The new Monkey Island game is a lot more cubist with everything being an angle instead of the corpo stuff which is all curves.

As fricking hideous as the artstyle is, I take more issue with the fact that is obviously not because they thought it was the "right" style for the game but because it downplays the other artistic problem with this game: the animation.
Which I recognize is probably a budgetary problem - but it must be a huge one, because sure, proper 2d animation, even computer assisted, is expensive, but 3d animation is far less so. Did they really have THAT little of a budget allocated for this game's graphics that they had to resort to paper-puppet visuals? It was a clever move 10-15 years ago when that sort of look was uncommon, now it's painfully apparent as a desperate attempt to cover up penny pinching with a visually striking (take "striking" as literally as possible with no comment to personal taste or technical quality) style.

sometimes I think it's a bad thing the people behind the sonic movie redesigned his model because it made consumers think the average creative will actually listen and that this wasn't a stroke of sheer luck combined with said design not being a creative but a corporate decision to begin with in that one instance, and it made creatives far more bitter about the realization that their audiences know better than they do when it comes to their own visions sometimes.
What is funny is that these "games as art" types get so infuriated by criticism. Art is about criticism. Games will never "grow up" and "become art" with these types of people at the helm. They have such a 3rd graders view of art that its honestly fricking nuts. I have gravitated away from video games and into old films in recent years because its nice to actually intellectually engage with something of substance for once.
Just like how film is for people too stupid to appreciate literature, video games are for people too stupid to appreciate film. There are artful games, sure; Tetris, Abzu, Cuphead, etc.
But when you look at cinematic/story driven games, the absolute best of them only end up being half-decent compared to movies of the same genre.

A trend in the 80s when the song came out was "World Music" using random sounds, instruments, or styles from different 'exotic' places and using them in more mainstream American pop.

sometimes I think it's a bad thing the people behind the sonic movie redesigned his model because it made consumers think the average creative will actually listen and that this wasn't a stroke of sheer luck combined with said design not being a creative but a corporate decision to begin with in that one instance, and it made creatives far more bitter about the realization that their audiences know better than they do when it comes to their own visions sometimes.
What is funny is that these "games as art" types get so infuriated by criticism. Art is about criticism. Games will never "grow up" and "become art" with these types of people at the helm. They have such a 3rd graders view of art that its honestly fricking nuts. I have gravitated away from video games and into old films in recent years because its nice to actually intellectually engage with something of substance for once.
Just like how film is for people too stupid to appreciate literature, video games are for people too stupid to appreciate film. There are artful games, sure; Tetris, Abzu, Cuphead, etc.
But when you look at cinematic/story driven games, the absolute best of them only end up being half-decent compared to movies of the same genre.

A trend in the 80s when the song came out was "World Music" using random sounds, instruments, or styles from different 'exotic' places and using them in more mainstream American pop.

Ron didn't want to repeat an artstyle he had done before, and he didn't want to do a retro pixel art thing.
He liked the look of that vector cubism thing, and chose that for a new look.
Also the main art guy behind Monkey Island 3 died, so he couldn't get him again
Throwback vector cubism isn't even that bad of an idea. LeChuck looks really cool in this style. The issue is everything else has a distinctly corporate art style about it that's not only been driven into the ground, but has already been done to death.

It's amazing. The first game was literally the first game I played ever and still one of my favorites. Normally a new Monkey Island game would be a day 1 purchase, maybe even a pre-order. But now because of the art style and everything else I see is going to make me wait.
