Tevi's combat is a straight upgrade, but I have to disagree with David there that the new artstyle worked in its favor. Character designs are full of useless details, orbs, hands, belts, etc, they're really busy.
Tevi herself is the only design that I particularly liked, mainly because she has a defined theme (engineer rabbit) and it shows through some little details (like her goggles or her tool purse)

I checked most of the Steam negative reviews. None of them really talk about the shift in the art design, and rather lament that the story and dialogue are shit. Plus they complain that this isn't Rabi-Ribi 2

There was one guy who did say,
    >For the people who's brains automatically associate attractive imaginary women = porn, then I guess this game would be better for you than rabi-ribi. The art style was nice and consistent
But that was it. Take a look: https://steamcommunity.com/app/2230650/negativereviews/?browsefilter=toprated&snr=1_5_100010_

The story truly was a big mess. They expected you to feel sad for some ugly robot you met 2 minutes ago. Then it forces you to go search for the mcguffins in a specific order, differently from RR. Then it goes full shounen and shoves 2 twin princesses at your face and an ancient evil at the end

Anyway, I hate dead ends bullshit the most in video games these days, to the point that it kills any desire to explore modern games in general and I don't even play AAA garbage, I've been tired of this bullshit since 7th gen.

How hard would it be to reward the fricking exploration instead of making shitty and pointless dead ends? There were many games that both had dead ends and interesting locations with loot or whatever, so I simply can't comprehend why it's so difficult for the devs to do some level design variety instead of creating this cheap and fake level design complexity. Just make it linear so I wouldn't waste my time on doing nothing, you fricking lazy hacks, if you can't do your fricking job properly, at least that would be honest.

Ironically, they're alienating the fans who made their game relatively successful to begin with. By no longer appealing to that core audience, they have made a game that's not really for anyone at all.

It rather sounds like they want to appeal to yet another non-existent 'western audience'.

      Anonymous

Exactly. This seems like a game that isn't meant for anyone. They went too broad in their attempts to appeal to more people, and to me it looks like the message they are trying to send their core fans is: "We don't need you anymore. I don't care what made us popular or successful, we are not doing that again, so go find something else to play."

That isn't relevant but I thought on it more and even though the peak was never surpassed, it doesn't mean only 693 players ever existed, the rest just came in under peak from then on. Why age is irrelevant is because some streamer could come in and easily pump it above that peak. Anyway, using the peak number doesn't greatly detract from Rabi-Ribi's overall success because it has more overall purchases. Though one could say Tevi is more successful as it has a bigger initial with 8 years to fill.

That's based on people playing at the exact same time. Which is why this is moronic. Rabi-Ribi was a new thing and so it got it's niche cult classic popularity over the years rather than immediately. So the players were spread out. Tevi capitalized on all the people who enjoyed Rabi-Ribi, so it had a (relatively) huge burst of immediate sales compared to Rabi-Ribi.

Tevi has the problem of trying to pander to people of the west, problem is, if a western player want to play a western game they won't play the pseudo-sequel of Rabi-Ribi but a western game. not counting that the west is fricking gigantic so you can't pander everyone.

I liked some parts of tevi but honestly it just wasn't as good as rabi ribi. The music wasn't as good, the dialogue wasn't as soulful, character designs weren't as good... map was WAY too big with nothing in it.. eh. Rabi-ribi was just a 10/10 so it's hard to compare.

The lack of hot characters really didn't help the game though. The story did nothing for me.

  29. 4 months ago
    Anonymous

Yeah, the story was decidedly mediocre so that's a strike. The gameplay was an objective upgrade, I don't know who would argue otherwise. The sheer amount of options (too many in the case of damage negation, you got me there) makes it way more dynamic to play even if the optimal strategy, at least in my playthrough, is to hardline either physical (small bosses) or ranged (large bosses). Still, gameplay is great. Exploration sucked because there weren't any hidden techs to my knowledge, meaning it felt much more bog standard compared to Rabi-Ribi where even finding a single hidden tech basically opened an entire section of the game for you early on. And the artstyle. The portraits are god awful, but the CGs were for the most part pretty fine. I don't actually know what the hell happened that made the most common look at characters so dogshit, but that's the impression everybody's going to live with unfortunately.
I'd still say it's definitely worth playing, at a discount of course, but maybe skip the story and go straight to Free Play if it ain't your thing.

