Try a game that uses teleport instead of locomotion. Frick the devs that don't include teleport options.

      >Frick the devs that don't include teleport options.
RE4 has a teleport option but I chose full motion and also changed the camera movement to be smooth instead of snapping. probably not helping the motion sickness but I felt like the gameplay would be better that way.

        Anonymous

Yeah, that's about as hard as you can make it for yourself.
One thing that helps a lot is you could try just turning your body in real life instead of using the stick, it's more immersive too if you don't have to play seated.
You'll have to deal with teleport till you get more used to VR though, the good thing is that it probably shouldn't take too long.

Seated is always an option, but standing tends to feel more immersive.
I still play a lot of things seated just because it's easier if you're feeling lazy or want to relax.

I don't know if it's still a pack in title for the Quest but Vader Immortal's teleportation was a good stepping stone. Teleportation in RE4 sounds like it would ruin the experience.

I've been using vr for years (not literal years of playtime) and I still can't do smooth camera. However I think everyone can get used to locomotion, it just takes a little time. Also frick that other guy for suggesting vr games NEED teleporting, that training wheels shit is holding back vr gameplay especially when the tech has been around for a while now.

        >and also changed the camera movement to be smooth instead of snapping.
This is your problem. You have good genes if you made it an hour with smooth turning your first time with VR. Turning has always felt weird to me since it just feels completely unnatural compared to actually turning your head. I think it is something about how it is too smooth, clear, and doesn't let you lead with your eyes. However, I've also never really attempted to get over it since physical turning makes games feel a lot better and I generally don't bother with any in game turning.

You will probably be good to go within a few sessions if you switch back to snap turning, but you should still take it a little slow if you do ever feel off. Never go to the point of getting sick and wanting to throw up since that will train your brain to associate VR with being sick and the anticipation will make you more likely to get sick. If you start to feel bad or unreasonably hot, just take a break and go back to it later. That should be better for building tolerance and it probably won't take long before you have no limit.

        Anonymous

dumb dumb, you have everything set at the worst possible settings for a new user, you need to get your vr legs, even after having mine for a month or so using smooth turning still felt like my eyes are attached to my head via slinkeys, try it again, use joystick locomotion and snap turning if you want to go in hard

        Anonymous

There's really no benefit to smooth turning. Just turn with your body and use snap turning to spin quickly if you need to or to reorient yourself.

        Anonymous

Get used to full motion first, and then use smooth camera movement once you're used to it. Do it for an hour or so at a time and stop when you feel sick. You can't "push through" motion sickness, but you absolutely can condition your brain to associate VR with nausea, and that's really hard to undo. Take it easy at first.

There was some app that helps you do it.
It's been a while since I've used it since mods break every single tiny update they do, but it's fun to play custom songs.

PCVR is obviously better and once you get a taste for it you wouldn't be able to go to native resolutions and framerate. So it might be a good idea to take it easy and stick to native shit for now.
Use rookie sideloader to pirate, you can put custom songs in native Beat Saber, although personally I find it to be a hassle and would rather deal with the PC version.
Also, get quest game optimizer (there's a cracked version if you don't wish to pay for it), it improves some of the older releases (like RE4) immensely.

I found I went from your perspective towards wanting to use standalone more and more often.
Almost nothing on PCVR was wowing me with graphics (other than the obvious) and I prefer the simplicity and slightly lower lag of standalone when I can play a game that way, I still play a mix of both but when I can I'll tend to favor standalone.
I was one of those people who thought they'd only use the thing as a PCVR headset too.

allows to increase resolution/framerate and tweak some things to get better performance (not that relevant anymore since if your Quest firmware is up to date it should always run at its limit)

                >not that relevant anymore since if your Quest firmware is up to date it should always run at its limit
It's useful if you have a Quest 3 since a lot of older titles like Iron Man VR aren't gonna get Q3 updates

Games where you move around spinning the analog are the motion sickness gut punches.

