was a mess. They couldn't get Rare off the ground into anything successful besides Kinect Sports, Ninja Gaiden 2 launched in a terrible state, they lost second-party support with Team Ninja, Alan Wake had poor sales, and they lose Bungie as their flagship studio, and you had the RROD plaguing the consoles. Everything in the end for Microsoft was a colossal frick up right up to Kinect. They only started out okay due to Halo 3, being easier to develop for, and being cheaper.
Except the PS3 was a net loser for Sony, they burned through all of their combined profits from the PS1 and PS2. The thing never broke even.

Late Xbox into the entirety of 360 was probably one of the best eras of gaming. Also, Sony never had an answer to Halo 1-3 or Gears 1-3. Even to this day their first party development has never achieved such a phenomenon..

Yes, Xbox OG and 360 were actually innovative with console features never seen before.
The original Xbox had the best version of pretty much every multiplatform game and the 360 had the first competent online service. The console's success was the reason why Sony stepped away from proprietary hardware formats, and is the reason why the PS4 and PS5 uses off the shelf PC components instead of a weird processor that Japs love because it's has 500 cores
The Xbox controller also standardized controller interfaces for PC.
Before Xbox there were a million wacky controller shapes with anywhere from 4 to 30 buttons and PC games required you to define every key or choose from a list of controllers