      Anonymous

The only thing that's bad about Tevi now that it's at patch 1.03 are:
      1. The story. That can't ever be patched out or fixed but at least Free Roam Mode exists and is now available from a fresh file.
      2. Brittle tiles. But I'm pretty sure the devs will address this issue since literally everyone complains about it on forums and they've shown a willingness to change things based on feedback.
Pretty much every other gameplay issue people had with the game on launch has already been fixed. Potion scaling mode in particularly is basically RR's alternative mode equivalent. Mid-game to late-game bosses have been rebalanced. The game is now way harder and engaging than it was on launch (even if you don't apply modifiers like aggro bosses or turbo mode or elite enemies, which makes it even harder if you actually do).

What pisses me off about the story is that the basic premise and setting actually have potential.
But the writer just kept on introducing and dropping characters (like Vassago and Memloch just completely disappear from the story after they show up as bosses).
That robot character who wanted to be a chef was introduced and then killed like 10 seconds later and we're supposed to feel bad about the character? And that ending was so insanely rushed.
Which is part of the reason why I have a hunch the story was the very last thing that was added to the game. A big chunk of the dialogue/event scenes don't even have any music, which was probably because of this last-minute nature of the story and writing.

        Anonymous

Putting aside that the art is still dog shit and that isn't going to change, I don't think free roam existing stops the story mode from being a problem. Rabi-Ribi had story and that story facilitated the gameplay where you could explore freely, you could have both. In Tevi you have to choose between story or freedom of exploration, you can't have both. That's a huge point against Tevi because it's basically asking you to play it once in the shitty linear story mode and then play it again in free roam whereas Rabi-Ribi just gave you both the story and the freedom at the same time.

          Anonymous

          >because it's basically asking you to play it once in the shitty linear story mode and then play it again in free roam
You're gonna replay RR and Tevi multiple times anyway. RR to unlock Hell and then again to unlock Bunny Extinction (and then again to beat Bunny Extinction), Tevi to unlock Infernal BBQ (and then again to beat Infernal BBQ).

You're missing the point. Rabi-Ribi isn't a shit experience the first time you play it.

              >Rabi-Ribi isn't a shit experience the first time you play it.

              Neither was Tevi.
Even with my problems with the clunky story and dialogue playing through the game on Expert for the first time on launch day, I thought it was a fantastic and exceptional experience.
And if you're gonna say I'm wrong and that it's actually a "shit experience the first time you play it", then I have no reason to engage with you anymore.

kek, lmao even. And his response is on point, I recommended RR to so many people and every single one of them told me the designs were dogshit. That's how you make games, people tell you the designs are shit, you change them. That's how you run a company, that's how capitalism works, that's how life works.
And if you were into RR for the designs, get filtered. You were the real tourists all along.

for me it was lack of enemy diversity. every area in rabi ribi had it's own themed enemies and attack patters and tevi had the same couple of bad guys everywhere and maybe one or two new enemy per area. rabi ribi would also throw at you many bosses and mini-bosses but with tevi they went with arguable-quality over quantity

The gameplay is fun, but the danmaku, music, and sequence breaking were my favorite parts of RB, and Tevi flunked pretty bad on these.

      >music
this is true, the game severely lacks having its own brawl breaks/exotic laboratory/get on with it

Rabi-Ribi was bright, cheerful and fun before anything else. TEVI is browner Rabi-Ribi. Dull environments, less fun characters.

      yeah
rabi ribi felt like a Dreamcast game. tevi feels like a ps3 game.

In fairness, where do you go with a Rabi Ribi sequel? Like what can you use for new bosses in the same vein? We already have an alraune, a succubus and an ancient Egypt princess babe, what's left without feeling like a downgrade?

I will say, there are some bosses that I need to redo. Mainly the big ones. Once you figure out that "projectile spam = HP melt" then big bosses especially become trifles. The melee badges are the most fun for sure, but I'd wager the MP Spam ones are the most powerful.

The fact they added a bunch of males characters should give you a hint of what they meant by "wider audience".

Yeah..Thats the one that always fricks over these GAMES.
Like fricking hell man, I dont mind story segments but when they think ushering in a story will make things better they always railroad the shit out of it making it a drag or a sense of "I need to finish the story before I can actually play".