Some games allow you to move around by walking around your room or teleporting and that's 100% comfortable (Budget Cuts, Until You Fall, Half Life Alyx). Some games allow you to move around with motion controls and that's usually better to varying degrees (Stride, Lone Echo, To the Top)

Depends on the game. Personally I believe analog movement in VR kinda just sucks but many people disagree with me here.

I just dont uderstand why there are no good MR games yet. It's super easy to create your own MR game in Unreal Engine 5/4. All you gotta do is create an oculus dev account and organization, download unreal engine (alternatively build from source, oculus branch), install android studio and setup correct NDK in UE project settings, download the MetaXR plugin, watch 5 GDXR youtube videos that explain how to add passthrough and use roomscandata (super easy), and that's it. you can also use his VR template with comes with many functions already, basically all you'd ever need for an FPS. I guess it's just the Meta store wienerblocking everyone with all the regulations and best practices that need to be met in order to get the game approved

      >I just dont uderstand why there are no good MR games yet
do you know how long it takes to make a game?
the Quest 3 has only been out for like 2 months, all the current MR games had a one year headstart being semi developed with the quest pro, and thats only if the dev was willing to spend over a thousand dollars for one

      >It's super easy to create your own MR game in Unreal Engine 5/4

I have a PC with i7 9700k and RTX 2070 Super, is it good enough for VR?
What would be the best looking game I can play?

      Anonymous

I have a 2070 Super and am i7 from a few years ago and do just fine, granted I want an upgrade but it's certainly good enough to use VR.
      >what is the best looking game
Alyx, or perhaps a modded flat game if you crank visuals (you can't)

      Anonymous

These are my exact specs and it's fine. Sometimes I get some fps drops in Blade and Sorcery but that's mainly because I have a gorillion mods installed.

Takes a bit to get used to it.
I played all of Alyx with teleportation, and now i can play locomotion fine, unless it's some moronic platforming like Blade and Sorcery's tutorial with climbing and jumping and shit.

Set the move direction to head based and turn on the fov vignette and you'll be fine.

RE4 VR is one of the more motion sickness inducing VR games I played. Half Life Alyx is unironically more comfortable. This is the problem with VR ports vs games made for VR.

Try blowing a fan on your legs at an angle. If you're standing, do it barefoot with bath mat on the floor that you can feel.

These are tricks that tell your brain you're not actually moving.

Just got done playing HL2 episode 1. God, I need to get sleep. Game is super hard to stop playing. It was made for VR!

      This
You're getting motion sickness because your brain thinks it's moving when it isn't. You could also use a fan in your face to simulate the air pressure in your ear when you move. Regardless, you'll get used to it.

          Anonymous

That's what I meant, surprised it's not much. What else do you do in VRC?
So far the main thing I've enjoyed is watching anime or movies with friends, occasionally looking at vket or checking out worlds.

            Anonymous

Used to be part of a big group that would often host events. Gaming nights, world hopping, movie nights or just hanging out. A lot of it was spent watching anime and movies with friends, shame that's not doable anymore.
Huge fan of Vket and similar events. I go to them all so that's at least a hundred hours more.
Personally I always liked checking out random worlds and exploring too.

It's funny to think people already missed out on the golden age of VRChat. All the contrarianism only led to people missing out on the best thing that happened online since the early 2000s.

Movie worlds being kill, devs reserving the right to monitor your ERP sessions. The sanitisation for corpos is beginning. I wouldn't be surprised if toxmod was introduced in a year or two.

                What's the best vr headset?
What's the cheapest that's not complete shit?

I would have recommended the HP Reverb G2 V2 (on sale for $200-$300) as the best bang for the buck you could get, but Microsoft is deprecating WMR so it's likely gonna be bricked in a year or two, if there aren't any workarounds.
Really pisses me off because the G2 has good visuals and the same audio as the Valve Index, which is best in class and I don't want to downgrade to a Quest 3 or pay out the ass for an Index or Deckard.

motion sickess is your body noticing a discrepancy from your vision and your inner ear. Thinks your are poisoned and reaction is to vomit. it's a defense mechanism, opposite of inferior genes.
People that don't get motion sickess would be MUCH more likely to die in a natural setting.

