theres good ways and bad ways to do it. The proper way to gatekeep and i suppose the definition would be to add some barriers to entry into any particular thing. Finetuning those barriers can be a bit difficult, but you definitely want some sort of filter there.

Gatekeeping became "a bad thing" when everyone was focused on inclusion, but the problem is thats also when everything become watered down and more about marketability than actual quality.

The entire point of gatekeeping is to make things a little bit difficult to get into so only the people that are truly interested in it stick with it and properly enter the space. Yes, communities were smaller, but they were also a lot more tight knit and focused. When anyone can just enter whatever community they want and start making demands and changes, the community never really takes off and just kind of flounders or dies. The products/projects stagnate because they have to be safe to appeal to everyone who hasnt put in any effort or work towards something, instead of focusing on and refining and elaborating on what made them great.

Inclusiveness is one of those things that sounds good, and is good to some extent - but things need a barrier to entry to filter out the people who are just going to hold things back.

        >would be to add some barriers to entry into any particular thing
How exactly do you do that when the thing you are attempting to gatekeep is 1) not your property 2) a mass market product.

Maybe you're too young to remember, but pretty much every hobby and forum had its form of gatekeeping. The easiest way was basically just not spoonfeeding new members. The info is out there, make them search to get it for the more surface level stuff.

In things like woodworking or car repair it was basically not telling people the info that was in the published repair manuals or magazines with blueprints. Gaming used to be similar - if there was a mechanic that was a bit rough to understand, but could be completely understood with time/trial/error from in game materials then you simply don't spoonfeed everyone who asks about "how to make OP character" or "how to solve puzzle" when most of them are pretty easy.

Yea, gaming has got to a point where its gonna be hard as frick because everything is about the money - but its not impossible to have more dedicated hardcore communities with mods or even smaller more hardcore games that actively fight back against "press x to awesome" or "use this build to win".

You're perfectly free to develop a friend group and keep undesired people out, honestly this whole gatekeeping talk is just friendless behavior from people who don't realize that most of internet relations are indeed private groups already.

          >friendless behavior
projecting much? Neither myself or my friends like seeing things we enjoy be watered down and neutered because a bunch of fricking casuals who want to get into a thing because its popular for a month or two then have the whole thing setback years because they're trying to cater to all the new people who cant put in any effort into learning shit.

yep. A lot of that is on the dev, and yea, its hard to blame them when ultimately they have to make money so the publisher doesnt frick with them.

We need a more nuanced approach. homosexuals in this VERY thread wanted the definition of the word spoonfed to them. It's fricking amazing how far brains have rotted over the span of the last 10-15 years.

its beyond disgusting to me how many people just dont even try shit anymore. So many people basically will do nothing anymore if someone wont do it for them. Not even hobbies, even basic life skills like fricking cooking. I really dont understand why people are so afraid to try things on their own instead of demanding exact stepbystep instructions with handholding or just straight up not even attempting it.

I'm genuinely interested in how this is achieved without being massive homosexuals about it. I remember some early internet communities flat out refused to document shit down, wiki it out, or do anything that would help concentrate information. Join the forums for a question, problem or any sort of troubleshooting shit and you have to play office politics for day or two, or in some cases weeks before some autist finally reveals that the solution, missing line in .dll or similiar is hidden in this dump of a forum thread or placed in the VIP side of the forum.
Necroing said thread gets you banned, creating a thread gets the thread locked with "Answered already" or something similiar and if you try to ask around you might just get flat out banned. I want to fix this fricking issue, find this tidbit or similiar, not interact with morons.
I would assume not going back to BBS era and dropping info collecting completely, but what's the alternative? Just dropping "maybe some barriers of entry need to be in place" doesn't really matter because depending on the severity of vaccination levels of the hobby, community or whatever, some of those are ridiculously tedious barriers which even fans won't go over. Sure, it might create safe havens for some marinara trench deep circlejerks but I don't think it's gonna be fruitful basis for any sort of barrier.
Just to be clear here, I don't think catering to room temp iq idiots will better the community, product or service, but being vague about what needs to be done is meaningless babble. I do know we live in a bit different era and in most cases simply googling the first keywords will reveal either the answer straight away or at least helps you forward, but still.

You cannot gatekeep a hobby controlled by multi national corporations who have a legal requirement to maximize profits. Any attempts would be quickly defeated by the company as they do not gain anything from you doing this. How are you going to "increase barrier of entry" when you have zero control over game difficulty or changes?
You are an ant going against a God. Trying to gatekeep video games is a fools errand. You can gatekeep shit that isn't controlled. Like fishing or jogging.

True. All gatekept things are better. But you’re just not going to be able to do that with a major media. You can create specific communities but video games in general is too broad to be gated.

Pinpoint who has power over the community. This can be official or non-official discussion forum, where most fans gather, or the product's appeal itself gathering community around its unique aspects. Convince those in power that there is an invasion taken place within the community, caused by their lacking usage of power to control the community. Define the invasion and set measures to remove and stop certain opinions being expressed within the community. This can be done by setting rules to forums, or by removing unique aspects from the game that appeal to the invaders. Continue setting restrictions and removing components until victory can be declared over the invasion attempt.

