Was this the best Nintendo Direct in a long time? So many good announcements nobody was expecting.

Was this the best Nintendo Direct in a long time? So many good announcements nobody was expecting. This is just what we needed because the last year or so has been pretty barren in terms of games. Finally we're getting some good shit.

Xenoblade 3, Astral Chain or Metroid Dread.

XB3, Astral Chain and Dread are all must-buys if you're into their general genres (JRPG, Action game, Metroidvanias).
As for the rest, SMTV is very enjoyable if you want the JRPG equivalent of a post-rock soundscape album. No particular lyrics to create any comprehensible narrative, just sound and texture that feels good on your brain
Triangle Strategy is a pretty good TRPG

Not as good as the dorects leading up to the release of Xeno 3 and TotK, but the amount of Mario was a pleasant surprise, I just hope they iron out the kinks of Luigi's Mansion 2, I really want to replay that game but the excessive handholding puts me off.

Every direct is getting better and better because they're getting better at targeting games to their adult audience. More creativity, more complexity, less generic boring easy casual garbage.

  9. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

Not even close. It was the best Direct we've had in a while, but that's not saying much considering just how dismal the last few were. If you're not a Mariogay (like me) or a Pikmingay then you're probably SOL until next Direct. At least FEgays got cucked on their "inevitable" FE4make for another day. That's something I'm sure most people can agree to celebrate.

      Anonymous

There is no way FE4 is being remade, it is way too complicated for the modern FE coomer's brain.

If you mean scared Nintendo off from ever remaking the old games again because it was their biggest flop in years, then yes.

            Anonymous

Yeah, that's what I mean. Wasn't it like a Tellius tier flop?

              Anonymous

I think the difference with Tellius was Nintendo's standards for Fire Emblem sales were different back then, that's how Path of Radiance did well enough to justify a sequel. But compared to the new standard that Awakening and co. set, Echoes was certainly dire.
Not to say that either the Tellius games or Echoes are bad, mind you. Modern FE fans just prefer stupid waifu garbage where you marry anime girls.

Sort of off-topic. I got POR for Christmas. I let my friends brother borrow it. Never got it back. I seethe when I see POR mentioned.

                Anonymous

That is annoying how some people steal shit and just don't care, I had a friend who lent out his DLC disc for Fallout 3 because he had the GOTY edition and the others didn't, so he let them borrow it and install the DLC. And the last guy was a selfish dick who just never returned it, like he had it in his head that he was punishing him for taking so long to send it I guess? But it's like, he's letting you borrow it out of the goodness of his own heart and you have the audacity to be a dick and hang onto it because he wasn't timely enough for your tastes? And he never returned it in the end, even after years had passed. That guy was probably one of the biggest buttholes I ever met. And to think, all this over fricking Fallout 3.

At least with piracy being so easy, stuff like this isn't such a big deal anymore. Same with the POR thing, sucks that they stole it but you can always emulate it if you're in the mood to play it. Doesn't give them a pass for being an butthole but it means their buttholery is easily dealt with.

I’m just happy we’re finally moving on from the garbage that was TOTK. Pray we don’t see Zelda again for 4-5 years.

Its DLC is still on the way, anon. But I agree; since I no longer enjoying the direction Zelda's heading in, I will now dread Directs whenever Zelda info seems especially likely. At least I have some faith in the Mario IP again - I never thought THAT would happen.

I haven't bought Amiibos before but I'm picking up that Ganondorf Amiibo. Looks sick. Haven't even played the game, I just want a cool Ganondorf to put next to my figures.

Like what? Ports, remasters and a new 2D bing bing wahoo? Pikmin and Pokemon don't do much for me, personally. I was surprised they said nothing about Metroid Prime 4. Maybe it's delayed to be released with the next console.

  12. 11 months ago

It was alright but mostly if you're a Mario or Pikmin fan. Outside of that it was mostly stuff we'd seen before and the usual odd JRPGs, farming games and indie PC ports).

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon port could pave the way for some other 3DS games getting moved to console though so that's nice (especially on newer hardware if that's what Nintendo is now waiting on Metroid Prime 4 for).

    6/10 for me.

It was just okay. Least they can say they won "Not" E3 (again)

  16. 11 months ago
    Michlan

It isn't. If anything, it's proof of you having lower standards.
Other than the last Mario game, most of the games range from "Meh" to "interesting". Only Wonder was the latter.

    The remakes? Meh.
    Pikmin? Meh.
    Detective Pikachu? Meh.
The Pokemon game that lagged like shit? Meh.
Nothing really stood out to me. And it's kinda sad it's only what 40 minutes in the modst of E3 season where they usually have 1 hour directs.
    Also, where's Metroid 4?

      Anonymous

There seems to be a misconception. Lag is not the same thing as slowdown. Lag is when there's a problem with the internet connection and your actions "lag behind" your inputs. Pokemon's problem was a low framerate due to poor optimization. Which, don't get me wrong, is unacceptable in a franchise as big as Pokemon. I'd wager the game runs at 10fps in cities. It was ridiculous.

I'm seeing a lot of people say this and I have to ask if this is a boomer thing because of SMRPG.
I thought it was mediocre and seemed very "end of lifespan" tier for the Switch.

Boomer here: I would rather play the original, not the soulless remake.

Most Nintendo fans that aren't JRPG fans were desperate for anything Mario after a content drought of only spinoff sports titles and Mario Maker 2 so I could see why they're excited given the amount of Mario that was in the direct. If you want a realistic take on the Direct from a Nintendotuber, check out Shokio's response (he gave it a 4/10 for the same reasons you had and he also came in with low expectations).

        Anonymous

This is a good explanation for why this Direct was so well received. It had three major Mario related announcements (SMRPG, the Peach game, and Wonder) plus the Dark Moon port for people who care. Despite volume of releases Mario actually has not had many games that have excited people in quite a while. Add on the lack of Xenoblade or Fire Emblem plus Pikmin and it's no surprise Nintendo YouTubers love it.

      Michlan

      It does.
But the question is, when will Nintendo actually announce the next Switch? Historically they announce and launch consoles mid generation

        Anonymous

I think there's at least two years left in the Switch's life. Nintendo's been trying to drag out console lifespans a bit longer than average. 3DS lasted about 8 years as well. We're getting close, but we're not there yet.

They’re polishing MK9 and the next 3D mario. My guess is spring 2025.

Well I have fond memories of renting it multiple times when I was a kid and after 25 years I’m looking forward playing it again. Plenty of gen X will be playing it as well because the young adults frequently beat me to renting all the copies the store had. I didn’t soi over the announcement but I am happy about it.

It looks fine to me too, but I was hoping they'd put the original on NSO and I doubt that's going to be happening now when they've got a new game to sell. And yeah, I know I can just emulate it but I would have liked to have it on a handheld console. But oh well. I think I already have the rom downloaded on this computer so emulation is the way to go for me.

SMB Wonder is definitely the better looking one to me. The way the graphics almost look like a painting is really cool, I wish they'd gone with an artstyle more like that for the SMRPG remake instead of just "generic 3D Mario."
