I really mourn the non-digital world, those of us born in roughly early 1980s got to see both sides right on the brink of adulthood and man, it was better before.

stuff like looking up books in a library was just better. people who cared about knowledge were obviously and apparently smarter, now everyone knows everything. of course they do, it's right here on the phone.

humanity was not ready for this and we are, in fact, probably not supposed to be here at all and accidentally got access to the idea of transistors.

we are supposed to be in a comfy vacuumpunk era right now, where the fastest computer, which takes up an entire room, just reached the speed of a DEC PDP-1.

Wrong. 6 is very well-liked. It was the best-selling FF in Japan until 7. What's actually interesting is the FF5 is considered very highly in Japan, and sold basically the same amount as 6 over there. Over here it's considered a "black sheep", just because it didn't get released.

When the devs for ff16 kept answering that FF5 was their favourite FF or top 3 favourite ff game I kept wondering what the frick were they smoking.
I'm not saying it's a bad game but it has a tiny presence outside Japan, maybe that was them trying to encourage JP players, but it stood out to me for how strange it was.
I saw the Director, the combat director, and a few other devs all quote FF5 as their favourite.

It's one of the only FF games to offer you a non-paltry amount of customization so it'll definitely be a lot of people's favorites if they can appreciate that.
That said it's super funny to hear it coming from the XVI devs considering how their game turned out.

            Anonymous

Yeah, I thought so in retrospect did they really say that giving the customization is pretty much non-existant in ff16. I hope they fix that with future dlc as after playing Strangers of Paradise, although the action in that game is ok, and the levels are very linear, I really enjoyed the gearing.

        >Over here it's considered a "black sheep", just because it didn't get released.
Obviously it's not considered a black sheep, that's not an actual opinion that people have. It's that some ignorant, moronic people saw the fact it didn't get localized and badly misinterpreted it as "GAME BAD" with zero context or desire to look further into it.
Then this gets perpetuated and from that point it's like a game of telephone because people are fricking morons-- you end up with some ignorant, regurgitated, second-hand nonsense that gets treated as "the consensus" when it actually couldn't be further from the truth.
What I'm trying to say is that opinions like that are so obviously invalid and detached from reality that even acknowledging them is pointless.

      Anonymous

That's an exaggeration that partly came to be because of an old, mediocre fan translation romhack. But Kefka is kind of liked more in America because the English translation makes him more like the Joker, while in the Japanese script he's more obviously mentally insane and rapidly switches between being an emotionless, calculating psychopath and a manic, stupid manchild, and he doesn't really do any quips or one-liners. He's considered a good villain by the Japanese fanbase, but he's considered more hateable and not really fun to watch.

More specifically, it takes a lot from DragonQuest, which took a lot from western RPGs like Wizardry and Akalabeth/Ultima, and those were basically the first games to successfully translate D&D to games.

i have no idea what you're talking about but in general foreign media should be translated as close to the original intent as possible, which may involve some minor localization changes to convey meaning but should not include changes to the writer's actual intent

That's a pretty wrong assessment. Even if you take out all the obvious abridging, there's a bunch of inaccuracies in the script.

Which mostly had to do with the fact that he had 30 days to do a translation. The first 15 days was spent on the initial translation, which turned out to be far too much dialogue to fit in the constraints of the memory, since much more can be said with fewer Japanese characters than English letters. It taking so long was because the programmers sent him the script out of order, and he had to spent quite a bit of time figuring that out.

The last 15 days was doing two more re-writes to get everything to fit, which is absurd when you think about. All this, mind you, after he went to the trouble of translating FFV, which they didn't even use at the time.
