I think the only real issue is that Netflix thought it was great idea to split a single season into three fricking seasons.
I went in expecting it to be a more detailed story of the game. Them getting conned into beating bosses for souls, but it was just wacky adventures of Cuphead and Mugman. It's not bad but not great either. More of something to watch if you have time to kill.
I was hoping it would be like looney toons. And honestly for the style its not that its computer animated, its that it looks nothing like old cartoons at all.

It wasn't that bad tbh, feel like Gankertards just didn't like it cause it didn't have the entirely unrealistic-to-achieve style. It was better then most cartoons, the Devil and King Dice were still the most enjoyable characters in it.
It's a fine cartoon. But for the same reason why you wouldn't watch new Looney Tunes, is the same reason why I'm probably not gonna watch the next season. The appeal is the old art style, and just like new Looney Tunes, you can just tell it's that newer style. The game is super appealing cause it's like a scene straight from the old cartoons.

I think even without traditional animation they could have leaned more into other aspects of 30s animation. None of the surrealism and risque-ness is really there, they shouldn't have aimed it towards kids.

It's an okay kid's cartoon (though the redesigns are quite ugly in my opinoin), but it's not Cuphead. Ideally it would have been spearheaded by a studio that's as passionate about golden age animation quality, style, and techniques as MDHR was, even if it means just getting a few seven-minute shorts instead of a full season. Netflix blew millions of dollars on that Green Eggs and Ham show so it could have great animation, I don't see why it couldn't happen for a more traditional cartoon.
It took them 5 years to animate like 20 seconds of footage per boss. Even putting out 7-minute shorts would be a herculean task. Not to disparage the game or anything because it is amazing, but the fact of the matter is that the old masters who spearheaded western animation in the early 1900's are long gone and modern artists can't match their quality or how quickly they were able to work. The people who make stuff like Cuphead weren't handed down techniques from expert artists but rather picked up on the style through observation and imitation. An entire generation of amazing artists are just gone and will never come back.
Those old masters were way way more people working on a project than the Cuphead team, that's also a factor
Things like Cuphead aren't made because it's easy to make them, they're made because something in our spirit compels us towards quality works. I understand it's a trying endeavor, that's why I'm saying it would be fine if they could only come out with a few seven-minute shorts in two years, when a studio like Fleischer could pump out 38 in just one year (1932). It's not as if we could never rediscover their techniques through effort and experimentation and even improve them. All it takes is for people to genuinely try, true progress towards efficient production of high quality animation will inevitably be made, new mastery will develop.

And for what it's worth I think Cuphead and its devs are taking that first step. Chef Saltbaker had some of the best animation i've seen in years even comparing it to Disney's animated efforts from decades ago. And that shit was animated on ONES.
In a perfect timeline, Studio MDHR is the beginning of the rennaisance of handdrawn, western animation and lighthearted fun with great quality.

Fleischer shorts make up for the lack of traditional humor by being extremely entertaining in other ways, the surrealism, the fluid animation, the songs and rotoscoped dancing, just try watching Swing You Sinners or Old Man of the Mountain and not being captivated for the entire 8 minutes
Great game. Just finished getting 300% today. Don't care about getting S ranks tbh, but I did do everything as Cuphead and nothing as Chalice. The King's Gauntlet with Cuphead isn't fun though.
Favorite bosses? Moonshine Mob for me, probably.
The design of the Rook fight started to make sense only when I played it as Chalice. Those angles for the heads fricking suck as Cuphead
The Rook was also very odd to me as well because, oftentimes, the heads weren't anywhere remotely safe to parry a second or so time to actually hit the Rook.
Honestly, I only really felt like the Bishop and Queen were ok for playing as Cuphead. The other pieces genuinely seemed more geared towards Chalice in some way or another, which was truly annoying.

I dont think youre "supposed" to play as anyone. Once I learned the startup animations the knight wasnt too bad. Maybe the dodgeroll with Chalice makes it easier but I learned his attacks just by jumping with Cuphead

There's no way the knight is designed with Cuphead in mind. You can get 2-3 parries as Ms. Chalice in situations where Cuphead struggles to get one.

Is the cursed challenge worth it? From what I have been reading about it, it really seems too RNG heavy for the divine relic to be that reliable.
It's worth it because it's not that hard and it counts for percentage. You start with 1 HP but can parry to get some back. Just do a few Isle 1 bosses and some of the easier Isle 3/4 bosses (Cala, Werner, and Esther for me)
Divine relic is OP as frick for plane fights.

Esther Winchester is pretty easy to S-rank. Only the first phase has a hard-ish pattern. The rest are easy and give you free parries.

a lot of that noise you hear her make at the start that sounds like she witnessed something most unorthodox.
Suprisingly easier on expert for some reason. In phase 2, she only summons one magic triangle/sphere at a time. Otherwise basically the same.
Use chaser/crackshot in final phase
Probably the only fight where the Lobber is essential.
You can skip phase three entirely if you get the rhythm down by holding only a couple of shots of damage to bait her into her next attack animation, unload into her once she's locked into the attack, and then dropping as many Lobber EX shots as possible straight down the center with the proper timing to hit her as soon as she returns for phase 3.