    Don't be discouraged anon!
    1. Not all games have motion, most BIG vr games offer teleport moving, which helps drastically with motion sickness. I think RE4 does too.
    2. If you cannot handle games, you can still use it as an AMAZING video player. Once you play videos in VR, watching them in a normal monitor just feels inferior.

vr sickness is not motion sickness, you're not moving, only in your mind like lammy, its the reverse of motion sickness thats why its specifically called VR sickness.
and everyone gets it, trust me flight sims including spinning at 5000rpm in a space ship do nothing to me but vr does (takes longer than most but still does, mostly due to the shitty resolution of exactly OP pic rel, if I wasn't fricking squinting at everything so the frensel lense worked right (friends headset btw i'd never buy this shit) i'd be fine)

      im not OP for clarity

the snap turning on the camera and some games not having smooth turn is cancer to me, and if the headset wasnt so physically heavy you could just turn irl.
the room itself can interfere with this too unless you're playing in a giant hanger. cant tell you how many times both of us hit the ceiling light while climbing in game, or the couch blocks you from proning, or fricking launch the pad at the tv because grenades and no one uses the dumb strap when you pass the headset and controls between multiple people.

I gave my q2 to my wife so we can play coop together to it's been worth it, but no real killer app yet.

I want to get a hand to hand fighting game, but there are so many and I have heard good/bad about all of them:

    >blade & sorcery
Liked the original but it seems jank and the ai sucks
    >swordsman
HEMAgays online all tell me this is great, but it looks primitive and also jank, canned animations
    >dark sword
Might be good but more of a dark souls attempt and I really just want an arena fighter
    >battle talent
Apparently was really good but a recent update removed a bunch of environments you could readily spawn into, in order to make them levels in a narrative mode?

    I'm probably ignorant here, so any help would be appreciated;
Are any of them actually good?

      Anonymous

What exactly do you want from a hand to hand fighting game? Also what do you mean about the 'original' in the case of B&S? Nomad is just a Quest port - it hasn't deprecated the original on PC.

If you want to hit things with swords B&S remains the gold standard really. If you want to box Thrill of the Fight is the way to go. If you want to PvP play that Earthbender game instead as it's remarkably deep and the closest you get to a fighting game in VR. Not sure if you want to brawl, perhaps there are some good boneworks mods. Nothing has good AI though.

        Anonymous

Really appreciate the effort post brother, thank you!

I'm mostly looking for a swordfighting kind of experience, I have thrill of the fight and its great, but would like something with satisfying physics and weapons.
I will maybe get B&S after all, (by original, i meant I enjoyed it on vive years ago, but i understand in the lead up to nomad they gimped the physics a little and dont know if it recovered from that)

          Anonymous

Oh I see what you mean for B&S. Yes, they did change the physics somewhat and try to optimise. At the time of the update it made quite a few things weird but it didn't seem like it was a lot worse. Probably worth returning to, I haven't played it in a while. Unfortunately, I don't know of anything better than it currently.

Boneworks and/or bonelabs also have good physics, but they don't have any meaningful combat/enemies so aren't particularly satisfying.

Do "people" actually use these headsets without PCVR?

Yes, quite a lot of people honestly, and standalone game are improving. I've brought my Q2 with me a fair bit when travelling and it runs reasonably well - although it's a significant downgrade compared to PCVR.

I don't have a Quest 3 but suspect the extra rendering power will be enough to get many games up to consistently 90/120Hz, and will gradually drag up fidelity in general. There are good full titles on standalone now. Not only Asgard's Wrath 2, but also things like Into the Radius or Red Matter, Walking Dead S&S etc.

So they're not bad standalone, but PCVR is the best experience.

E:D is a weird one since the in-ship stuff is excellent for VR. But if you enjoy the on-foot mission/combat it'll flip to a floating 2D screen any time you aren't in your ship. And since they didn't optimize the on-foot UI for VR you really need a high-res headset like a Reverb G2 or a Quest 3 to have a passable experience.
However, you don't have to do the on-foot shit and can simply ignore it if you want to.

