Nostalgia is a hell of a disease. The OG was mediocre, all it had going for was Wonka (who is nothing like the book) and the Imagination song. Everything else is a step down from the Tim Burton movie.

        Anonymous

I will say I liked the songs in Tim Burton's movie, but I much preferred the more whimsical nature of the OG.
I feel like as well the mid 2000s CG hampered a lot of the experience of Burton's as well as the set pieces being too sterile. From what I remember, it was shot pretty well so there's that too.
If it were made now, I think I would enjoy it a lot more, but as it is, I can't stand looking at it, which is a shame because I really do like Burton's films.

          Anonymous

The OG does feel more whimsical even when in retrospect looks very cheap.
          Official Ganker ranking of OG and Burton Wonka movies;
OG factory vibe > Burton factory vibe
          OG Wonka > Burton Wonka
          OG Charlie > Burton Charlie
          Burton kids > OG kids
          Burton parents > OG parents
          Burton grandparents > OG grandparents
          Burton songs > OG songs
Burton Oompa Loompas > OG oompa Loompas
Said that, the new Wonka movie did the best oompa loompa and is overall a better movie than the two predecessors. But the songs are the weakest point of the movie.

Having physical sets instead of an endless series of gigantic, looming cgi demo screens gives a pretty major edge to the original. Also the "different genre for each song" thing didn't land.

          >also the "different genre for each song" thing didn't land.
It did, it has the best songs from all the three movies. You know what doesn't land? Have the Oompa loompas sing the same shitty song 4 times in a movie.

was that supposed to be a gotcha because I posted a meme?

Burton's captures the book far better (which is the only reason the Dahl estate even allowed him to make it in the first place), but far more people only ever experienced the original movie, so of course their nostalgia for that outweighs anything else. I don't particularly hate the Gene Wilder version, but he came across like an butthole adult instead of the whimsical, porcelain doll like man who never really grew up from the book. I'll also never understand why they omitted that Grandpa Joe used to work at the factory.

Which pisses me off because people keep shitting on Burton's movie just because isn't like the flop they grew up with, the OG didn't even do well in theaters or critically, Dahl dishonored the movie, he hated Gene's Wonka and vowed to never adapt his works again.
it survived because of TV reruns.

The first one was great though.
And the cartoon was surprisingly better than any of the sequels, though mainly because it actually respected the first movie (For one the veternatian was one of the main characters) while also doing it's own things.

came here to post this. I believe even a few of the songs are word for word from the book. still, it's funny how the book so succinctly describes Wonka and not a single adaptation can get him right.

The Burton film is extremely faithful to the source material and it's shit because the source material is shit.

The book version was an butthole and Dahl specifically said he didn't like Wilder's performance because he made Wonka seem more like a parental figure.

No. The old filming on live sets like Wonka or Wizard of Oz gives the films a nature that cannot be recreated today. Frick cgi. Also og twilight zone is better than any sci fi movie released since like fricking Alien.

          >muh cgi
I'm hearing this BS a lot, but when the OG looks like a step above that Glasgow scam, it's hard to defend that cheap set.

The factory is supposed to be huge, the Burton movie even used miniatures. Most of the sets are real and not CG.
The garden had edible shit unlike those plastic cup tulips from the OG, and the chocolate doesn't look like Indian water, unlike the OG.

Everything about the sets of the OG is cheap.

All of The Wizard of Oz's locations look like shabby sound stage (because they are). There's nothing natural about it. None of the outdoors scenes are actually outside, they're all done in some Californian building.

Charlie used real sets and were very conservative with CGI use. The tunnel and certain scenes like violet turning into a blueberry were CGI. They trained squirrels for the veruca scenes and splices captures footage with a bit of CGI. All the Oompa Loompas were played by a single guy multiple times over

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is like if Myers' The cat in a Hat was a cult classic and replaced the original Dr Seuss books culturally because kids grew up with it during TV reruns.

It shits all over the source material and isn't even that good.

The original was turned into a glorified candy commercial. Dahl basically had no control over the film and ended up disowning it. It flopped in theaters but gained a following through tv re-runs. Burton hated the of film and got a bunch of people who hated it too and made their own faithful film with hookers and blackjack and the backing of the Dahl estate.
The Wonka candy line was the bottom of the barrel gimmicky candies to kids. The brand died out a decade ago due to lack of interest and the few successful candies like Nerds got rebranded

          Official Ganker ranking of OG and Burton Wonka movies;
OG factory vibe > Burton factory vibe
          OG Wonka > Burton Wonka
          OG Charlie > Burton Charlie
          Burton kids > OG kids
          Burton parents > OG parents
          Burton grandparents > OG grandparents
          Burton songs > OG songs
Burton Oompa Loompas > OG oompa Loompas
Said that, the new Wonka movie did the best oompa loompa and is overall a better movie than the two predecessors. But the songs are the weakest point of the movie.

          [...]
          >also the "different genre for each song" thing didn't land.
It did, it has the best songs from all the three movies. You know what doesn't land? Have the Oompa loompas sing the same shitty song 4 times in a movie.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is like if Myers' The Cat in a Hat was a cult classic and replaced the original Dr Seuss books culturally because kids grew up with it during TV reruns.