Do the health talismans make getting the remaining HP bonus easier? Or are they just for shitters who can't clear the stages, and the HP bonus actually counts not remaining HP, but the number of times you got hit?
health bonus counts how much health you have left on clearing the stage. This helped many S rank dice because you get extra hearts during that stage
this is also why parry ring is the go to for scrubs since it effectively doubles your health at no cost unlike the heart charms
Also why chalice can get the full health bonus even after taking a hit

My personal ranking for difficulty, mind you this is on Expert.
Grim Matchstick is pretty hard but Saltbaker is definitely on a whole nother tier. I can beat Grim with Peashooter only, with Saltbaker I at least have to use Ms. Chalice
Grim is one of the few bosses that's arguably harder with Crackshot due to hitting those damn balls of fire which makes them spread out.

i'd put snow cult down to b honestly, fridge phase is spicy but first and final are pretty manageable so long as you don't choke
Saltbaker is only hard in his first phase. It's a rough first phase, but the fight gradually gets easier and easier the later into the phases you get
Someone else told me the dragon was their hardest s rank and I just dont get it. I mean it was reasonably tough, but if you just farm phase 1 for parries, lobber phase 2, then ex spam/charge spam as normal for phase 3 its not thaaaat bad
The worst ones for me were the fricking plane stages... god i fricking hate them for s ranks, never doing it without ms chalice or life ring again
i found expert Grim easier than regular grim due to the clouds being easier to deal with.
in general grim matchstick is that one boss that "clicks" with me, i died very little against him. Same with the giant, everyone says how hard he is but i S-ranked him first try
i'd say cala maria is on a different level simply for how many potential attack patterns she can have and some are extremely tricky to avoid. You can sort of play around bad platform placement, but you really can't do anything about what random attack you'll get.
Same with Bon Bon since her first three phases are straight up randomized.

Brineybeard on Expert with the Peashooter only is fricking surprisingly hard. Under any other conditions I'd consider him easy and kind of forgettable, but with that combination he's like the second hardest boss after Saltbaker

King Dice is bugged with it, but you can use the bug to get the Hearty achievement
HOW?
I think it's equip twin heart, activate genie, go into King Dice fight and beat the first boss you fight without taking damage, it'll show your health as being back down to 5, then roll onto a heart and you get the achievement. I think. Haven't done it in a while
What worked for me:
>enter with cheat active and twin heart for 9 hp
>start a fight, #2 is easiest
>get hit, finish with 8 hp
>get back, ignore heart counter
>roll to a hp up spot, should get it then
Going for S rank really makes you get a deeper appreciation for the boss design. Esther is o e of the best bosses in the game. Glumstone foes to shit after the first phase. I don’t get how they completely ruined the aesthetic of the boss that quickly.

When each puppy goes under 80% health, there's a sound effect and the smoke from their jetpacks changes from white to grey. Do this to all 4 puppies without killing them and you get a secret 3rd phase where Saluki and her puppies try to kill you woth granades instead of rotating the screen

Arcades made a name for themselves by designing games that are short if you’re able to beat them. but will incentivize many replays and a lot of spent cash if you struggle with them or want to get a high score.

That actually looks pretty good for phase 1, may try it when its time to s rank him
crackshot is so much better. You really have to get used to twist-up's fricked up aiming to get a good time on phase one, and more often than not he will put himself in a bad spot for you so you can't hit him with every projectile. And, regarding my challenge in particular, in phase two, every time you have to face the opposite direction of the boss you have to stop firing because any stray bullet can kill a pink popsicle as it spawns from the far upper corner of the screen, effectively killing your chances at getting three parries. Then the last phase is just a big frick you because you can't hit him at all without taking huge risks, while at the same time the phase is almost as long as the previous two combined.
Surprised no one has caught on that Twist Up is probably the worst weapon in the game as of now. I haven’t even seen a single person use or mention it. Tried it against Howling Aces thinking it would be useful but the angle it fires in is just so damn unwieldy. Definitely the new challenge run weapon

nah double jump is based for the homosexual jumping fire fricker second phase
I can agree with the plane levels, but the double jump makes positioning a lot easier, dodge roll gives you a limited smoke bomb that is still useful, the dash parry is better most of the time though admittedly sucks in some cases, and you can get hit once and still get a S Rank.

Smoke Bomb and Spread are priority.
If you have the DLC, get Crackshot and Converge. if not, get Charge. Lobber is also useful for the dragon which is the hardest boss of Isle 2
i've got spread as first thing cos it seemed to make things easy and i switch between weapons to do as much damage as i can but super on that weapon sucks ass

Killing adds and minions with spread is a very useful tactic for a first playthrough since they dont have too much hp on normal
while you're on that map do the run n gun levels without shooting anything
