I'm using Windows 10. I still hate that the DNA of Windows 8 is in it and that the taskbar still isn't actually the same as the taskbar from before that. It's a separate process running on top of Windows Explorer instead of being part of it. Sometimes the taskbar in 10 will crash and restart itself and freeze for a few minutes and I can't do anything. Sometimes searching in the start menu just doesn't work and the menu just closes as soon as I type anything. It sucks, but it's better than 8, 8.1, and 11.

Have you turned off web-based results in the start menu? There's a registry edit you can make that will speed it up a bit.
This doesn't stop the ads, it just hides them. You can only disable the ads with that registry key AND a group policy in combination. Otherwise the ads are still loading and they're still tracking you, you just don't see their widget.

8 and 8.1 had improvements to multi-threaded workloads and was lighter overall, but the UI was fricked. 10 also had kernel improvements but again fricked UI with more spyware.
11 has improvements too but took 2 years to unfrick their regressive UI changes and you still can't move the taskbar because "users don't actually want that".
I have a Windows 10 system right now, and 7 was the last time the OS was good. One of the worst things Windows has done with the editions after that was the shift towards designing the UI to resemble smartphones. It's incredibly dumb because now Windows has some redundant menus like the settings app which is just a dumbed down control panel. On top of that the OS is now bloated with a bunch of junk that reports back to Microsoft, and there's ads in your start menu.

Windows 7 was a polished version of Vista (which was a major improvement to XP). 10/11 are leaps and bounds better than 7 in many ways but has some extremely annoying concessions you have to make.

It could run on any hardware since it was so lean, it was compatible with every piece of software ever made on NT, the UI was intuitive and pleasing, there was very little need of tinkering or troubleshooting, there was no weird shit under the hood, and back then there was quality testing so updates breaking stuff was not commonplace.
It also coincides with what many people consider the golden age of PC gaming, so for them Win7 = good games

NTA but it sounds like you need a driver or firmware update. 10 LTSC always does that unless you're on the latest latest version.
10 auto updated everything besides my audio driver, which was kinda iffy. It probably is the gpu driver, which I have to dedicate a chunk of time to rollback to find a stable version.
I would not trust the auto update to choose the right driver for your hardware automatically especially if it is old. I would check a program like Process Lasso and see if there's a CPU bottleneck in either the GPU or CPU and consider updating your Mobo's firmware

I prefer having more direct control and less forced automation in my OS, but I'm not autistic enough to learn and use Linux. I prefer control panel to settings, I prefer getting to choose specifically what updates I download and install and WHEN I do it. I prefer the overall GUI of Windows 7 to anything that came after. I also like having the Group Policy Editor on regular editions without having to upgrade to something like Professional. I also prefer Windows 7 because some older games that I have CDs for do not work on 10 or 11. Windows 8 and onwards has simply been a case of fixing what wasn't broken. Sure, 10 and 11 have some good features and support things that a lot of modern games use and they are faster and safer, I'll give them that. That's why I have both a Windows 10 and 7 PC so keep both bases covered.
Windows 11 is fricking horrific though. I don't care that some of my gripes (like interface) can be solved with third party software.

Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition through Steam using Proton. Game ran a few times, then suddenly stopped running. Running latest version of Ubuntu, all on AMD hardware I just bought a few months ago. Brand new SSD's and everything. All hardware tests pass 100%. Uninstalled and reinstalled the game, never updated Ubuntu or let it update anything, there was no reason the game stopped working, but it did. Neither steam support or Ubuntu support had any answers, just "mAyBe Ur hArDwArE iS bAd?" Wiped off Ubuntu, put Win10 on there, everything works perfectly now. And nothing on Win10 has suddenly stopped working out of nowhere.

It doesn't auto install any drivers you have to have those ready to install after you reach the desktop. It's your job to know exactly everything you need. If you're missing something don't expect a hand hold.
