Seriously, why is everyone constantly talking about buying or looking forward to any new game when you can download the entire PS2 and Gamecube collections and you are set for a lifetime of vidya?

There is no SSD benefit when it comes to those classic games.
Your loading times won't get better than they are on a modern HDD. If you put everything on SSD exclusively you are wasting space and money.

HDDs are still cheaper than SSDs so they are preferable for media that doesn't benefit from the speed of SSDs.

They're also purely built for archival purposes and have shit speeds, cache, and IO integrity. Overall a 2024 HDD will perform worse than one from 2000. It's only useful for storing shit like 8 and 16 bit era roms. Anything classic PC game that attempts to stream data from it will hiccup because it's expecting a HDD designed for it. Same if you try to stream a 1080p video from one.

I would recommend against doing this, just download the games you want. Most of those libraries are shovelware you'll never want to play.

Still, there are a lot of great games that can easily last you for decades. There is no reason to buy an indie game that rips gameplay from them off in the first place.

Indie games often take concepts from games that the developers grew up with or liked, yes. But they are rarely ever carbon copies. The most successful indie games that are like this I can think of are:
Stardew Valley (Harvest Moon), Cuphead (Contra/Metal Slug), Shovel Knight (Mega Man), Hollow Knight (Metroidvania), Disco Elysium (cRPGs from the 80s/90s)...
All of these games heavily borrow from their inspirations, but add a different mechanical twist on the idea, expand upon it, or bring their own style/setting to the table.
Granted, some genres are worse off than others. There's a slew of indie JRPG games out there that do not innovate in any way aside from having the creator's super awesome OCs as the main cast.

I agree with your overall post, but I wouldn't call Shovel Knight a Mega Man inspired game. Maybe Gravity Circuit is a better example. Also, others may not agree, but if a series I liked was dormant for years, then I don't care if it's taken inspiration from other games.

This is why Pizza Tower blew up. It appealed to both Wario Land and Classic Sonic fans. The day that somebody actually correctly manages to capture the wonder of Pikmin, it's over for me. (Pikmin 4 was pretty good though I won't lie)

Because normalgays don't actually care about videogames, they just want to jump on trends, hot memes and feel like they're "part of a group" and not missing out on something hot. The idea of playing something older than a year or two is insane to them, especially if it's something that never went hugely "viral". Notice all the "OMG THIS NEEDS A REMAKE" posts on all old games you'll find on youtube - even though normies could play all these games right now, it's still unimaginable for then to play anything that isn't "new" so they'll only ever play old games if they get a "remake" or re-release.

Indies still fill in rare niches or offer different ideas, point what classic game Crypt of The Necrodancer ripped off in particular. Also sometimes indies do a better job, for example Stardew Valley mogs most harvest moon games.

objectively yes. entertainment is meant to be enjoyed by people. if one piece of media appeals to the overwhelming majority of people then that entertainment is the best.

If the game wants to advertise, then the 1-2 months leading up the release of that game and the 2 weeks after its release are pretty meaningless as far as discussion goes. Most of the engagement is entirely artificial and produced by bots and shills and it only becomes worthwhile to discuss after the money for shilling has run out and the newbies have stopped trying to fit in or produce their own entertainment by echoing the shills.

The opinions of people are heavily mutable, they want what they are told to want, they enjoy the things that they perceive as being enjoyed by others.
          >They're all sheep, said the sheep
I'm not excluding myself from that.

Despite the naysaying of many people, video games right now are in a better place than they were 10 years ago. Good games have always been coming out, but I think the amount of good and varied stuff that's coming out today is much higher than what we had between 2012-2020. These last few years have had fantastic offerings.

More of these big budget games are now taking forever to come out, they take like 4-5 years to come out. Also it's funny you posted AC6 when it's a step down from VD and it's previous game.

This is true. I think the biggest loss we've had in modern games is the falloff of the "double A" developer. There are still a few left, D3 is still making kickass EDF games, but we just don't get mid budget games like we used to. It's either low budget indie or 4 billion dollar AAA game.

    >play vidya for decades
    >refined taste and interests in specific genres and subgenres
    >good complex games from those genres that scratch the itch
    >play the genres top of the tops games like Morrowind, Homm3, R:TW, Quake 3, PES 6, Civilization 2, WoT, EU4, Kotor 2, Unreal, Medal of honor, Age of empires, etc..
    >start going trough sequals and other games in respective series such as Oblivion, Homm5, Medieval 2 TW, Quake 2, Civilization 4, PES 2010, WT, Kotor, Unreal 2 the awakening, call of duty, Age of empires 2, etc.
    >after that go trough the other sequals and rivals like Dagerfall, Gothic, Kings bounty, Alhpa centauri, Shogun 2, pes 2012, etc.
    >after that start playing obscure and mediocre games in the genres
At some point you played so many clones and new "spiritual successors" to all those and you try neighboring and tangential genres and then you are out of games to play.
Like theres only so much RTS games that are worthwhile to play and learn their mechanics. Same goes for most other genres.
Warzone 2100 is a great game I loved but does that make me want to play Supreme Commander? Not really, tried it, wasnt my cup of tea.

it's sad that no one takes risks and try to create something truly unique and new
the only reason why i'm hopeful to kunitsu-gami being good is that it looks like it's finally a game that is trying something new