You can get over it, just power through it. I was dizzy for a about week before it suddenly went away. Keep playing until you feel like puking and play a little bit more each session. There are things you can do to help like pointing a fan so the breeze can tell you where you're looking or take that nausea medication people take before flying.

  55. 6 months ago

It takes some getting used to. Make sure that you have measured your PID (there is an app for it) and that you adjust the Quest's PID setting appropriately. The Quest 2's PID adjustment is kind of jank, but you need to get it as close as possible to avoid eye strain.

For motion sickness, as others have said: Try turning with your body primarily, not the right-stick. There are usually settings to add kind of a black fog around the borders of your vision while turning with the stick, which can help with motion sickness. To some extent you just have to get used to it, kind of like being on a boat on the ocean.

VR legs time. Take ginger. Get used to it. Seek out some mild experiences first. wienerpit sims with violent motion will probably be the worst. You'll be good in a few weeks.

As someone who bruteforced the "vr legs" meme for 2 months straight, not really. Yeah I don't get dizzy or break into cold sweat in VR anymore but I still don't feel comfortable, there's a sense of unease and discomfort that never goes away. If your game is great I'll push through that sense of discomfort and probably enjoy the game but it's enough to stop me from playing your generic blade and sorcery clones which is about the only things we get these days.

Any decent VR mecha games? I tried Strike Suit Zero, but apparently the VR mode was discontinued for lack of support.

Vox Machinae has good mechanics and plays well but the campaign is a bit meh. Not that there's a lot of good campaigns in VR so

The joy of VM is multiplayer but I assume it's dead? Before /vrg/ was a troony social club they used to do some VM rounds every Monday, which were a good time.

Vox has quest crossplay so I assume there's at least a small public playerbase on weekends.
Even before crossplay it was one of those games where you see no populated lobbies but it gradually fills up with real people if you start one.

    >brain recognizing inconsistencies in your senses is... bad!

I never get motionsickness. I don't even fear heights. But when I tried on a Quest plugged into my PC to play the Forest, the smooth walking gave me dizziness. Even I was amazed that I would succumb to it

It takes literally a week to get used to it... I used to not be able to move and now I just beat Asgard's Wrath 2 playing 5+ hours at a time and never got sick once. If you're turning with an analog stick turn the sensitivity up high, though. When you turn slow it makes you feel worse since turning takes longer. Teleporting is moronic, don't use it. When you start feeling sick don't keep playing just take a break until its over.

Different for everyone, some people never had it in the first place, for some it never goes away. And I don't know why you're assuming that the changes in your brain are now permanent. That's a pretty profound effect from a few hours of playing a video game. For me if I don't play VR for a while, the sense of unease comes back a bit.

I can't even ride in the backseat of a car, if someone is prone to motion sickness more than me I'm not sure why they bought vr in the first place

Just gotta keep at it, you're conditioning your brain a new perspective. I got over it pretty quick funny enough the first time I played in VR for maybe a 2 hour session I didn't feel any motion sickness but the 2nd day I did in like 20 minutes, then the third day I could handle an hour.

I'll never understand the motion sickness thing. Never had it, even the first time I used a VR set. The only "weird" feeling I get is after I play for a bit, I expect to not feel the things I touch for a few minutes.

It's mostly when the camera moves out of accordance with body, so full scale doesn't trigger it, but moving by joystick input does, people feel like they are gonna fall over and they get motion sick.

I got it bad to begin with but now I can play hours without a hint, just needs training, same as driving and sailing.

Do "people" actually use these headsets without PCVR?

    FUK ART, PAY PROMPTERS

Only the first week. Inferior genes gets sick longer than that. I imagine it's a bugger problem for quest 2 than quest 3

What are some good PCVR shootin games?

haha I can play FPS games for 14 hours straight, no problem. But Gameboy in the backseat of a car as a kid? sick within 5 minutes. VR does the same unless it's high frame rate like PSVR.

Maybe there is an option to move the camera further back? In some VR games, the issue is that the camera is too far forward.