There was never any gatekeeping. Being dysgenic and repulsive was naturally off-putting.
Gatekeeping was invented by israelites who thought they struck gold by stumbling upon the "next big thing" and were afraid of "silo mentalities" forming of plotting conspiratorial types.

Most subculture enjoyers were, one step away from the asylum, one step away from homelessness, one step away from prison, one step away from suicide, etc.
      >my dad beats me so I play flight sims
      >I was molested so I watch anime
      >I'm a homosexual so i listen to punk and skate
      >my mom's a prostitute so I lift weights so i can beat up my stepdad
      >I'm too stupid at school stuff so I like guns and cars
      >I got tired of being bullied so I got into sports
      >I hate my life but I like my life when I do hard drugs and make music
      >I'm not allowed to have any fun so I read textbooks all day
      >I'm literally hallucinating but isn't it cool that we're all human beings
      >My first toy was a computer and I never grew up

What do all these people have in common? There's always a chad version of them in each of these sub-groups. The chad ends up bringing in women and secondaries who think it's cool to be an outcast freak. israelites see the big numbers and turn it into a trend, this trend gives even more morons false hope; that they will become "cool hacker man" or "mysterious edgelord" or "whimsical hipster man" by flooding the entire community with their exclusionary normalgay ways. The community becomes diluted and indistinguishable from everywhere else.

I think the only way is to not really talk about it or share much about it online. If you like something, best to keep it to yourself and only share only with close friends/loved ones. This rule especially holds true of special places (resturaunts, parks, etc.) and travel spots. Always significantly downplay how great it is so more people don't go to it.

Stupid question. No hobby has successfully been gatekept because men will let women into anything just to stop the nagging and accusations of sexism, misogyny and "boy's clubbing".

The only hobbies that are safe are the ones that women can't get attention from through joining, like fishing, hunting or bug collecting.

You can't gatekeep shit when there are so many morons who will let even more moronic morons in. And then you try to gatekeep but realize they're already on this side of the gate.

    >Gatekeeping
    A fricking meme.
Do you want to know how "geek" stuff was gate-kept? The sort of people that liked that shit were originally socially incompetent austismos, genetic refuse. The ugly, the socially maladjusted, the introverted losers.

Normalgays as you call them, being socially competent, usually gravitated towards highly social activities. Going to sports games, doing drugs with each other, going to concerts, doing social hobbies.
Playing videogames, playing tabletop games, model kits, watching anime, reading comics and manga.
These are all activities enjoyed by people with godawful social skills or other maladies because most of them can be done alone and they're things that just happened to not appeal to normalgays at the right spot in history.

I've gone to anime clubs in college, nobody there is ever attractive, nobody there is ever socially competent.
These hobbies used to filter normal gays because they were enjoyed by genetic trash. It is completely natural to feel hatred towards people who are genetic trash, it's more of a western cultural morality that has you reassess that those feelings are wrong or unfair.
For example. Why do people try to shelve away Downs children from society? Well because in nature a bunch of teenagers would probably beat them to death.

All this shit Ganker loves used to be contained because everybody was so autistic normalgays did not want to join you. But then Big Bang Theory came out and if you get attractive people to enjoy shit and use it as an excuse to socialize, normalgays will start doing it. When they do it, they do it hard enough to drown out the stereotypes so that the ugly cave troll autists don't have to be involved with them.

TL;DR Hot sociable people hate (you) and don't like what (you) like, but if enough of them start to like what you like they'll force you out.

I've been here for years, I'm just tired of pretending I'm superior for having "good tastes" compared to normal people.
The vast majority of society might be gullible drones but beauty always wins in the end.
        That's my conclusion.
I've been friends with complete normal people and lowly autists I have mild autism and feel comfortable around people with worse issues because it makes me feel normal.

The dichotomy is clear, if you're ugly and mentally ill you're going to have different hobbies from attractive people because you are excluded at an instinctual level. Most human behaviors of needlessly complicated exaggerations of very basic things. If were all less sapient, social behaviors probably wouldn't change all that much.

Ask yourself, why is it when you imagine some particular stereotype of "geek" shit you imagine the ugliest sperg possible?
The freckles, the allergies, the shit eyesight, the speech impediment, the buck teeth, the odd clothing indicating autistic preservation and lack of consideration for personal appearance.

They all come together into one simple answer, this man is genetic trash.

This. Companies also invest billions to make sure everyone at every corner of the earth will know and purchase their game. Gatekeeping was lost when AAA became the norm, now AAA is completely ran by investment companies like the big three that just makes things even worse.

Part of it is just the sheer amount of people who know about Ganker now. If even a small percentage of those homosexuals get through our gatekeeping methods, that's enough to permanently flood the site in homosexualry. The gatekeeping options available to us in the first place are very weak. This was inevitable. Ganker really was only good when it was a sekret club (which it was, no matter what anybody tells you)

Anon there's better examples than this. Using WH40k as an example is outing you as a moron. It ALWAYS made brutal fun of hyper masculinity and totalitarianism. The Skaven are a mockery of german soldiers being ratlike and violent.

Gay shit is completely in line with gayhammer. morons just missed the point of it and thought it was their heckin representation instead of sticking to based and redpilled tabletops like d&d 2nd edition or Nechronica.
